This book is dedicated to Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, who was the playwright and poet we know as “Shakespeare,” one of the most accomplished, and tragic, figures in human history, who, by an improbable turn of events, was destined to die unrecognized as the flesh- and-blood person behind the “Shakespeare” pseudonym. He tells us in his Sonnets that "my name be buried where my body is," but he also tells us in these very same Sonnets his own true story, a story of how one of the greatest men in world history wound up dispossessed of his life's work and erased from history. It is a story told indirectly and subrosa, in a unique coded language. But it is there, and it is amazing.

Hidden In Plain SightBy Peter Rush

About the Author Peter Rush is a professional analyst in the field of information technology, with a lifelong passion for history. He graduated Swarthmore College in 1969 and earned a Masters in History from the University of Michigan in 1973. He was drawn to the Shakespeare Authorship issue sixteen years ago because of his commitment to employing evidence-based methodologies to contentious issues and his interest in historical research. Since then, he has immersed himself in the controversy, including writing several newsletter articles and reviews for organizations involved in the Shakespeare authorship issue. He has also conducted extensive research on the Sonnets because, following the breakthrough discoveries of Hank Whittemore on the structure and meaning of the Sonnets, he believed that the Sonnets might hold vital clues that could finally resolve the controversy once and for all.

Ray Peter Rush’s 'Hidden In Plain Sight' is a significant publishing event in the history of modern Shakespeare Studies. The study provides the first closely reasoned rebuttal to what mainstream scholars have mistakenly assumed the Sonnets were and meant, i.e., a lovelorn diarist poet infatuated with a youth. In place of that cliche, Rush explicates the circumstances of the Essex Rebellion as first theorized by Hank Whittemore, author of 'The Monument'.Four respected critics of SHAKE-SPEARES SONNETS with whom Rush takes issue, all universally praised in the periodical press as profound and insightful thinkers, are shown to be incompetent at explaining the subject of the poems. The simple reason is that neither they nor modern History have ever known the crucible of historical events from which the Sonnets emerged. On the contrary, they could only speculate what these world-famous words meant if written by a Warwickshire countryman. Unfortunately nothing fit. Identifying “Shakespeare” with the Stratford Miracle Myth is a Shakespeare-industry-wide mistake, one intentionally insinuated into the First Folio front matter. Its purpose, achieved mainly through the clever language of Ben Jonson, was to avoid destabilizing political effects while ushering the Shakespeare dramatic works into permanent print-based reality.Lacking these backroom elements of an accurate and connected History, Shakespeare Studies has been invited into the hopeless stance of applying critical generalities, abstractions that evaporate overnight into nothing, like Narcissus’ fleeting image in the pool of water. But intellectuals are not entitled to profess nothings.Providing the missing historical context, Rush's book places the Sonnets in its correct frame: repressive Elizabethan England, specifically the Essex Rebellion of 1601.To the point. According to Rush’s research, the bastard son of Elizabeth I, Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, took part in actions judged to be a state rebellion. He was tried and sentenced to die––with his own father, Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, leading the Queen’s jury. de Vere was revered as the author of the foundational Narrative of the English State, later to be known as Shakespeare’s Histories. The political crisis became recorded, through the Sonnets' art, as a live depiction of the father's, de Vere's, personal anguish and agony, without names, just allusions to the principals of a vanishing Kingship. The Sonnets, which as fragmentary verse we can only label ‘high poetry’, chronologically seize in amber the political tragedy of father and son. The third member of the family triangle appears to have been Elizabeth I, the outwardly Virgin Queen. In short, SHAKE-SPEARES SONNETS was and remains political dynamite. Only thirteen copies survived. Accordingly, they were minimized since the later Jacobean era as romantic rhyme. That this summary sounds like fiction is owing to our official history being the result of selectively destroyed documents. This was most probably the work of Robert Cecil, the younger First Secretary to the Queen, de Vere's hostile brother-in-law. The ensuing informational vacuum over time has choked off anything like accurate memory of the events and participants surrounding the Sonnets. The language however remains forever through the permanence of print. The official eclipse of the primary political problem, de Vere, Southampton's father, followed by the eventual poisoning of Southampton his son––and his grandson James, eliminated the Tudor bloodline and buttressed the Stewart dynasty for a few decades. The unwritten underbelly saga is today’s incipient early modern English History, at last on the verge of widespread understanding in the Western World. All readers will then appreciate the poetry as a cohesive cycle, not a somewhat puzzling text containing several universal sonnets. The eyewitness text has always been available, just never rightly comprehended. Rush’s primer serves as an invaluable translator of the poems, heretofore covert, but now readable in the person of the necessarily pseudonymous “Shakespeare”.Peter Rush honors the first investigator into the explosive political circumstances behind the verses, Hank Whittemore. But his book stands on its own as a detailed and accessible path to the historical and tragically poetical truth of that time. It is considerably shorter and more of a story than Whittemore's huge scholarly text.An indication to me of the quality of the book is that I found no typographical errors over 382 pages. The appendices are also extremely helpful. Appendix I summarizes the Stratford narrative and its failings, basically a catch-all of suppositions peddled for centuries as fact. Appendix II encapsulates the life and work of Oxford the literary genius for those with no background knowledge of the time. Appendix III is Hank Whittemore’s essay about the “other” Shakespeare poems which are virtually ignored in the discussions of the authorship question. The 'other' works are intimately tied to Elizabeth and Southampton.Appendix IV, Whittemore’s “Southampton’s Tower Poem” essay, deserves widespread publication. Included here as background, it substantiates that Southampton and Oxford were in close contact while the young Earl was imprisoned. The proof is in the comparative reading. The language Southampton used to plead to Elizabeth for his life during the Essex Rebellion parallels what must have been the unpublished, utterly loyal, Sonnets. Appendix V contains Rush’s Theorems, listing the cardinal points of the historical analysis. Appendix VI is a useful index to the Sonnet discussions. In all, the book represents a labor of love and of conscience, a harbinger of future historically related Shakespeare scholarship.

