This book follows Lisbeth Salander, a Swedish hacker who, while looking into her father and sister’s criminal empire, uncovers information about ties between a criminal organization, the National Security Agency (NSA), and a massive technology corporation.

Prominent scientist, Franz Balder, recently learned his autistic son, August, is being abused by his stepfather, Lasse Westman. Balder travels from the United States to Sweden in order to retrieve the boy from his mother, actress Hanna Balder. The boy has been neglected and not received the proper care because Westman and Hanna used Balder’s child support money on other things.

This book summarizes what the original book is about, lists and analyzes the book's characters and relationships, and analyzes the book's themes. I found the discussion on artificial intelligence to be particularly interesting. Will there someday be a world where machines are more intelligent than humans? Even though this is a summary, I was entertained the entire time I read the book. The story line is engaging, and I felt like it could easily be turned into a movie or television show.

By Eric Rojo This review/summary of David Lagercrantz's "The Girl in the Spider's Web" does an excellent job of detailing the main characters and plots of the story. I don't read for pleasure much, but this summary has kept me engaged enough that I want to read the full book. That's how good Instaread summaries are.

This book chronicles three years at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa College in Boulder, Colorado. In 1974 Trungpa Rinpoche founded the Naropa Institute as the first Buddhist contemplative university in the West. He asked Allen Ginsberg to be the head of the English Department and Allen enlisted Anne Waldman and they co-founded the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics to be the English Department at Naropa. Each summer Naropa would hold special writers workshops and Allen would come for a month and William Burroughs would attend for at least a week. Allen would invite other writers and poets and over the years nearly everyone associated with the Beat generation was in attendance. The journals include appearances by William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Herbert Huncke, Harry Smith, Ken Kesey, Anne Waldman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Philip Whalen, Gary Snyder, Peter Orlovsky, Trungpa Rinpoche, Timothy Leary, Carolyn Cassady, Diane Di Prima, Michael McClure, John Giorno, Antler, and Andy Clausen. The book includes brief biographies and literary criticism of the lives and works of Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Herbert Huncke and Harry Smith.

About the Author

Fabrizio Boco

Fabrizio Boco was born in Italy in 1964. He started with electronics when he was a teen and with programming in 1980. In 1992, he received his degree in electronics engineering. Currently, he is a freelance IT manager and architect and has more than 20 years of experience in consulting for private and public companies in Italy. Even when he occupied executive positions, he worked on the design and implementation of IT projects (mostly on enterprise applications, data warehousing, and business intelligence). He has been an iOS developer since 2009, and he has designed and developed Arduino Manager, which is an iOS, Mac OS X, and Android application that can be used to control Arduino (and Arduino-compatible) boards through a powerful and easy-to-use interface, that is based on more than 20 specialized widgets (a switch, knob, display, and gauge, among others). Fabrizio believes that his engineering skills are hardcoded within his DNA; the studies and experiences only completed them.

I've just started to notice the Arduino and with the iOS integration, I figured it would be a good idea to grab a book to help me get some projects under my belt. It amazes me, how all of the technology has grown so fast and has become even smaller, yet we still have moderately sized computers. I feel like these systems draw way less power and cost per year is insanely low. The projects are fairly inexpensive and can be done with a family member or fellow geeky friend, nothing say's I love you like a rocket launcher with a big red button on the iPhone that say's LAUNCH! For this very reason I give the book a 5/5 for fully functional projects, offering more than 2, and for keeping everything neatly structured.I utilize the Packt Lib subscription service so I can get multiple books at a lower cost, but some of these books need to have reviews on Amazon so people can be aware of the quality, only reason I take the time to post it here.

By Requin Do you already have some experience to Arduino or iOS App programming and problems to integrate both systems? Then this should be a good fit for you. Realizing really cool Applications developing good looking user interfaces will make the people around you wonder, how you did this that quick.I already had quite some experience for Arduino only projects. But this book opened new doors to me. The first time I created IOS Apps. In Beginning it took some time getting into it, but it was most definitely worth the efforts.Believe me the last project using iBeacon is a fantastic one.

Wilde’s French Tragic Play

“Neither at things, nor at people should one look. Only in mirrors should one look, for mirrors do but show us masks.” - Oscar Wilde, Salome

Written in French, Salome by Oscar Wilde is the theatrical reproduction of the famous Biblical story with the same name. Salome is the daughter of Herod and requests his father to meet Jokanaan (John the Baptist) who is his prisoner. The father grants her daughter’s wish and Salome falls in love with John. The holy man rejects Salome but she isn’t quite ready to give up yet.

