Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, and is of a type known as the "beheading game". The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is an important poem in the romance genre, which typically involves a hero who goes on a quest which tests his prowess, and it remains popular to this day in modern English renderings from J. R. R. Tolkien, Simon Armitage and others, as well as through film and stage adaptations. It describes how Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who challenges any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts and beheads him with his blow, at which the Green Knight stands up, picks up his head and reminds Gawain of the appointed time. In his struggles to keep his bargain Gawain demonstrates chivalry and loyalty until his honor is called into question by a test involving Lady Bertilak, the lady of the Green Knight's castle. The poem survives in a single manuscript, the Cotton Nero A.x., which also includes three religious narrative poems: Pearl, Purity and Patience. All are thought to have been written by the same unknown author, possibly Cameron of Sutherland, dubbed the "Pearl Poet" or "Gawain Poet", since all four are written in a North West Midland dialect of Middle English. Bonus works are included! An ultimate collection of “King Arthur” stories: • Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, the best-known compilation of Arthurian lore • Idylls of the King by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, a poetic retelling of the Arthurian cycle • King Arthur and His Knights by Maude Radford Warren, a version of the story for children and families • King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table by Sir James Knowles, another popular retelling for the general reader • A Connecticut in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain *Secret sixth Bonus King Arthur-an overview of the historical basis & more!

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight & Five "King Arthur" Bonus works: Le Morte d'Arthur, Idylls of the King, King Arthur and His Knights, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and A Connecticut Yankee in KingBy Sir Thomas Malory, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Maude Radford Warren, Sir James Knowles, Mark Twain

From Publishers Weekly Composed in medieval England by an unknown poet and set in what were (even then) the old days of King Arthur, the tale of Sir Gawain begins when a magical warrior with green skin and green hair interrupts the Christmas party at Camelot with a bizarre challenge: If a person here present, within these premises,/ is big or bold or red blooded enough/ to strike me one stroke and be struck in return in once year's time, says the knight, I shall give him as a gift this gigantic cleaver. Pure, loyal Sir Gawain accepts the agreement: the adventures that ensue include a boar hunt, a deer hunt, and an extended flirtation with a noble lady, designed to test Sir Gawain's bravery, fidelity and chastity, and to explore—with some supernatural help—the true meaning of virtue. The Gawain-poet, as he is known to scholars, wrote in Middle English (reproduced here); though it is slightly harder to read than Chaucer, the grammar is more or less our own. Armitage (The Shout), one of England's most popular poets, brings an attractive contemporary fluency to the Gawain-poet's accentual, alliterative verse: We hear the knights of Round Table chatting away charmingly, exchanging views. This is a compelling new version of a classic. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Review [Armitage] has taken an artifact from a remote era and made it his own, while simultanously restoring it to itself. Boar Hunts and Bedchambers By Andrew Schonbek Also alliteration and a lot of it.Simon Armitage has produced a contemporary translation of the noted 14th century Middle English poem. In so doing he has been faithful to the original work, while rendering it accessible and interesting to modern readers. The action begins when the knights of King Arthur's Round Table are disturbed in their Christmas feasting by the arrival of a fearsome Green Knight who issues a remarkable challenge:"if a person here present, within these premises,is big or bold or red-blooded enoughto strike me one stroke and be struck in return,I shall give him as a gift this gigantic cleaverand the axe shall be his to handle as he likes.I'll kneel, bare my neck, and take the first knock. So who has the gall? The gumption? The guts?Who'll spring from his seat and snatch this weapon?I offer the axe - who'll have it as his own?I'll afford him one free hit from which I won't flinch, and promise that twelve months will pass in peace, then claim, the duty I deservein one year and one day.Does no one have the nerveto wager in this way?"Gawain accepts the challenge, and lops off the Green Knight's head with a single swipe, only to have the Knight stand up, pick up his head, and remind Gawain to meet him at the appointed time. The ensuing quest, culminating in an ambivalent and unexpected ending, weaves together themes of chivalry and the natural, hunting and seduction, as well as Christianity and paganism. The symbolism is many layered and ushers the reader into ever deeper understandings from an ancient era.But it is the language, the evocative delighting in words, that I most enjoyed. Here is the description of a boar hunt that takes place while Gawain fends off the amorous advances of a beautiful mistress:"The front men stepped forward to fire a shot, aimed arrows at him that were often on target, but their points could not pierce his impenetrable shouldersand bounced away from his bristly brow. The smooth slender shafts splintered into pieces, and the heads glanced away from wherever they hit.Battered and baited by such bombardment,in frenzied fury he flies at the men, hurts them horribly as he hurtles past,so that many grow timid and retreated a tad.But the master of the manor gave chase on his mount, the boldest of the beast-hunters, his bugle blaring, trumpeting the tally-ho and tearing through the thicketstill the setting sun slipped from the western sky.So the day was spent in pursuits of this style, while our lovable young lord had not left his bed, and, cosseted in costly quilted covers, there heremained. The lady, at first light, did not neglect Gawain, but went to wake the knightand to change his mind."Recommended reading (once you start with the alliteration it's hard to stop).