Input from a many-years, died-in-the-wool Stratfordian By Uncle Ruddy This is a very thoughtfully written, erudite and readable book which I recommend everyone with any interest at all in the Shakespeare authorship question should read. Over the past 15 years I have read many books covering many opinions, starting with Looney and proceeding through Ogburn, Price, Roe, Whittemore (and that is just for the Oxfordians), Edmondson, Wells, etc, etc. Rush has done a masterful, very readable job in making Whittemore's brilliant and thorough research come alive and be accessible to everyone, while at the same time adding his own excellent research to the many points he addresses. For those who have already read Whittemore or done other research on the issue, the book, for me, really took off staring with Chapter 12' "Reprieve By Misprision" and it just kept getting better. Having shed the conventional wisdom of my Stratfordian beliefs probably 10 years or so ago, at 70 I am a confirmed Oxfordian and a firm believer, now more than ever having read Rush's excellent work, in the Prince Tudor theory. While my analogy is not perfect, I have come around to feel that believing that the Stratford man could write the canon is like believing Sam Walton could have written "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

8 of 11 people found the following review helpful. The truth has been hiding in plain sight and Nothing is Truer than Truth. By Christopher Plummer With 'Hidden In Plain Sight', Peter Rush takes up the mantle from the incomparable Hank Whittemore, as he further decodes Shake-Speare's sonnets. Though it seemed an impossible and somewhat futile task, due to the exhaustive and unparalleled research from Whittemore, the very Monument that Whittemore has created has lead Rush to press on, deeper into the forest of lies in order to save us all from them. Untangling the carefully woven vines of deception that have held us back from the truth for far, far too long, Rush, like Whittemore before him, has forged ahead and reinforced the conclusions made by Whittemore and taken great strides forward in solidifying the true meanings of the sonnets and their raison d'etre. Both Whittemore and Rush are now responsible for gently guiding us to stare into the dazzlingly colorful mosaic of the sonnets and whispering the simple trick to make our eyes adjust, revealing their true intention, the incredible mind that conceived of them and the tornado of blissful pain that surrounded their birth. Whether you believe that one person created the plays of William Shake-Speare or not, the sonnets are, without doubt, the work of a single mind and the breadcrumbs have finally lead us from the dark forest and to the feet of Edward De Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford.

Excerpt from Dynamos and Dynamo Design: Direct Current Motors; Alternating Currents; Alternators; Alternating-Current ApparatusThe International Library of Technology is the outgrowth of a large and increasing demand that has arisen for the Reference Libraries of the International Correspondence Schools on the part of those who are not students of the Schools. As the volumes composing this Library are all printed from the same plates used in printing the Reference Libraries above mentioned, a few words are necessary regarding the scope and purpose of the instruction imparted to the students of - and the class of students taught by - these Schools, in order to afford a clear understanding of their salient and unique features. The only requirement for admission to any of the courses offered by the International Correspondence Schools, is that the applicant shall be able to read the English language and to write it sufficiently well to make his written answers to the questions asked him intelligible. Each course is complete in itself, and no textbooks are required other than those prepared by the Schools for the particular course selected. The students themselves are from every class, trade, and profession and from every country; they are, almost without exception, busily engaged in some vocation, and can spare but little time for study, and that usually outside of their regular working hours. The information desired is such as can be immediately applied in practice, so that the student may be enabled to exchange his present vocation for a more congenial one, or to rise to a higher level in the one he now pursues. Furthermore, he wishes to obtain a good working knowledge of the subjects treated in the shortest time and in the most direct manner possible.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Excavation: Machinery Methods and Costs; Including a Revision of "Excavating Machinery"A noteworthy development in the field of excavating machinery has taken place since the publication of the book, "Excavating Machinery" in 1913. The author has received so many requests for information concerning the more recent types of excavators and the newer uses of older types, that it has seemed desirable to present this work. The new book embodies some of the material of the former work, but is entirely re-cast and largely re-written. The new text has two general divisions; the first comprising a description of the construction, method and typical cost of operation of each type of excavator, and the second embodying a comparative study of the efficient and economic use of the different types of machines in the various fields of construction work. The author has endeavored to describe the make and types of excavators commonly used in all classes of work. He has not attempted to describe or even mention every make of excavator, but every type has been treated in sufficient detail to give a clear idea of its construction and field of work. The cost data are not intended to be an arbitrary guide for the use of any type of excavator in any stated class of work. The conditions and circumstances attending work of this character are so variable, and there are usually so many unforeseen factors which affect the progress of a job, that information of this kind can only be suggestive. The illustrative "costs of operation" given in the first division, are merely typical outlines. The quantities should be modified to suit local conditions and combined with ruling prices to secure usable cost data for any definite case. In the second division the cost data have been selected to offer a variety of conditions on recent examples of earthwork. No attempt has been made to standardize these data or to formulate the results for any series of operations for any type of machine. The author has derived many equations from his experience, but hesitates to publish them on account of their possible misuse.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Concrete Pottery and Garden FurnitureSo Much interest has been manifested of late in ornamental concrete, and so little seems to be known about the unlimited possibilities of the artistic treatment of this material, that the author has endeavored in the following chapters to explain in detail how concrete can be made into objects of art.Numerous inquiries have come to me from craftsmen who are anxious to work in this material but none of whom understand the nature of the material or the method in which it is to be handled. It is such in particular I had in mind when preparing this work and have therefore been most minute in my descriptions of how the various pieces described are to be made. I have taken for granted that the reader knows nothing whatever about the material and have explained each progressive step in the various operations throughout in detail.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Search a site like archive.org. You might want to at least see if you like it before buying a copy. The author is long gone so I don't think he'll mind.Enjoy!