Wilde's erotic play with Beardsley's decadent illustrations By Lawrance Bernabo The Salome legend has its beginnings in the Gospels of Matthew (14:3-11) and Mark (6:17-28), which tells of the beheading of John the Baptist at the instigation of Herodias, wife of Herod. The queen was angered by John's denunciation of her marriage as incestuous (she had been married to Herod's brother). In both accounts, Herodias uses her daughter (unnamed in scripture but known to tradition, through Josephus, as Salome) as the instrument of the prophet's destruction by having her dance for Herod. The story of Salome was prominent in both literature and the visual arts until the end of the Renaissance, and was revived in the nineteenth century by Heinrich Herne, and explored by such divergent authors as Gustave Flaubert, Stephane Mallarme, Joris-Karil Huysmans, and Oscar Wilde.Wilde wrote "Salome" in French in 1893 for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. The play was performed once in Paris in 1904, and today is much better known as the libretto for Richard Strauss' operetta. In large part Wilde ignores the idea that Heroidas is the prime mover behind John death, focusing instead on the eroticism of Salome's passions for the Baptist. In this version of the story, John rejects the princess who then dances the infamous Dance of the Seven Veils for Herod to achieve her revenge. Of course, fans of Wilde, or at least those who know the highlights of his life's story, will recognize the name of Lord Alfred Douglass, the translator of the play into English. However, whatever the merits of the play, the chief attraction of this volume remains the illustrations.Aubrey Beardsley was an important artist in the Esoteric Art movement of the "fin du siecle" (end of the 19th-century). A close friend of Oscar Wilde, he did both the illustrations and stage designs for Wilde's play "Salome." Obviously Beardsley represents the "Art Nouveau" school, but he also showed an affinity with the Symbolists and Pre-Raphaelite schools as well, all of which explored the rich symbolism of Judeo-Christian and pre-Judeo-Christian Pagan mythos. In this context the story of Salome is ideal. However, Beardsley remains the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images and the grotesque erotic themes which he explored in his later work. Beardsley was not interested in creation any illusion of reality, but like the Eastern artists he studied, was concerned with making a beautiful design within a given space. His work on "Salome" is considered some of his finest examples of decadent erotica. This volume has 20 such illustrations, including those originally suppressed when the book was first published in 1905.

Deaver This play takes a psychotic murderer from the bible who used her beauty and sex appeal to get her way...and turns her into a wholly sympathetic character. The star of this play is charged with life and vitality and a kind of beautiful, moving viciousness, and Oscar Wilde reminds us that Salome was not the [person] portrayed in the Bible and most Christian literature. She was an old-fashioned fairytale princess, albeit one capable of murder, and she had never truly loved a man before Iokanaan. As for Iokanaan (the exotic Hebrew name given to John the Baptist), he is arrogant, vicious, and cold, and his emotional brutality toward Salome makes him literally impossible to like--an interesting portrayal of this so-called "Holy Man" and a reminder that John the Baptist was not a Christian, but an old-fashioned, "law of Moses", stone-casting Hebrew of the time.Still, above and beyond the characters is the trademark beauty of Wilde's word-play, which in my opinion has never quite equaled this anywhere else. From the ironic wit of Herodias ("There are others who look too much at her"), to the sappy, empty-headed, yet still beautiful pomposity of Herod, to the pitiable misery of Narraboth, a young Syrian guard who loves Salome, to the religious rants and prophecies of Iokanaan (mostly re-written Bible verses), every word of the play is a treasure. However, none of these things can equal Salome's adoring eloquence when describing Iokanaan's beauty. Every word of that speech is a treasure. The fact that she loves him is, in fact, the only thing that makes Iokanaan likeable to any degree. This play proves that Oscar Wilde can actually write serious literature as well as or better than he can write witty banter.Of all the stage plays I have ever had the privilege of experiencing, this one is by far the most dear to me. You haven't lived until you have at least read it. Get this manuscript; it is the most precious you will ever buy.