Above All, Readable By New Yawkuh I guess in an enterprise like this - creating the nth translation of an ancient classic - distinction of a given effort comes from the balance of readability, poetry, and faithfulness. This translation hikes the "readability" parameter all the way up. Most book reviewers of this translation use the "can't put it down" cliche, and it's true. No need to discuss further: if you're looking for a heckuva read, even if you're familiar with this work, you need look no further. As for poetry, Armitage is a distinguished poet, and clearly invested great care in the music, nuance, and language (including, yes, tons of alliteration...in most cases working off a different consonant than the original). The result stands as a work of art, hence my five stars. One can't argue with greatness. As for faithfulness...I'm no scholar, so don't take this as more than a comment from the peanut gallery. But as I read, I'd often glance over at the Middle English text and feel dismayed to find that more liberty was taken than I'd have preferred. In many cases, the Middle English is fully intelligible and quite affecting, yet Armitage chooses quite different language. On the other hand, his method is proven by the vibrantly engaging result. My biggest quibble is that the translation contains three or four VERY jarring instances of discordantly modern colloquialisms (without discernible reason, to my eye) that come from out of nowhere. If I'd known I'd be writing this review, I'd have noted them, but never mind; as you read, you can't help but trip on them. Each time, I'd shake my head in disbelief. But, again, they're extremely infrequent. So if readability and poetic sweep are your preference - and why wouldn't they would be if you're reading for pleasure? - this is definitely a book to own. If you're a Middle English scholar or a knowledgeable veteran of multiple previous Gawain versions, you ought to approach with a forgiving attitude. Armitage takes pains, in the introduction, to claim a minimally invasive approach. But don't all translators say the same?Just an aside, perhaps naive: issues of spelling seem to constitute a great deal of the original's impenetrability. I'd love to read a truly minimally invasive translation, where spelling is modernized and only crucial obsolete words are individually replaced (alliteration be damned), in order to enjoy an easier undiluted taste of The Poet's voice. I hasten to note that even if such a translation existed, Armitage's work would still sit proudly on my shelf.

Red I've read a lot of translations of the poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" (I regularly teach it), and I thought that nobody could outdo the standard, quite wonderful version by Marie Borroff (also published by Norton). Well, I've just finished reading Simon Armitage's amazing translation, and I was wrong. Armitage's should be the new standard version used by students and lay readers everywhere. It captures both the energetic alliteration of the original and also its wonderful toggling between formal and colloquial registers. It does a magnificent job of approximating the galloping rhythm of the long verses, but is equally stunning at managing the "bob and wheel" that brings each long verse to comically neat closure (e.g., see Armitage's description of Gawain's emblem, the pentangle -- "[he] bore that badge on both / his shawl and shield alike. / A prince who talked the truth. A notable. A knight," ll.636-39). It takes some poetic chutzpah to fiddle with the Gawain-poet in this way. But Armitage has the versifying courage and the nervy tone just right. I think the 14th-century poet, whoever he was, would admire and appreciate this new version. That's also because Armitage shows humility as a translator too when it matters. For example, he works hard to preserve the delicate moral ambiguities of the original poem. It's difficult to translate Gawain's refusal to give the seductress, the lady of the manor (where his humility, his loyalty and his self-control are tested) a token of his affection with the perfect blend of courtesy and self-regard that is there in the original ("Hit is not your honour to haf at this tyme / A glove for a garysoun of Gawaynes giftes," ll. 1806-07), but Armitage's "it strikes me as unseemly that you should receive / nothing greater than a glove as a keepsake from Gawain" hits the mark pretty well; by placing Gawain's reference to himself in the third-person at the end of the line, he makes us wonder if the hero isn't buying in a bit too easily to the reputation that has preceded him.I'm not going to repeat the plot of the whole poem here; it's well known, easy to find online, and other amazon reviewers have gone over it. Armitage's confidence as a translator is expressed in his willingness to provide the original language of the poem on a facing page (Borroff's translation does not do this), so the reader can take a long look at the luscious original. Sure, he changes a word here or there (every translation does this), but Armitage is scrupulously true to the spirit of the original.