It's a truly wonderful craftsman's manual on how to make victorian-style concrete pottery---the kind that you would see in a beautiful victorian garden or mansion. Although very old, it's filled with photo demonstrations and diagrams of exactly what to do. It shows beautifully crafted planters with ornate relief work and the craftsman's techniques of making it. The book is a how-to book. I have never seen another book like this. I am surprised that it has not been republished, because there are a lot of people out there who have an interest in making things at home for their own garden, and garden ornaments and potter are becoming more and more popular. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.

Excerpt from Logging: The Principles and General Methods of Operation in the United StatesThe marked development, during the past decade, in power logging machinery and methods has made it desirable to revise the first edition. A chapter has also been added on the use of crawler tractors in logging work because their rapid adaptation to the loggers needs indicates the extensive adoption of this form of equipment. This chapter has been prepared by A. Koroleff, a Russian forest engineer, who has spent much tune in studying the use of this kind of equipment on logging operations in the United States. The subject matter has been rearranged, in part, to better meet the needs of the teacher and student and much of the text has been rewritten.Acknowledgment is here made to those whose constructive criticisms and suggestions relating to the revision of the first edition have proved invaluable, and also to all others who have aided in the preparation of the text.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After a 20 year hiatus from writing poetry, Wendy composed 20 volumes of spiritual poetry which began during a trip to Scotland in 2001. This series of spiritual poetry awakens one to the Truth within as we walk the Path, the journey, and wake from the slumber of separation from parts of self andstep into full union with self and divinity. The resulting self-forgiveness allows one to step forward in wholeness without the false archetype of perfection. When blame and self-judgment are transformed, healed, and cease to be, we have reawakened without the myth, the mythos, of separation. We are One.

Into the Hearth, Poems-Volume 14 (The Traduka Wisdom Series)By Wendy E. Slater

Review "This is a very dangerous book of songs. You will find yourself overwhelmed, engulfed, and swept away into the very intimate heart fire of Wendy Slater, the feminine heart fire of love, and in the end you will be left in ashes, totally in love without any object whatsoever, yearning for more." ~John A. Perks, Author of The Mahasiddha and His Idiot Servant, Ven. Seonaidh Perks, Celtic Buddhist lineage"Wendy Slater's beautifully crafted verse moves from the pain of farewell to the excitement of arrival, in what may or may not be the 'land of jasmine, gold and incense,' which she at least reaches 'knowing / Where I belong and who I am.' Her evocations of the world's beauty, from the familiar to the exotic, serve as a path leading to the inner world of self, while travels reinforce the conviction that the most valuable excursions are those that lead into the heart, and hearth, of truth." ~ Rosemary Lloyd, Litt.D (Cambridge), scholar and translator, and author of Baudelaire's World

From the Author My life experience continues to be a personal healing journey of self knowledge, gained by participating in and or observing all facets of my own life story. I seek the meaning of life by giving my own life meaning. Originally a liberal arts student in the 1980's, I gravitated toward science (i.e., the genetics of small captive societies) during my years of academic study and increasingly became aware, and an advocate, of the interconnectedness of all living things. This understanding was refined through years of an undiagnosed illness, beginning in 1991, that gradually incapacitated me during the first half of the 1990's. Ill served by traditional medicine, I sought the help of a holistic medical doctor who introduced me to his world of alternative, nontraditional medicine, beginning with ortho molecular medicine and vitamin therapy, and culminating, among other things, with acupuncture, homeopathy, intuitive healing, radionics, psychic healing, shamanistic healing, herbs, essences, and Chi Gong. Like Diogenes searching the world for an honest man, I searched traditional and nontraditional medicine for healing. My journey made me increasingly aware that all human societies, throughout the Ages, in each era or geographic location, recognize healers, regardless of the nature of the treatments offered, who communicate with life force energy, external to the individual but at the same time resident within the self. My realization that balance between these forms of life force energies is key to well-being led me to study and gain experience in radionics, homeopathy, iridology, and meditation; as a Reiki Master Teacher, a certified Jin Shin Jyutsu® practitioner and self-help instructor, and as a student of Tibetan Yoga teacher training; and in Chi Gong, the healing properties of herbs, flower and gem essences, healing crystals and gems, and quantum healing.