Snipes This affordably-priced edition of Salome contains all the Aubrey Beardsley drawings and is the English translation undertaken by Lord Alfred Douglas of Wilde's most brilliant tale of passion, which was originally written in French to avoid (unsuccessfully) Victorian censorship. Salome is a simple tale of complex passion. Wilde's heroine bears no resemblance to her biblical origin. His Salome is no mere instrument of Herodias, but a dangerous and passionate young woman whose thwarted affections for John the Baptist lead to a disasterous climax for all persons involved. Wilde's script is a brilliant look at deep-rooted desires and the dangers of obsession. This edition of the play is a must for anyone building their own theatrical library.

The engines are started, twenty shiny propellers glistening in the sun, forty exhausts rumbling and belching blue smoke. . . . Everything ready, the pilot waves his hand, the blocks are pulled and the flights taxi out one at a time. Away goes the commander, motor roaring, streamers flying, and the rest follow in their proper formation order. A couple of turns around the aerodrome and they're away to the line-up, up, and they soon disappear in the haze. Just beyond that beckoning "haze," Captain Bogart Rogers and his fellow pilots flew into enemy territory to fight the world's first air war. Suffused with the romance of flight and the harsh realities of aerial combat, Rogers's letters to his fiancee, Isabelle Young, vividly detail his wartime experiences against a lethal and elusive opponent exemplified by the likes of Baron von Richthofen's Flying Circus. The son of controversial Los Angeles attorney Earl Rogers ("the greatest jury lawyer of his time," claimed Clarence Darrow) and brother to pioneering Hearst journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns, Bogart made his mark in the Great War. Of the three hundred-plus Americans who joined the British air corps in 1917, only Rogers and two dozen other volunteers became "aces" by shooting down five or more German planes. He himself claimed six "kills" in fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, the Somme Offensive, Cambrai, Ypres-Lys, and six other major engagements. Rogers also had a definite flair for writing, one that launched his postwar career as a journalist and screenwriter in Hollywood. The letters in this volume are a striking testament to that skill. Lucid, reflective, highly articulate, and touched with flashes of humor, they illuminate the challenges of aviation training, daily life at the aerodromes, the liberating wonders of flight, and the sobering truths of a devastating war. They also reflect Rogers's constant longing for his future bride "Izzy" (who celebrates her 99th birthday in 1996).

A Yankee Ace in the RAF: The World War I Letters of Captain Bogart Rogers (Modern War Studies)From University Press of Kansas

Review "Incontestably, Bogart Rogers had a way with words; his lively style is ideal for relating the adventures of a young man caught up in the world's first air war. Where many other airmen struggled to convey the wonders of early flight, Rogers provides a deft and vivid portrait of life in the cockpit."—Lee Kennett, author of The First Air War, 1914–1918"Rogers was a sensitive and sensible observer who wrote well even at this early stage of his literary career. His letters chronicle his maturation in the terrible crucible of the air war."—David F. Trask, author of The AEF and Coalition Warmaking, 1917–1918

From the Author In the summer of 1917 Bogart Rogers, a 20 year old sophomore at Stanford University and son of a prominent Los Angeles attorney joined the Royal Flying Corps, and trained in Canada, Texas, and England. Assigned to RAF No.32 Squadron, he arrived in France at the end of April, 1918. From the middle of May to the Armistice on November 11 Rogers fought in ten major battles on the Western Front and ended the war a Flight Leader and decorated Captain with six enemy planes to his credit. From the time he left for Canada in August 1917 until he returned home in May 1919 he wrote 244 letters to a Stanford girl, Isabelle Young, whom he married in 1920. The letters represent not only a chronicle of World War I, but also an 18 month courtship by mail. They are written with clarity and humor and the skill of a writer who, after the war, wrote for the Los Angeles Examiner, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post, Popular Aviation and many other magazines . He was also a screen writer and movie producer for Paramount Pictures.

Although the book is published as Military History and covers the life of a young fighter pilot through training and aerial combat in "the terrible crucible of the air war" it also contains an element of romance and has appealed to at least a few women. One reader, Barbara Ivey wrote, "I so enjoyed becoming a part of the lives of these two sweethearts".

The original letters have been edited and the content reduced by a third, leaving out much of the trivia found in collections of letters such as comments on the weather and personal banter etc.. The book contains some, but not many footnotes. Each chapter is prefaced with a paragraph or two putting the events of the chapter in historical context.