This book gives instructions for making a wide variety of beautiful doors. It covers several types of doors, and gives a number of examples of each type. It illustrates each door with a photograph and a scale drawing. Step-by-step instructions are not always given, but there is enough detail that a non-expert can understand how to build the door. The instructions and illustrations are clear. There are some nice color photographs, too. It also covers door hardware and how to hang a door.

But here's either a warning or a tip, depending on how you care to look at things. This book is exactly the same, I mean exactly the same as John Birchard's "Doormaking Patterns & Ideas", which you can currently buy used for less than $1. How did I find this out? By unknowingly buying both books and discoverying, to my disappointment, that they are the same book, by the same publisher, with all the same text and pictures, but a different cover and title. Save yourself some money and buy the cheap one. Don't buy both!

Hunting around I found few books...and even fewer of those were even in print. This book provides the basics of door design and construction. It's not a reference guide but it does provide a great deal of data on the different types of doors and how to build them. It's NOT a step-by-step guide or a book for dummies but it does provide a wealth of information.

Jack Ward Thomas, an eminent wildlife biologist and U.S. Forest Service career scientist, was drafted in the late 1980s to head teams of scientists developingstrategies for managing the habitat of the northern spotted owl. That assignment led to his selection as Forest Service chief during the early years of the Clinton administration. It is history's good fortune that Thomas kept journals of his thoughts and daily experiences, and that he is a superb writer able to capture the moment with clarity and grace. The issues Thomas dealt with in office and noted in his journals lie at the heart of recent Forest Service policy and controversy, starting with President Clinton's Timber Summit in Portland, Oregon, dealing with the spotted owl issue, and the 1994 loss of fourteen firefighters in the Storm King Mountain fire in Colorado. Against a constant backdrop of partisan politics in the White House and Congress, Thomas discusses issues ranging from grazing in the national forests, long-term pulp timber sales in Alaska, and the Forest Service Law Enforcement Division to the New World Mine near Yellowstone National Park. He considers the timber salvage rider and its linkage to forest health, the Department of Justice and Counsel on Environmental Quality influence on Forest Service policies, and interagency management for the Columbia River Basin.Woven throughout these excerpts from his diary is Thomas's conviction that the effective, ethical management of wildlife depends on how the management effort is situated within the broader human context, with all its intransigence and unpredictability. Writing in 1995, Thomas says, "Things simply don't work the way that students are taught in natural resources policy classes―not even close. . . .There is simply no way that scholars of the subject can understand the ad hoc processes that go on within only loosely defined boundaries." Wildlife management, he says, is "90 percent about people and 10 percent about animals," and when it comes to learning about people, wildlife managers are on their own. This book is the record of how one man met that challenge.

"This will be a journal of random thoughts," he wrote. "My purpose is unknown to me, but I feel a compulsion to begin. Perhaps it will serve as a tickler of memory for the book I intend to write, but of course never will."This first book from Jack Ward Thomas is sure to open the eyes of those who think they know how policy and management decisions affecting the nation's forests are made. Though Thomas has authored well over 400 publications, mostly on wildlife conservation, perhaps the most valuable thing he's written is the set of journals he started eighteen years ago - the book he intended to write. As Chief of the Forest Service, Thomas is quick to give credit to those he respects, particularly his agency employees in the field. But he doesn't shy from battle, and his assessments of some political appointees in Washington and certain members of Congress are brutal.Thomas was drafted into the chief's job shortly after Clinton took office, and he took the helm of the agency with typical fortitude - and the naiveté of a researcher thrust into the political cauldron that is Washington DC."We don't just manage land," he wrote, "we're supposed to be leaders. Conservation leaders. Leaders in protecting and improving the land."Statements like that surprised some of the people in Washington, but certainly didn't surprise his longtime friends and colleagues. Thomas had been talking about and writing about conservation for most of his life. And the cream of that conservation writing is in his journals. This book offers not only insight into the mind and heart of a naturalist, but also a perspective on the politics of natural resource management through the eyes of one of this country's finest conservationists. His writings clarify many of the environmental issues we face today: protecting obscure but endangered species, dealing with wildfire and wildfire fatalities, balancing resource needs against the need to preserve, and the development of policies to address forest health. This book's a treasure, and will be a valuable addition to the collections of those who care about natural resources management.