Slater is a collection of poems assembled into a 14th Volume. This reader probably is not the best suited to review any modern author’s poems. My acquaintance with poetry stems from a far more formal time and study of Elizabethan and 17th Century Poets plus instruction in ‘The Bard’s plays by a prominent student of the ‘one and only’ Shakespearean authority Kittredge. Thus, although I occasionally read Free Verse and other ‘newer’ forms, my ability to completely empathize is somewhat lacking. However. It does appear that the author has provided an interesting series that speaks caressingly of subjects extending from the familiar to the exotic, rest and travel, of arrivals and departures, and of peace, love, compassion and most especially of self-discovery and the overwhelming importance of heart and hearth. This is a collection I believe aficionados will enjoy.

This is how I came upon the heart-rendering poetry of Wendy E. Slater, in her latest release, Into the Hearth. “Heart-rendering” is exactly what happens when one feeds upon the words out of which I imagine Wendy’s own heart was reborn and made whole. At least that was my experience when feasting upon her words. Part confession, part soul-retrieval, one is laid bare through the gentle nuances of Wendy’s willingness to be naked, vulnerable and uncompromisingly honest about the midlife journey of “Everywoman” – born out of the pain of loss and out of the labor of the Soul’s excavation, exhuming the corpses of what has been to discover what will be. Thank you Wendy for baring your own Soul so that other women, like you, might be free in the true liberation that midlife brings. Lauri Ann Lumby, author of Returning - a woman's midlife journey to herself, and Song of the Beloved - the Gospel According to Mary Magdalene.

In fact one CD is dedicated to Mother's Day and is almost a duplicate of the Maternal Combustion CD. With so many programs and so few CD's I don't know why they duplicate them. If you don't already own any of their other CDs then this set would be worthwhile.

Four Entire Episodes, Not Edited Highlights By DWD's Reviews The hosts of NPR's "Car Talk", Tom and Ray Magliozzi, offer highlights from their radio show with the theme of motherhood. If you are not familiar with the show, well it is unique. Two brothers who aren't really mechanics (but do have a lot of experience fixing cars) take calls about cars and car repair. They laugh and mercilessly kid one another and sometimes actually get around to offering advice on how to fix a car. This a a 4 CD set featuring four entire hour-long episodes, which is different than many of their collections that are composed of a series of edited segments. While this is mostly highly entertaining, especially the segment with Martha Stewart (to me, Stewart can seem stuffy and stiff on her show. She rolls with these two jokesters and their enjoyable, sophomoric antics and holds her own and exhibits a quick wit) there are segments that I could only characterize as wearisome, such as the childhood letters home from summer camp from a staff member of the show, John "Bugsy" Lawlor. Thankfully, it is fairly short and the brothers get back to taking phone calls. The calls in this one are interesting, including an Aussie who wants the recommendation of a good car to drive in Colorado, a woman who went behind the back of her regular mechanic and took her car someone else and my favorite, the man who has a faulty dashboard indicator that keeps telling him that his engine is out of oil. The only way he can get it to stop is to pound on his dashboard, a technique that causes the brothers to nearly fall out of their chairs as they envision him driving and angrily pounding away. The third CD in this set is a Mother's Day tribute featuring their mother. Most if not all of this material is on another CD that I recently listened to and reviewed, Car Talk: Maternal Combustion: Calls About Moms and Cars.

Lowenthal I'm such a fan of the NPR show Car Talk, where Tom and Roy answer callers' questions about their cars, with equal parts humor and intelligence. This CD set includes some "Classic" shows, such as the time that the brothers' own mother appeared on the show (or called into the show) and the time that Martha Stewart appeared as a guest on the show. They manage to pick friendly, articulate callers, and the banter with the callers is always a blast. Listening to Car Talk in my car turns a boring drive to work into a party! These guys leave me laughing all the time and definitely improve my mood. If you've had a bad day, this CD set is great therapy!

