This quiz book includes books, movies, television shows, and games in different difficulty levels. Almost every cult classic has at least one question. The question types mix true or false, multiple choice, and open-ended questions. What can I say, it's fun. Geeky, but fun. This book would be great for trivia night. I suggest the print copy so you can flip back and forth easily from the quizzes to the answers.Net Galley Feedback

Rated 4.25 of 5Just in time for the holidays comes this great stocking-stuffer for that know-it-all geek in your life (if you can't think who that would be, it's probably you). The Science Fiction and Fantasy Quiz Book is just that. A book full of trivia in the form of quiz's. There are no frills to this book; no essays on topics covered. There are a few scattered black and white drawings of sci-fi/fantasy figures, though nothing obvious (no trademark infringements here!). The drawings are fine - not outstanding but not cheesy amateur work, either. The purpose of this book is not to entertain or enlighten, but to test your knowledge on all things sci-fi/fantasy.But I think it might almost work better to call it the The Geek's Quiz Book, because the book covers literature, film, television, radio, comics, and video games. I guess the modern fantasy/Sci-Fi fan needs to be much more well-rounded than those of us from a different age.I went through all the questions in the book and found that I did, not surprisingly, quite well with the questions pertaining to authors and books. I did moderately well with film, television, and radio questions, and really really poorly with anything having to do with anime or video games. The quizzes are broken down to three different segments, Easy, Medium, and Hard. Each quiz appears to be about ten questions in length and they are in a variety of formats: multiple choice, true or false, short answer, and match-up. For the most part, I thought author Joseph McCullough did a fine job of placing the questions in the right categories (easy, medium, hard), though I did highlight two questions ("In what city would you find Arkham Asylum?" and "What famous puppeteer animated and provided the voice for Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back?"). Both of these are listed in the "hard" category, which I question. Given that these are written for sci-fi fans, these seem pretty easy. But two questions out of 104 quizzes seems like a pretty good record.I can imagine that it's difficult to put together a quiz book like this, to get the right amount of variety to really test the modern fan. Although I wasn't interested in anything to do with a few subjects, I understand their place in the book. I did, though, think for a while that there were too many questions regarding The Lord of the Rings books and films (particularly, I think, in the Easy and Medium sections). I'm certainly not opposed to these, I just thought we could do with fewer of these in order to have a better variety. This isn't the sort of book you would typically buy for yourself, but it would make a great gift for anyone who thinks that they know a lot of sci-fi trivia.Looking for a good book? The Science Fiction and Fantasy Quiz Book is a nice assortment of trivia to test your knowledge of modern science fiction and fantasy and would make a terrific gift.I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Exactly as the title states, and that's a good thing By Paul Books, movies, TV shows, video games, comic books, and others I have no idea about are all included here. There’s such a wide variety of genres—I knew a lot more science fiction than fantasy, for example—that there’s no possible way anyone should be near perfect (and if you are, go take a walk or see a football game). I don’t watch Game of Thrones, so I didn’t even attempt the “match character to actor” game; same with Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Lost. There are three levels: easy, medium, hard. On the first two quizzes I got 9/10, then a perfect 10 on the third. By the sixth things were getting harder, and by the tenth my average had fallen to 7/10. At 20 quizzes I was at 62%, still in the easy section, kinda my last hurrah. The thing that most struck me was how good I felt when I got one right that I wasn’t anticipating getting right, like when I got a perfect score for Star Trek species. At times it was positively addicting; “Just one more and then I’ll go sleep, promise. . .” though considering some of my scores, I shoulda left it till morning. So my final score was 434 out of 1040. I find myself simultaneously annoyed and relieved that it wasn’t higher.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Obscure Regional Playwrights By Robert S. Robbins This book provides a great introduction to playwrights based in Philadelphia. It can also serve as a guide to the movers and shakers on the Philadelphia theater scene. Although I have thoroughly researched Philadelphia theaters, I was unfamiliar with these playwrights. I have not read or seen any plays written by a single one of them. How can I explain this oversight? Unfortunately very few of their plays have been published. And their plays certainly aren't being produced elsewhere in Pennsylvania. I think regional playwrights exist in a bubble. Their fame does not reach beyond their region. It is discouraging to encounter the work of great writers, mildly successful playwrights, which will somehow escape the attention of even the most avid theater enthusiast. Without an anthology of the plays mentioned in the course of the interviews, this book alone cannot promote the work of Philadelphia's playwrights.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Umbrella book for Environmental Physics By Michael H. Wofsey This is a fairly new book, and I'm sure there will be complaints about this or that. For instance Smith just touches on the physics equations that govern the processes she explains. But I don't look at this book as a end-source, but essentially as a large "table of contents" for the field of environmental physics.Smith covers each area, energy, pollution, climatology, and others with an introduction, and then she links each area to fundamental constraints. When I find an area that interests me further, then I head to Jackson, or Pathria, or whatever to get the greater detail. But what is most important about this book is that Smith maintains her role as a scientist. She doesn't editorialize environmental issues, she simply presents the facts. And she has a depth of knowledge that astounds me. For instance she knew to cover restrictive fluid dynamics in ocean transport ... this is a critical area for cargo ships, yet generally not known to anyone but marine architects.Smith brings the key component of environmental physics to the table in the opening pages. She astutely points out that physics is the most 'reductionist' of the sciences, where physicists reduce systems to the simplest components for analysis. Unfortunately, this approach can only be half useful for environmental systems, where the whole needs to always be kept in view. This book brings the whole into view. When the physicists need the details they can then move into the huge structure of conventional physics literature. For anyone who considers themselves an environmentalist, or an earth physicist, this book is important to read. I found my copy in the library, but I'm probably going to buy a copy to put in my personal reference library because I hope to work in this area when I'm done with my research work.