A must read to understand how decisions are being made regarding the management of public lands By Chuck During his tenure as Chief of the USFS,Thomas soon was given the nickname of "straight talking Jack" by many employees working at the Ranger District level. We had first hand understanding of how the political forces and courts were dictating land management decisions, rather that what was based on sound natural principals. Chief's Thomas diary document that Clinton and Gore were willing to trade off any decisions based on what was best for the land for their own political gain. Thomas diary also certainly demonstrates the difference in decision making by politically appointed and motivated regulatory agencies vs an agency that has direct responsibility for the land. Probably, other Chiefs of the USFS have faced political pressures. However, Chief Thomas was present at a critical point in the agencies history and certainly the right man for the job during that period. He demonstrated for the politically motivated community of Washington DC how a man of principal and a propose larger that personal gain performs his duties. Thanks Jack for keeping a diary! Chuck

Kelly Jack Ward Thomas appointed by Bill Clinton as Chief of the Forest Service, was the first Chief that was a scientist. All the others have been for better or worse bureaucrats. For understanding Forest Service policy and how it got that way from late 20th century until now this is key book. Incredible insight from perhaps the most astute wildlife biological scientist and forester of our time, into the inner workings of the Federal government and Congress. Jack Ward Thomas in his tenure was truly a civil servant and not a bureaucrat-- he set a standard for government service.

Excerpt from Practical Organ-BuildingThis little work is undertaken because it is believed that no treatise on the construction of organs, at once short, practical, and accessible by all classes of readers, is extant. The bulky volume of Hopkins and Rimbault, worthy as it is of all commendation, and abounding with matter interesting to the musician, does not profess to enter into details essential to the workman. The same remark may be applied to sundry treatises in the form of articles contributed to Encyclopædias, or to periodicals of a popular kind. The writers of these articles, probably fully masters of the subject, cannot, from the very nature of the case, command the time, space, and amplitude of illustration absolutely necessary for the full elucidation of the mechanical processes involved in the construction of the most elaborate and ingenious of all musical instruments.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. America’s largest city generates garbage in torrents―11,000 tons a day on average. But New Yorkers don’t give it much attention. They leave their trash on the curb or drop it in a litter basket, and promptly forget about it. And why not? On a schedule so regular you could almost set your watch by it, someone always comes to take it away.

But who, exactly, is that someone? And why is he―or she―so unknown?

In Picking Up, the anthropologist Robin Nagle introduces us to the men and women of New York City’s Department of Sanitation and makes clear why this small army of uniformed workers is the most important labor force on the streets. Seeking to understand every aspect of the Department’s mission, Nagle accompanied crews on their routes, questioned supervisors and commissioners, and listened to story after story about blizzards, hazardous waste, and the insults of everyday New Yorkers. But the more time she spent with the DSNY, the more Nagle realized that observing wasn’t quite enough ― so she joined the force herself. Driving the hulking trucks, she obtained an insider’s perspective on the complex kinships, arcane rules, and obscure lingo unique to the realm of sanitation workers.

Nagle rivetingly chronicles New York City’s four-hundred-year struggle with trash, and traces the city’s waste-management efforts from a time when filth overwhelmed the streets to the far more rigorous practices of today, when the Big Apple is as clean as it’s ever been.

Throughout, Nagle reveals the many unexpected ways in which sanitation workers stand between our seemingly well-ordered lives and the sea of refuse that would otherwise overwhelm us. In the process, she changes the way we understand cities―and ourselves within them.