Excerpt from Theory and Calculation of Electric CircuitsIn the twenty years since the first edition of "Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena" appeared, electrical engineering has risen from a small beginning to the world's greatest industry; electricity has found its field, as the means of universal energy transmission, distribution and supply, and our knowledge of electrophysics and electrical engineering has increased many fold, so that subjects, which twenty years ago could be dismissed with a few pages discussion, now have expanded and require an extensive knowledge by every electrical engineer. In the following volume I have discussed the most important characteristics of the fundamental conception of electrical engineering, such as electric conduction, magnetism, wave shape, the meaning of reactance and similar terms, the problems of stability and instability of electric systems, etc., and also have given a more extended application of the method of complex quantities, which the experience of these twenty years has shown to be the most powerful tool in dealing with alternating current phenomena. In some respects, the following work, and its companion volume, "Theory and Calculation of Electrical Apparatus," may be considered as continuations, or rather as parts of "Theory and Calculation of Alternating Current Phenomena." With the 4th edition, which appeared nine years ago, "Alternating Current Phenomena" had reached about the largest practical bulk, and when rewriting it for the 5th edition, it became necessary to subdivide it into three volumes, to include at least the most necessary structural elements of our knowledge of electrical engineering. The subject matter thus has been distributed into three volumes: "Alternating Current Phenomena," "Electric Circuits," and "Electrical Apparatus."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Great edition of an old book, interesting read, great info, read it with a grain salt By Ssound This is a really good book by the father of electricity. He was a very good explainer although some words or expressions may be unfamiliar due to the age difference. This book is a great read but should be read with grain of salt, you have to be aware that the stuff in this book is more than 100 years old, many of the chapters are plain obsolete, and many of the techniques, theories and materials were not invented or discovered back then so you shouldnt take literally everything this book says. However most of the core information of the book hasnt changed over the last 100 years, Steinmetz who first described magnetic hysteresis, makes a very fine job explaining it in this book, most of the book is focused on the magnetic effects of materials, hystereresis and its impact on electric circuits, this book should provide a solid foundation on magnetic hysteresis, complemented with a more modern book which approaches new materials and techniques. As for the edition of this book, I must say it is great, no missing words, formulas or images, the paper quality is quite good, relatively thick yellowish paper, also the print quality is quite good. I've seen complete editorial disasters with these old Steinmetz books, in which pages will be missing, or graphs and formulas will be chopped off, etc.. this is not the case with this book, this one is very clean, I wish the quality of the other Steinmetz books could be as good as this one.

Systemic global risks of oil supply, climate shock and financial collapse threaten tomorrow's economies and mean businesses and policy makers face huge challenges in fuelling tomorrow’s world.

Jeremy Leggett gives a personal testimony of the dangers often ignored and incompletely understood - a journey through the human mind, the institutionalization of denial, and the reasons civilizations fail. It is also an account of tantalizing hope, because mobilizing renewables and redeploying energy funding can soften the crash of modern capitalism and set us on a road to renaissance.

The Energy of Nations: Risk Blindness and the Road to RenaissanceBy Jeremy Leggett

Review

"[Leggett's] insider perspective on the energy business leaves him ideally placed to narrate with authority the story of an industry hurtling towards crisis ― and the refusal of its leaders to acknowledge it... The Energy of Nations reads like a thriller." - Helen Massy-Beresford, Oxford Today

“A story very well told. As far as I am aware there is no one on this planet who has a comparable all-encompassing, multi-disciplinary view and understanding of these issues to Leggett's.” – Stephan Schmidheiny, founder, World Council for Sustainable Development

“It really is a terrific read - very unveiling of our human struggle between greed and legacy.” – Stephan Dolezalek, Managing Director, Vantage Point Capital Partners.

“I was so captivated by it. The narrative device of running the years and the oil price gives it power and tension. The inter-weaving of account and candid diary makes one feel one has a front-row seat at the places where things almost happen.” – Adam Poole, Analyst, Buro-Happold

“I was hooked within the first few pages.” – Pamela Hartigan, Director, Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Said Business School, University of Oxford

“The narrative flows compellingly, filmically, almost like an airport thriller.” – Mark Prain, Executive Director, Hillary Institute of International Leadership

“At a time when most people view tomorrow's energy prospects through dark lenses of coal, oil, fracked gas or even methane hydrates, Jeremy Leggett shines a brilliant light on the path towards low or zero carbon energy. Illuminating. And a joy to read.” – John Elkington, cofounder of ENDS, SustainAbility and Volans.

"Brilliant–a real roadmap to the future. And a perfect reminder of why we must leave most fossil fuel safely in the ground." – Bill McKibben, Founder, 350.org

"Jeremy Leggett is one of great entrepreneurs of the emerging solar era, a man driven by his passion for the environment and for social justice in the developing world to set up a new business (and a new charity) to give expression to those ideas. ‘ The Energy of Nations’ tells it as it needs to be heard, with new – and genuinely sustainable – business models at the heart of today’s transformation going on today in the global economy" – Jonathon Porritt, Founder Director, Forum for the Future

"To understand what is going on you need to be a polymath who has worked at the highest levels on all sides. Jeremy Leggett is that person, and he provides clarity of thinking in a consistently delightful written style." – Paul Dickinson, Chairman, Carbon Disclosure Project.

"Leggett’s The Energy of Nations is the key to the "next big thing" for investors and asset managers worldwide." – Hazel Henderson, Seeking Alpha

"The Energy of Nations is a stimulatingpolemic that paints the ongoing drive to move away from carbon-based fossil fuels as a titanic struggle in which mankind struggles to overcome its darker instincts – greed and denial – in order to ensure the future survival of the human race." – Real Power

"By focusing throughout on risks and opportunities, Leggett avoids the mistakes of those who offer fixed forecasts of almost unavoidable extinction, instead setting out an analysis of global trends and what's driving them. […]Leggett's reserved optimism speaks to the real possibility of a rocky transition to a post-capitalist, post-materialist global society that transcends the crisis-generating dynamics of industrial civilisation as we know it." – Nafeez Ahmed, The Guardian