Keyer I am teaching a high school level course called "Introduction to Environmental Physics" and this is the best text available for this class - while it is not detailed enough for a college course, it covers enough subjects well for an introductory course!

America's favorite auto mechanics share reminiscences, rants, and hate mail in another time-wasting yet genuinely useful collection of highlights from their long-running radio show.

So one day the guys were at a restaurant enjoying a cake someone delivered to their table. On their way out, they realized their mistake: It wasn't their cake after all. It was Grammy's birthday cake, bound for a party at a nearby table. They apologized later on the air.

Tom and Ray lead colorful (not to mention grimy) lives, and each week they share the hilarity with millions of radio listeners. Their latest collection will delight diehard fans and anyone who cares about cars and good humor. Along with the usual dose of belly laughs, it includes Tommy's memories of his misadventures in the US Army, stories from the guys about their beloved pal, Vito, and the debut performance of the Click and Clack Barbershop Quartet Minus Two singing "Goodbye My Coney Island Baby". That the debut was also the farewell performance is no coincidence.

Best Ebook PDF Car Talk: 25 Years of Lousy Car AdviceBy Tom Magliozzi, Ray Magliozzi

In 1987, Tom and Ray Magliozzi, also known as Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers, made the leap from nursing the motley car population of New England to creating the nationally beloved public radio phenomenon that we all know as Car Talk. The advice may be a little suspect, and the memories in desperate need of a tune-up, but the laughs are genuine as Click and Clack look back on an illustrious - if not industrious - 25 years of delighting NPR audiences with their wit, wisdom, and occasionally relevant musings on the maintenance of cars. Lovingly compiled by the long-suffering lackeys at Car Talk Plaza, this collection represents the most memorable, most hilarious moments from the show's vast archives.

It is a mix of radio call in's, newsy items, and just the wonderful banter of "Click and Clack". It is such a pleasure to listen to such quick-witted replies.

Know nothing about them!), you will love Car Talk. The Tappet brothers are so funny as they respond to calls about cars which always lead to hilarious conversations about relationships and life in general. This is an excellent program! It is smart, warm and so funny! No wonder it was on NPR for so many years! You will laugh out loud!

Harry Potter for Nerds II Occupy Hogwarts! Do you see the revolutionary potential of Harry Potter? Where would you stand in the Battle of Hogwarts? Readers who appreciate J.K. Rowling's messages about political and social repression, and about the empowering qualities of empathy, invisibility, and transformative love, will discover inspiration in the latest compilation of essays from editors Kathryn N. McDaniel and Travis Prinzi. Fans of the first Harry Potter for Nerds will find this second volume packed with literary studies of favorite characters, like Remus Lupin, Dobby, Nearly Headless Nick, and the Weasley Twins. And they will also encounter political, economic, and philosophical analyses that explore the problems of our world and point to Rowling's belief in the "power of the powerless" when it comes to solving them. From Squibs to house-elves, from ghosts to young wizards-in-training and even wands and Snitches, the authors in this volume find power in unexpected places. Most of all, they demonstrate the power of expert readers to apply fantasy to the real world in ways that liberate, delight, and inspire.

New Insights and the Old Magic By Jenna St. Hilaire If you're into academic writing on Harry Potter, you're not likely to find a stronger or more enjoyable collection. It includes a wide variety of essays, ranging from thick and scholarly to warm-hearted and fun. Highlights:-a revised and updated version of Kathryn McDaniel's "The Elfin Mystique," which is a feminist take on house-elves that I had personally been meaning to track down and read for years-beautiful character essays on Lupin and the Weasley twins-Hayley and Michael Burson's nostalgic "Surviving the Potter-pocalypse," for those of us who miss our daily dose of fandom a little too much-intriguing thought pieces on Kendra Dumbledore and Native American heritage, Dumbledore's Army and the White Rose Society, and John Locke and the Order of the Phoenix-and a variety of keen insights throughout, more than I can mention. To be fair, I'm right square in the middle of the target audience, and yes, I mean nerd (disclosure: I wrote for the first one [which is also worth a read, in my opinion ;)], and in internet terms I know several of these writers.) But for all the academic reading I've done on the subject of Harry Potter, I found this collection had an impressive amount of new things to say to me. When you're reading along about family ties and you catch your breath because you never saw the force of Arabella Figg's love for Harry before, well--for me, that was a trace of the old magic. Now I want to revisit several of these essays and then read the entire Potter series again ...