Fascinating, well-written and thorough By Amazon Customer In Picking Up, Robin Nagle brings us an unprecedented, meticulously researched and also first-hand look not just at the workings of the Department of Sanitation of the City of New York, but also a look at the people who do the job: from their practical jokes to their sensibility, to what makes them tick and what makes them mad to - and this may be my favorite part - their rich jargon. Nagle didn't just do field work to research the book, she ultimately joined the ranks of the DSNY and worked full time as a "garbageman". The result of her efforts is a rich, beautifully balanced portrait of the DSNY system that I could not put down (and I have absolutely nothing to do with, nor do I know anyone who works in, trash collection). The book argues that trash collection is among the most important (and dangerous) jobs in New York, and it contains a wealth of information about life in throughout the history of the city that could stand on its own as a history of New York.Picking Up would be worth reading if only to learn the DSNY workers' perspective on the disastrous 2010 Christmas Blizzard in New York - a nightmare of failed logistics that was publicly (and, in Nagle's view, wrongly) blamed on DSNY supervisors and rank and file, who were portrayed as bureaucratic, vindictive and irresponsible. The stories of true sacrifice by DSNY employees are deeply moving, and I put the book down with a new-found and admiration and deep respect for those who do the job. This is one great book.

By John Williamson It's difficult for anyone to imagine a good book about trash... call it refuse, rubbish or garbage, whatever you might like. However, sometimes one can be quite surprised, even as a New Yorker.Author Robin Nagle's Picking Up is about the DSNY, the City of New York's Department of Sanitation, and it's an interesting and sometimes fascinating book. As the subtitle "On the Streets and Behind the Trucks with the Sanitation Workers of New York City" suggests, this one takes you down to the road level where the trash bags, garbage cans and dumpsters exist, waiting their scheduled pickup.Ms. Nagle teaches anthropology at New York University, and has been anthropologist-in-residence at the DSNY since 2006. After reading this book, it isn't hard to be a bit more grateful of the efforts of the men and women who clean up after us, regardless of where you live. These unsung heroes are essential to us, unless you're one of those who has to take your own trash to a municipal dump or some such suburban facility. As one reads the pages of this work, it becomes amazing to realize that Manhattan Island itself has historically been extended into both the Hudson and East Rivers by building on its own trash. The author does an excellent job of covering the role of the long history of sanitation and its workers in the Borough of New York, going from such topics as 17th-centuryNew Amsterdam's ban on scavenging pigs to Street Commissioner George E. Waring Jr.'s spotless White Wings cleaning crews at the turn of the 20th century. The author also looks at the command breakdown that tarnished the reputation of the DSNY after the 2010 blizzard. She reveals that the DSNY has its own fascinating jargon: "getting banged" is undergoing corrective disciplinary measures and "disco rice" refers to maggots. The term "mongo" refers to objects salvaged by sanitation workers from the trash, and can be used as either a noun or as a verb. In addition, sanitation workers should be referred to as "san men" and not as "garbage men."We are reminded that sanitation workers have a higher on-the-job death rate than any other uniformed department in the city, firefighters and police officers and firefighters included. They have one of the 10 deadliest jobs in America, due to traffic accidents and exposure to toxic waste, yet their responsibilities are not at all as respected, much less admired. She quotes a sanitation worker: "You can go your whole life without ever having to call a cop. And you can also go your whole life without ever calling a fireman. But you need a sanitation worker every single day."Ms. Nagle's book is not just to make us more aware of sanitation workers. She reminds us that they are New York's Most Essential. She writes: "Sanitation is the most important uniformed force on the street."Picking Up is the result not just of Ms. Nagle's years researching the New York Department of Sanitation, but of a deeply-rooted preoccupation with trash that dates back to her own childhood. She has taken a topic that many of us would pass on, thinking that it would be boring or perhaps even disgusting, but instead we find a book that reads like a novel. Open it and you'll find (and pardon the pun) that it's a good trashy read.5/10/2013