"A stimulating polemic that paints the ongoing drive to move away from carbon-based fossil fuels" – RenewableUK

Instead of simply explaining to the reader that there is a problem with the way the modern world produces and uses energy, he gives the reader privileged access into some of the more remarkable forums and stages around the world. Whether its at some of the most prestigious climate and energy forums in Europe, personal audiences with at least four British Prime Ministers, or private conversations with some of the more influential and powerful global energy figures, Leggett shines a light on what many think privately, and then exposes the contradiction in how they sometimes act publicly.Part of the book is optimistic, in that the author (full disclosure: I have been an acquaintance of Jeremy’s for more than a year) discusses advances in many energy-efficiency technologies, and explains that there are a number of men and women around the world who understand the problems the world faces and is trying to do something about it. But as the title indicates, Leggett also exposes the presence of a blindness among many that leaves one discouraged. One of the key analogies of the book centers around the global financial crisis of 2007-08. He explains how there were a few key analysts in the years prior to the collapse who rightly foresaw the coming crisis and tried to warn others of them. Yet there was a blindness among the masses, even among the bankers and workers in the industry. For every person warning of looming trouble, there seemed to be scores who ridiculed them, labeling as “scaremongers” any who dared challenge the notion that the housing and mortgage markets could go anywhere but up. We all know how that turned out.Today there are a similar minority of views that the energy system upon which the world economy relies is unsustainable in its current form. Leggett outlines a very rational and logical, fact-based analysis to explain why. For example, the tight-oil boom in the US has been extraordinary by any measure. Many pundits – actually most pundits – celebrate this new capability as heralding an energy “revolution” that will forever change geopolitics, resulting in an energy-independent America. The facts say differently (at least for those actually willing to examine the comprehensive data). Yet as in the days prior to the banking collapse, any who dare challenge the status quo are similarly derided as “scaremongers.” Yet also like the days ahead of the banking collapse, Leggett’s arguments are based on sound evidence and reason. All the news isn’t bad, however, as he believes a renaissance is possible. Just as in the period after the banking crisis, officials were open to making changes when they weren’t before, so too does Leggett believe similar openings may occur after it becomes evident there is an energy problem. We had better hope he is right. When the banking collapse occurred it hit a great many people hard, but entire segments of the economy and public were shielded to a large degree. When there isn’t enough affordable oil to satisfy global needs and prices rise to unaffordable levels, it will impact the entire society. When the banking crisis was exposed, governments around the world simply printed more money to relieve the problem. When the oil crisis is exposed, no one can ‘print’ new oil.The damage will be more acute, longer lasting, and more difficult to overcome (as virtually all aspects of the modern economy rely not merely on sufficient quantities of oil, but on sufficient quantities of affordable oil). All the more reason to read this book and encourage leaders and officials in this and other countries to begin taking the matter more seriously before the onset of crisis manifests itself and the world enters a crisis-management phase.

The Energy of Nations:Risk Blindness and the Road to Renaissance By Jim M Leggett is a former oil executive, teacher, founder of the successful Solarcentury company, and chair of the influential financial think tank Carbon Tracker. He contributes to the Financial Times, The Guardian, and is a Fellow at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute. His book about energy, climate change and finance is well documented and brilliantly written. How can a science guy be such a good writer too? Over the past five years, I have followed many of the stories Leggett presented but it was fascinating to read about his "first hand" experience in dealing with some of the key characters. This is a great book for anyone interested in learning more about energy, climate change and their related financial risks as well as our opportunities to change course and build a more resilient and sustainable society.

By Todd Allyn Flach The timeliness of the topics of this book is spot on, the analysis and evidence are compelling, and the narrative is entertaining. I just wanted even more material on how to win the war against "business as usual" and yet another economic bubble threatening to blow us all up.

Best Ebook Online The Problem of Space Travel: The Rocket MotorBy Hermann Noordung, Herman Potocnik Potocnik