From the Back Cover Suffused with the romance of flight and the harsh realities of aerial combat, Rogers's letters to his fiancee, Isabelle Young, vividly detail his wartime experiences against a lethal and elusive opponent exemplified by the likes of Baron von Richthofen's Flying Circus. The son of controversial Los Angeles attorney Earl Rogers ("the greatest jury lawyer of his time", claimed Clarence Darrow) and brother to pioneering Hearst journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns, Bogart made his mark in the Great War. Of the 300-plus Americans who joined the British air corps in 1917, only Rogers and two dozen other volunteers became aces by shooting down five or more German planes. He himself claimed six "kills" in fighting during the Second Battle of the Marne, the Somme Offensive, dogfights over Cambrai, dashes at Ypres and Lys, and six other major engagements. Rogers also had a definite flair for writing, one that launched his postwar career as a journalist and screenwriter in Hollywood. The letters in this volume are a striking testament to that skill. Lucid, reflective, highly articulate, and touched with flashes of humor, they illuminate the challenges of aviation training, daily life at the aerodrome, the liberating wonders of flight, and the sobering truths of a devastating war. They also reflect Rogers's constant longing for his future bride "Izzy" (who celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday in 1996).

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An intimate look at the Air War By Jesse Negron Bogart Rogers gives us a uniquely personal perspective of the first air war. Unlike many other war diary books, this book is a collection of letters that Rogers wrote to his soon-to-be wife. The letters, in and of themselves, are very interesting. Obviously, Rogers had no idea they would be published one day, so they have a strikingly intimate and honest tone when compared to other war diaries of the time. Because the story unfolds organically, via this series of letters, there is a lot of reading between the lines. Especially when it comes to what he chooses not to tell his fiance'. His description of one of his close friends not returning after a sortie is written so succinctly and "business-like" that his pain and loss somehow seem more intense and palpable. In some ways, this book is a love story. Although every letter goes into detail about his air combat experiences, his greatest conflict is that he wants to be reunited with the love of his life. Above all, Rogers comes across as a real human being who could have lived now as well as then. The power of his letters comes from the fact that he describes the dangerous training, the chaotic dogfighting, the horrors of war to a woman who has little knowledge of what he is going through. This brings a freshness and vitality to his account of fighting in the air during the Great War.

Unlocking Worlds: A Reading Companion for Book LoversBy Sally Allen

Review "There are many books available that exist to give impressions of other books [...]. The question with such books is, do they validate the time spent reading them, or would one be better served to simply read one of the other books on his or her to-read list? As a distillation of many years of reading, Unlocking Worlds provides valuable knowledge to anyone looking beyond the next Amazon recommendation for ideas. More importantly, even if one never follows up with any of Allen's recommendations, reading Unlocking Worlds is an enjoyable experience all by itself." - Foreword Clarion Reviews"This lovely little book is inspiring me to reclaim the obsessive, escapist, reading/dreaming part of my personality." - Johnna Kaplan, The Size of Connecticut

By Dhivya Balaji / Readers Muse FIRST IMPRESSION:When I got the paperback in my hands, from the first sight, I was impressed by this book. The cover was clean, colorful and the title very apt. 'Unlocking Worlds' (and the author has given a beautiful explanation for it in her interview for us) is a book that will unlock many worlds for every reader. The printing and illustrations are excellent, even for the ARC I was provided with. The overall chapter placement was brilliant too.REVIEW:'Unlocking Worlds' is a book I would have to keep at the top of my bookshelf, always visible, always just in my reach. It is , in simple words, a reading companion. But I do not think it is limited to Book Lovers alone. It has the potential to make even those who don't prefer books take up and read them. The author, Sally Allen, has been a bookworm since her childhood (and she does tell us about this in a very well worded introduction) and uses her long years of experience with books to compile a very organised and neat book about books.Books are, in my opinion, portals to exciting worlds of adventure and information. Any book lover will not feel bored or alone in any circumstance if they have a book in hand to read. Sally Allen has so generously given us a few worthy lists of books she has enjoyed over the years, and with them she has done every book lover a favor. All those who love books and are mostly found in the very unexpected of places with a book in hand, will relate to, and appreciate the words the author has shared with us.A peek into a book lover's shelf would always be exciting, and the simple joy in finding about more books that maybe made an impression on someone else who appreciates it is a pleasure. Which is why this book is a treasure trove. It is a distilled version of the bookshelf of a bookworm, where she has carefully handpicked the books that she loved and those that made an impact on her. You may find books that you already know about, books that you never even knew existed, and those under appreciated books that you might have loved and not found anyone to discuss it with. The contents are organised, with clear genre specifications (a feat unto itself, because it has never been easy to classify books under particular genres) and has a simple but alluring synopsis about what to expect from each book, not the one that is given in the respective covers, but one that comes from the author's personal experiences with the book. The language, not surprisingly, is great and the style in which the overall contents are presented is also clear and detailed. The book taught me, in addition to other things, how exactly a review should be. It must give enough information to entice the reader, while not revealing any spoilers, and still manage to bring out the best and worst of the books.Unlocking Worlds is a great reading companion - an index for good books and a book that would be consulted often to know about more amazing books.WHAT I LIKED:The title, cover page and the conceptThe illustrations, both on the cover page and inside the book. They add variety to the content, and make it much more interestingThe organisation of the book, in different genres. It looks clean and can be referred to at convenience and not necessarily in a linear orderWHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:There is not a thing I would change about this book - except maybe add more of it!VERDICT:A must have for every book lover. And even if you are not, this would very well make you one! A must have either way.RATING: 5/5