It began with a banana peel being tossed in a garbage chute, and ended with a barge chugging out of a harbor with a sing-songy jingle reciting, "Goodbye, garbage!" I was always troubled by that segment - notwithstanding the obviously absurd implication that garbage dumped in the ocean ceases to exist, I also felt that there must be more - a LOT more - to the story. Years later, I sometimes observed rumbling garbage trucks and wondered about their mission and the people who carried it out.Enter Dr. Robin Nagle, anthropologist, professor, and sanitation worker. "Picking Up" is a moving, gritty, and sometimes laugh-out-loud-funny meditation on sanitation in the modern world. Nagle considers sanitation workers the single most important uniformed force in New York City, and after recovering from the audacity of such an idea, I had to acknowledge its plausibility. Her descriptions of New York BEFORE modern sanitation opened my eyes to blessings I never realized I had. I used to think of the City as grimy, even dirty, but compared to the ankle-deep filth and rampant disease of earlier times, I now recognize its astonishing cleanliness. This is one of the most literate books I have ever read. Nagle tips her hat to at least half-a-dozen literary works, from Dante's "Inferno" to Douglas Adams's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". That, the exhaustive end notes, and the occasional word that sent me to a dictionary ("peristaltic"??), engendered a deep respect for the author's scholarship. I am relatively well-read, with an above-average education, but Nagle's prose led me to intellectual depths I never even knew were there.I felt that "Picking Up" is about so much more than just garbage and sanitation workers. This is a book linked to universal human experience, through the basic life functions essential to one of today's most vibrant and challenging urban centers.

Public Domain book written in 1913 By TLC Handy Girl This feels like it's book two of a series but the other two books that Amazon offers have copyright dates after this one. The first chapter drops you right in the middle of a scene and it's a little disorienting at first. You get the idea of what's going on eventually, but the author alludes to previous events like there must be another book out there. I'm going to keep looking as it would be nice to get the details of what came before this portion of Polly's life. This book is a slice of life story about an orphan who was adopted by her doctor and his new wife and what happens to her after she's been with them for about a year. You get a sense of what life was like for a working doctor during that time period and some of the social problems Polly had while being an adopted orphan and going to a private school that had girls from more wealthy families in it. Polly is about 10 years old in this book and over the course of the story meets a few cousins she didn't know she had and has to decide whether she wants to stay with Dr. Dudley and his wife (whom she loves dearly but aren't rich) and her "new" Uncle (who is). Will she choose an exciting lifestyle with no more wants or needs over love?Polly kind of reminds me of Anne of Green Gables except that she doesn't have the orphan "nobody wants me" attitude. She's a little ray of sunshine and makes you smile when you read about her.I'd recommend this book to young girls who want to know what it was like for girls of their age during another time period.

Excerpt from Industrial Arts Design: A Textbook of Practical Methods for Students, Teachers, and CraftsmenPlace for the Book. As a textbook, Industrial Arts Design is a practical guide for designing in wood, clay, and base and precious metals. It is intended for individual student use in the High Schools, Normal Schools, and Colleges and as a reference book for elementary school teachers. Its more complex problems are intended as definite helps to the industrial arts designer or craftsman. The wood problems are treated with special reference to their adaptability to bench and cabinet work.Need of the Book. It has been written to fill a decided demand for a textbook that shall, without loss of time, directly apply well-recognized principles of general design to specific materials and problems encountered in the Industrial Arts. A brief description of the decorative processes adapted to the materials under discussion with the design principles directly applying to these processes, insures designs that may be worked out in the studio or shop. It is hoped that this provision will eliminate the large number of impractical designs that are frequently entirely unfitted to the technic of the craft. This lack of mutual technical understanding between the teacher of design and the shop work instructor is the cause of friction that it is hoped will be removed by the methods advocated in these pages. The Author's Motive. It has been the intention to reduce unrelated and abstract theories to a minimum and reach directly rules and conclusions that shall be applicable to typical materials in common use in the schools and industries. The original conception materialized in the publication of a series of articles upon Design in the Industrial Arts Magazine, in 1915. These articles were favorably received and their results in the schools proved highly satisfactory. Through this encouragement, the articles have been reprinted in book form, enriched by the addition of illustrations, review questions, and three chapters on color with its applications.Industrial Arts Design develops the principles of industrial design in a new and logical form which, it is believed, will simplify the teaching of craft design. Chapters I to V deal with the elementary problems confronting the designer as he begins the first steps on his working drawing; Chapters VI to VIII show the methods by which he may express his individuality through contour or outline enrichment, while Chapters IX to XVII explain the treatment of the most difficult form of decoration, that of surface enrichment.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dahle This is an old book and I had to read well into the fourth chapter before I figured out what the author was talking about. Then suddenly I realized that I was holding a guide book to arts and crafts design. I began to see that the author was talking about the proportions and design sensibilities of the Arts and Crafts movement and applying them to everything that might exist in the built environment, from book cases to motor cars. I've long been drawn to Arts and Crafts style houses, cabinets, and furniture, but had trouble creating my own designs to solve modern problems while retaining the lines and feel of the arts and crafts movement. Scaling a classic Stickley design to create, for example, a media cabinet, just wasn't working for me. I knew I needed to work from a fresh sheet of paper and not just copy or incorporate arts and crafts elements to get the Craftsman look. With this book, I have another piece of the puzzle. It is a sort of exercise book that might have been used in secondary schools between the wars. It is hard to follow and presumably the students who used this also had an industrial arts instructor prodding them in the right direction. But after a while I found I really could figure it out, particularly if I read it while sitting at a drafting board with pencil and t-square instead of trying to doodle it out in Sketch-Up.Neat little book.