This is an English translation of Noordung's 'Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums'. It is a part of the NASA History Series. The book provides Noordung's insight as to how a space station might be constructed. Hermann Noordung's Das Problem der Bejahrung des Weltraums, published here in English translation, was one of the classic writings about spaceflight. Its author, whose real name was Herman Potocnik, was an captain in the Austrian army who became an engineer. He was born on 22 December 1892 in Pola, the chief Austro-Hungarian naval station, located on the Adriatic in what is today Croatia. After engineering school he did become interested in the spaceflight movement. He corresponded with Hermann Oberth (1894-1989), whose book Die Rakele zu den Planetenraurnen (The Rocket into Interplanetary Space, 1923) essentially launched the spaceflight movement in Germany and laid the theoretical foundations for future space efforts there. Oberth encouraged Potocnik to express his ideas about rocketry and space travel in a book, which he completed with its 100 illustrations in 1928. Potocnik's gratitude to Oberth and the enthusiasts around him in Germany led the still young but ailing engineer to assume the pen name of Noordung (referring to the German word for north, Nord) in honor of the fellow space enthusiasts to his north. He published the book with Richard Carl Schmidt & Co. in Berlin in 1929, only to die soon afterwards in 1929 of tuberculosis. Potocnik's book dealt, as its title suggests, with a broad range of topics relating to space travel, although the rocket motor that forms the book's subtitle was not especially prominent among them. What makes the book important in the early literature about space travel is its extensive treatment of the engineering aspects of a space station. Potocnik was hardly the first person to write about this subject. The idea in fictional form dates back to 1869-1870 when American minister and writer Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) published "The Brick Moon" serially in The Atlantic Monthly. The German mathematics teacher, philosopher, and historian of science Kurd Lafsswitz (1848-1910) followed this up in 1897 with his novel Auf zwei Planeten (translated into English as "Two Planets" in 1971), which featured a Martian space station supported by antigravity. Space historians have suggested that Potocnik's book formed the basis for a plotless short story entitled "Lunetta" that Wernher von Braun wrote in 1929, describing a trip to a space station. If correct, this hypothesis would suggest an important link in the evolution about ideas for a space station. As is well known, von Braun - technical director of the German rocket development center at Peenemttnde that developed the V-2 ballistic missile during World War II and later director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center while it developed the Saturn V rocket - wrote an article for the popular Collier's magazine in 1952 in which he described a space station at least superficially similar to Potocnik's. This article, others in the eight-part Collier's series of which it was a part, and a Walt Disney television series, Man in Space, in which von Braun, Ley, and others appeared, helped establish the American popular image of a space station and of space exploration as well as a vision of a space station that, in Howard McCurdy's words, "would continue to guide NASA strategy through the decades ahead." As McCurdy also stated, "More than any other person, von Braun would be responsible for clarifying in the American mind the relationship between space stations and space exploration. " Thus, if Potocnik indeed influenced von Braun, through the latter he must also have influenced the United States and NASA. 168 pages; over one hundred photos drawings, illustrations and charts. Many years later, it was translated into English and published by NASA in 1995. Its NASA designation is NASA SP-4026. Some readers may find this book very difficult to read, since it contains engineering formulae and assumes the reader knows some basic scientific principles. Furthermore, all the figures are labeled in German and only contain English translations in the Figure title blocks. While the title of the book indicates that it focuses on the rocket engine, only a modest portion of the book actually deals with the rocket motor and most of the book is dedicated to presenting the current knowledge and theories (in 1929) on space travel. The book opens with discussing gravitational attraction and the difficulty in escaping Earth's gravity field. The book then leads into the physics of the rocket motor and different types of the launch vehicle configurations, such as balloon assisted launches, rocket planes and multi-stage rockets. After these opening sections, the books contains numerous paragraphs on space based research and construction. For example, the author examines space station, the potential effect of weightlessness on the human body, space science, airlock designs, solar power and many other topics that are still being debated today. Even spaced based weapon designs were shown. As a technical person, I found this book to be very interesting. I was amazed so see that many of the problems associated with space travel were addressed and conceptual designs were presented in the 1920's. Some of these concepts were ultimately incorporated into our nation's space vehicles. For example, the design for the NASA's International Space Station Airlock bears a striking resemblance to the Noordung's Space Station Airlock shown in his book. On the flip side, reentry heating was only given a very modest overview, even though this effect had proven to be one the most difficult problems to solve for the Space Shuttle. While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I feel that those readers who do not have a technical or scientific background may find this book overwhelming.

A revolutionary and much-acclaimed study of the work and motives of the Alice In Wonderland author This is the most significant biographical work on the author of Alice In Wonderland to be published in recent years, and this new edition marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Karoline Leach’s study contends that Carroll was far from being emotionally—and sexually—obsessed with female children and his "muse" Alice Liddell. She tells the strange story of how the false image of Carroll came into being and how he adored—and was adored by—women of all ages and enjoyed adult relationships that woud have scandalized the Victorian age in which he lived. The author gained access to unpublished evidence from the family archive, as well as letters and diaries, that led her to uncover Carroll’s secret passion for another member of "Alice’s" family. In The Shadow of The Dreamchild is a radical re-evaluation of the life and work of one of England’s most mysterious literary figures, and the revised edition expands on Leach’s important research.