I was delighted that one of my favorite series, All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor, was included as one of the selections.I especially loved what the author said about revisiting childhood books: "Returning to these childhood worlds as adults can remind us of the lessons we learned and parts of ourselves we may have long forgotten." Yes! As a great fan of rereading classic children's books, I was especially delighted to read this chapter, in praise of children's literature for adults.Unlocking Worlds: A Reading Companion for Book Lovers is beautifully written by an author who clearly really loves books. This is a celebration of the joys of reading. It is sure to delight readers, and I think it would also be a fine, helpful reference for any book discussion group leader.

By #redhead.with.book What a wonderful reading companion! This  book should be on every reader's library with an update every few years (I hope I'm not getting Sally all stressed out about this... :D )  The one thing I didn't like was the cover.  The contents of this book deserve a much more formal, attractive cover.  I read the ebook in PDF and found myself wanting write on the pages because there were so many wonderful quotes and books to read.  I found myself flying back and forth onto the Goodreads website to select new books "to read" and as a result, I will need a new library shelf just for the works I learned about from this guide. There are two ways to approach this book; technical or emotional.  I choose the emotional approach because of the huge impact it had on my reading.Sally, an obvious lover of books describes her own addiction.  Here is a quote about her: "When deep into a great book a need possesses me to carry it with me wherever I go, never to let it stray too far from my thoughts or person.  Also, I was at a particularly compelling point in the narrative.  What if an asteroid hit the parking lot just exactly where I had parked my car?  It's best not to take any chances."  (my feeling exactly)Sally nicely explains why reading is so important to her. "One of my preoccupations is improving my ability to communicate, and to do so requires understanding language's infinite potential.  I appreciate authors who show me that potential".One of my favorite quotes from the book is a quote from Pnin  by Vladimir Nabokov on page 126: "With the help of the janitor he screwed onto the side of the desk a pencil sharpener - that highly satisfying, highly philosophical implement that goes Ticonderoga-ticon-deroga, feeding on the yellow finish and sweet wood, and ends up in a kind of soundlessly spinning ethereal void as we all must".  (....swooning)I had already read several of the books Sally chose to include in her guide and was curious to read her take on them and one of them had me looking for a dictionary because I never thought to look up the meaning of a certain word in one of their titles (look up Penumbra). She ends her book by explaining that, it really is impossible to read every book that comes out and that it is ok just to take a breather and not read when you're really not in the mood to.  That enticing book on your pile will get read in time. I would love to have a print copy of Unlocking Worlds just so that I can go back and scribble and underline it and enjoy it all over again.

By Anee This review wanted me to run out and buy the book.Right from the beginning this summary grabbed my attention. I am a Canadian and grew up with men who hunted, and being set in B.C. the scene was very clear.I loved how the main and secondary characters were listed for me, it was like a play. Then chapter by chapter the plot builds for me but does not give it all away. I really like having a summary and analysis, it really let's me know if I want to spend my time reading the book. Can't wait for the next book to come out.

When I went back to it, it became a page turner. I could not wait to get back to it. The characters are very believable. The BC setting (I live in WA) was perfect. The descriptions of places and event were very real. I will be reading more of Loreth's books, if my heart can stand it.

By cmg I enjoyed this book but found that the author was very much in love with the Admiral, to the (slight) detriment of the book. A lot of time was spent trying to prove that Admiral Collingwood was the brains behind Admiral Nelson. That said, it is a great read for the fan of the time period. Not sure how the die-hard historian would find it (I consider myself to be a slightly more than casual student of this time period).