Four-time Formula One Drivers' Champion Alain Prost is one of the best racing drivers of all time.Having discovered karting at the age of 14 during a family holiday, Prost progressed through motorsport's junior ranks, winning the French and European Formula Three championships, before joining the McLaren Formula One team in 1980 at the age of 24. In his six seasons with McLaren, Alain Prost won 30 races and three driving titles and in 1985 he became the first French World Champion. In 1986 he became the first back-to-back champion since Jack Brabham 26 years earlier. In 1987, his 28th Grand Prix victory beat Jackie Stewart's 14-year-old record. However, in 1988 his brilliant new team mate Ayrton Senna won eight races and the driving title. Thus began the sensational rivalry that conspired to push two of the sport's greatest drivers to unprecedented heights of success and controversy, and the most bitter feud in Formula One history.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. one of the best drivers in Formula 1 By Elaine Haines A really well written book about, I think, one of the best drivers in Formula 1.It seemed to deal with his life in a very measured and correct way. There has been so much controversy about This man but I felt the book dealt with it in the best way possible as you heard from the other drivers, the managers and perhaps most importantly, the mechanics. All was positive.I would highly recommend this book and also the amazing photography.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great By Daniel J. Jordan Well written, and gets to the heart of Prost the driver and Prost the man. Excellent inside views of Prost v. Senna and their relationship

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A small dissapointment... By Botnik Roller Beware: this is a coffee table book (as one can see by the square format of the book). I knew that.I knew the photos would be the strong point (and they are indee good - not spectacular, but good). But I did not think that the text would be so weak. Instead of a text completely written by seasoned journalist Maurice Hamilton, all we have are excerpts from interviews,

HAS THE REAL SHAKESPEARE BEEN OVERLOOKED FOR FOUR CENTURIES? Records of William Shakespeare’s life are at odds with many authorial traits revealed in the Bard’s works, including the author’s specialized knowledge of the law, aristocratic sports, Italian geography and customs, and untranslated Italian, Greek, and French literary works. Even so, the Stratford actor kept the “Shakespeare” title for a century and a half after the authorship debate began, due to the lack of any more plausible authorship scenario. In 2011, Dr. Sabrina Feldman showed in The Apocryphal William Shakespeare that William Shakespeare is the most likely author of the ‘apocryphal’ Shakespeare plays and ‘bad quartos,’ and that members of the Elizabethan literati revered a major hidden court poet, most likely the statesman Thomas Sackville (1536-1608), who was subject to an aristocratic ‘stigma of print.’ In this sequel, Dr. Feldman introduces the case for Sackville as Shakespeare. Sackville’s youthful poetic works paved the way to the flowering of the late Elizabethan drama, and he later became a hidden poet. Despite being long overlooked as an authorship candidate, he had not only the specialized knowledge, unusual interests, habits of mind, personal traits, stylistic traits, and lifespan to be Shakespeare, but also the very high poetic ability.