I thought this was a third revised edition, but it's a reprint of the second revised edition. There isn't new material (which was why I rated "predictable" but only because Amazon forced me to pick something...).Regardless, I had always thought the covers for the past two editions were lacking, especially the last one. This new cover looks wonderful in comparison. It appears simple, though the font choices, the color, and the silhouette (which I believe is original though based off Tenniel) look great. I even like the feel of it better than the older paperback. My only complaint is I wish it were available in hardcover. I look forward to displaying it on my shelf. As for the content: Karoline Leach's biography was the first in Carroll research to discard myths with no evidence and only consider primary documents as facts. She also traces exactly how those myths came about. She was also first to reveal that Carroll was very much a normal man (who was not shy, who wrote mature love poetry, and who knew his friendships with grown ladies were scandalous). She even addresses the mysterious "acrobatic dress" pictures he had taken of young women, which don't survive, but he mentioned in his diaries and letters. The main and most important part of the book is the description of the Carroll Myth (how his biogaphy has been invented and manipulated). This part alone is worth the purchase. It will open your eyes and more importantly, give you framework to assess whether other Carroll information is accurate. The most common complaint I hear is of the Mrs. Liddell part because to some people, it does not seem believable. If this is why you haven't read it yet, I highly suggest trying it out anyway for the Carroll Myth information. The parts on Mrs. Liddell are presented as a theory with evidence, not as a fact.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Mary Barton is the first novel by English author Elizabeth Gaskell, published in 1848. The story is set in the English city of Manchester between 1839 and 1842, and deals with the difficulties faced by the Victorian lower class. It is subtitled 'A Tale of Manchester Life'.The novel begins in Manchester, where we are introduced to the Bartons and the Wilsons, two working-class families. John Barton is a questioner of the distribution of wealth and the relations between rich and poor. Soon his wife dies—he blames it on her grief over the disappearance of her sister Esther. Having already lost his son Tom at a young age, Barton is left to raise his daughter, Mary, alone and now falls into depression and begins to involve himself in the Chartist, trade-union movement. Mary takes up work at a dressmaker's (her father having objected to her working in a factory) and becomes subject to the affections of hard-working Jem Wilson and Harry Carson, son of a wealthy mill owner. She fondly hopes, by marrying Carson, to secure a comfortable life for herself and her father, but immediately after refusing Jem's offer of marriage she realises that she truly loves him. She therefore decides to evade Carson, planning to show her feelings to Jem in the course of time. Jem believes her decision to be final, though this does not change his feelings for her. Meanwhile, Esther, a "street-walker," returns to warn John Barton that he must save Mary from becoming like her. He simply pushes her away, however, and she's sent to jail for a month on the charge of vagrancy. Upon her release she talks to Jem with the same purpose. He promises that he will protect Mary and confronts Carson, eventually entering into a fight with him, which is witnessed by a policeman passing by. During the trial, Jem learns of Mary's great love for him. Will arrives in court to testify, and Jem is found 'not guilty'. Mary has fallen ill during the trial and is nursed by Mr Sturgis, an old sailor, and his wife. When she finally returns to Manchester she has to face her father, who is crushed by his remorse. He summons John Carson, Harry's father, to confess to him that he is the murderer. Carson is still set on justice, but after turning to the Bible he forgives Barton, who dies soon afterwards in Carson's arms. Not long after this Esther comes back to Mary's home, where she, too, soon dies. Jem decides to leave England, where, his reputation damaged, it would be difficult for him to find a new job. The novel ends with the wedded Mary and Jem, their little child, and Mrs Wilson living happily in Canada. News comes that Margaret has regained her sight and that she and Will, soon to be married, will visit.

Mary Barton: Color Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers (Unabridged Version)By Elizabeth Gaskell

Review This is Elizabeth Gaskell at her best, and Shirley Foster's edition is both sagacious and formally accurate. The appendices are invaluable and the explanatory notes are relevant without being obtrusive. A must for readers of Mary Barton. Dr. Antonio Ballesteros-Gonzalez, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha

Review "Another splendid edition from Broadview with the usual high standard of helpful footnotes. Among the appendices in this volume are Gaskell's letters about writing the novel; contemporary reviews; essays and reports from the 1840s on industrialization, Chartism, emigration, prostitution and conditions in Manchester; brief selections from related fiction and poetry; and a very intelligible short summary of dates and events that shape the novel's politics." (Sally Mitchell )

The book explores the lives of the working class poor in Manchester, England, during the 1840s, a period of strife and hunger. The pretty, young, naive Mary Barton persues a romance with handsome, dashing Harry Carson, son the mill owner, while spurning the attentions of her childhood friend, Jem Wilson, who loves her passionately. Mary's intentions, however, are less than noble; while certainly attracted to Harry, she wishes to improve the lot of herself and her father, John, who, disconsolate over the loss of his wife and only son and the attendant poverty after the loss of his job, has slipped into a daze of opium and seeks vengeance against the Carsons for putting him into this position. This eventually leads to tragedy and redemption. Gaskell writes as if her life depended on it; she describes the horrible conditions of the Manchester poor with searing vision, and makes the influence of radicalism completely understandable, even if she doesn't always agree with it. The delineation of character is quite remarkable; one's heart beats faster as Mary realises who it is she really loves and particularly when she is forced to protect, against incredible odds, both of the men that truly love her. Admittedly, the second half of the book, detailing the murder and subsequent trial, is quite melodramatic, but it's grippingly told. A magnificent work that should be required reading.

Seong Actually I read this book in three days' time (it can be even faster if I don't have to go to school). Anyway, Mrs. Gaskell's depiction of the working class people in Manchester during the 19th century was so vivid that you can just *see* and *feel* how the rich and the poor's lives were like back then by turning the pages. I believe no one who had read this book will not to some extent feel pity for the tragic hero, John Barton, in the story. But aside from this formal social theme being presented in the novel, there is also a very strong sense of religious/moral theme in it (espeically near the end of the story), as well as some drama and romance in it. Definitely worth a read, especially to those who are interested in Victorian Literature.

Mary Barton is one of the premier novels of this genre detailing the lives of ordinary working class poor in Manchester during the height of the industrial revolution. Mrs. Gaskell lived in Manchester and writes about what she saw with a keen eye and understanding of the workers' plight. If you're looking for bodice-ripping buy something else. If you want a picture of life in England circa 1840 that isn't Dickens, try Mary Barton.