Thomas Sackville and the Shakespearean Glass Slipper: Book Two of A 'Third Way' Shakespeare Authorship ScenarioBy Sabrina Feldman

Review "Feldman is unquestionably convincing as a proponent of the pleasures of exploring the works from a new angle, 'discovering how many lesser known and seldom performed Shakespearean works take on an entirely new interest and meaning from a Sackvillian perspective.' ...gives Stratfordian skeptics a strong new contender for the man behind the works. An enthusiastic and unique assessment of the Shakespeare authorship question that, while still leaving the debate unresolved, may convince even open-minded Stratfordians of the plausibility of its analysis." -Kirkus Reviews

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Feldman's second volume is as much fun as her first By D. D. Montee Having greatly enjoyed Ms. Feldman’s first volume of several years ago (The Apocryphal William Shakespeare: Book One of a “Third Way” Shakespeare Authorship Scenario), I eagerly anticipated her Book Two—but not, I confess, without some trepidation. The first volume was chock full of fascinating detail and insight into the Golden Age of Modern English Drama; but once an author—particularly an “anti-Stratfordian”—displays in full view the theoretical axe that they wish to grind, more often than not they begin to lose my full attention and admiration. I’m not a dyed-in-the wool “Stratfordian”—I like to keep as open a mind as I can on the different proposals and perspectives of scholars as they examine the thorny issues of authorship in the Elizabethan/Jacobean plays—but I have to admit that none of the alternate scenarios offered by the advocates of Oxford, Bacon, Marlowe, Mary Sidney, et. al., have persuaded me, however intriguing and fascinating their arguments might prove. That said, I’m pleased to report that Ms. Feldman’s Book Two is as entertaining and informative as her first volume. I think that I’m probably the perfect audience for both her theoretical approach as well as her wonderfully clear and unpretentious writing style: I’ve loved reading, performing in, directing, and publishing about William Shakespeare for decades. The questions, historical gaps, and biographical inconsistencies that nag at the anti-Stratfordians also nag at me; and yet, I certainly can find it within the realm of plausibility that the young country boy named Will Shakespeare could very well have been the natural theatrical genius that the Stratfordians argue for.Ms. Feldman’s ingenious proposal offers a potential bridge between the two camps; and it does so with wonderful research, illuminating insights and a clear and breezy writing style that does not demand years of academic study and prior knowledge to follow. As Eric Sams (whose work Ms. Feldman refers to on occasion in the book) lamented years ago, Shakespearean scholarship and academia is unfortunately too often a closed and exclusive club, rather incestuous, repeating and building upon ideas that should long ago have been largely put to rest. (The so-called “bad quartos” being memorial reconstructions of good texts, to give one such example.) Ms. Feldman’s books disarmingly show the absurdities of many of these accepted ideas, while at the same time pointing us in new directions that more established and recognized Shakespearean scholars might themselves (and should) have directed us toward decades ago—if they hadn’t been so busy reading and re-hashing their colleagues’ books ad infinitum.Sabrina Feldman’s “day job” is at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (impressive enough on its own!); she does her work on Shakespeare out of pure love for the subject—and it shows in these wonderfully entertaining and enlightening books. I highly recommend them both…but read The Apocryphal William Shakespeare: Book One first! Even if you don’t completely accept her hypotheses on the origins of these classics of dramatic literature, you will learn an amazing amount about the plays, their creators, and the age that gave them birth.

The author's earlier book "The Apocryphal William Shakespeare" looks at the often-overlooked works attributed to Shakespeare that were not included in the canon. For me it changedmy thinking about Shakespeare as much as Elaine Pagel's "The Gnostic Gospels" changed my thinkingabout Christianity, and I return to it again and again. Here in Book Two she extends the argumentand makes a compelling case for a new candidate. Despite a wealth of research the book is fun toread- her style is always engaging and often very persuasive. Very highly recommended.

By Rory1959 Dr. Feldman's previous book, about the Shakespeare Apocrypha, was a great read because there was so much to it - review of play after play, poem after poem, evaluation of many more "data points" than any other argument about the Authorship Question that I have seen. This book is the same. As always when looking back 400 years, there's a certain amount of speculation, but that's always clearly stated. Many chapters, though, are startling in the depth of the argument. You'll find that Sackville was familiar with the setting of the play, then that he was familiar with the sources, then with historic events that seem to be alluded (Sackville's dog even makes an appearance), then with the philosophical concepts the play seems to incorporate, then with the subjects Shakespeare chose in creating allegories. When that's all done, there are parallel quotes from Sackville's few extant works to many of Shakespeare's works - so many that you'd think Shakepeare had a Sackville "Quote of the Day" calendar on his writing table. Dr. Feldman's argument covers about 300 pages, but there's so much information on every page that you would think it's many more than that. It's an excellent read for anyone!