Brings issues explored by Rowling right into modern and historical context By Amazon Customer This collection of essays is great for anyone who loves J.K. Rowling's fantastic achievement. It really highlights how scholars such as historians and political scientists use their insight and techniques to reveal dimensions of our own society by delving into Rowling's complex and deep portrayal of characters through their epic struggle. The numerous authors of the individual chapters have a variety of topics, viewpoints, and writing styles, but it all holds together very well. I especially like the update on the house elves cast in the light of The Real Housewives as well as the work on the White Rose Society. It's really cool how these articles explore the power of the powerless and relate them to real world issues that are historical as well as current. Some of the extras, such as the video extras and webinairs are simple, but such good discussions, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat and listening more than once.

Almost all of them that are not Bloomsbury or Scholastic copies of the seven books are guides to how to best understand JKR's sc By Amazon Customer 5 StarsBig Ideas about Potter In Accessible Language = Pleasure to ReadI have a decent sized collection of Harry Potter books. Almost all of them that are not Bloomsbury or Scholastic copies of the seven books are guides to how to best understand JKR's schoolboy stories. A fair number of these are anthologies of academic essays written for other scholars and egghead fans. The best of the lot so far have been the two gathered by Travis Prinzi: Hogshead Conversations and Harry Potter For Nerds 1. Prinzi, unlike the usual editor of such collections, prefers big ideas and bold arguments written in language and paragraphs aimed at clarity and access rather than in the usual professorial class jargon. The combination of courage and plain speech is my strong preference.Harry Potter For Nerds 2, edited by Kathryn McDaniel and Prinzi this time, has the virtues of its predecessor and the added value of being up to date, even topical. The chapters on the twins, Quidditch, ghosts, Squibs, and House-elves were wonderfully out there and well argued; the second section's pieces on veracity and work in Harry Potter and its discussions of historical background (Native America, White Rose Society) and genre expanded my thinking on Rowling's characters and stories. That's all I ask from an essay collection like this. I'm also happy when the physical book itself is attractive and formatted so that it is a pleasure to read, which this one is. I look forward already to 'For Nerds 3.'

Great backround of todays technology By Girlieeee This is a book in a larger series of books called “Lightning Guides” in which each book explores a different complex topic. This book is about the history of technology and the leaps and bounds that were made through the years and the people behind them to make the world what it is today. Some of the interesting topics and people that are highlighted in the book are morse code, radio frequencies, the Wright brothers, Apple, and Mark Zuckerberg. This is a very insightful book that can be picked up like a magazine to enjoy a short article or two, or you can sit down and read the entire book in a couple of days. I like the format and the size (it's smaller than a typical paperback), and that it's easy reading with some great background of the topic. *I received a sample of this item in return for an honest and unbiased review*

I think this book has a lot of great snippets of different people By Amanda H I thought this was a really interesting book on the advancement of technology, and those behind each idea. I am a homeschooling mother of 9, and I think this book has a lot of great snippets of different people. It gives a short breakdown of different technological feats and the man or woman behind them. I found it hard to just read through as a book, but it would be a great book to use as a starter for further studies. I plan on using this for study assignments for my children to read, and then find more information on that specific person. This book goes from the light bulb, to the cotton gin, and up to Google and Apple.I received this book free in exchange for my review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. WOW! Better than I thought! By Melodie This is actually a fantastic book that explores technology inventors from the last 100 years. There is so much information in this book that it is almost overwhelming. But the stories or descriptions of each of these inventors is fascinating and there are little-known facts in each of the individual biography’s. If you are a history buff, IT person or just someone who is looking to catch up on the last 100 years of innovation, this is a quick and easy read. Pictures and text are well done and the overall layout of the book is easy to interpret and digest.

It has long been recognized that J. R. R. Tolkien's work is animated by a profound moral and religious vision. It is less clear that Tolkien's vision confronts the leading philosophical and literary concerns addressed by modern writers and thinkers. This book seeks to resolve such uncertainty. It places modern writers and modern quandaries in lively engagement with the broad range of Tolkien's work, while giving special attention to the textual particularities of his masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. In ways at once provocative and original, the contributors deal with major modern artists and philosophers, including Miguel de Cervantes, Friedrich Nietzsche, Emmanuel Levinas, Iris Murdoch, and James Joyce. The essays in Tolkien among the Moderns also point forward to postmodernism by examining its implications for Tolkien's work. Looking backward, they show how Tolkien addresses two ancient questions: the problems of fate and freedom in a seemingly random universe, as well as Plato's objection that art can neither depict truth nor underwrite morality. The volume is premised on the firm conviction that Tolkien is not a writer who will be soon surpassed and forgotten—exactly because he has a permanent dwelling place "among the moderns." "This collection of essays places Tolkien in the context of the big themes of philosophy, historically and today. It will speak to readers who are already drawn to the work of Tolkien and who either have a desire to see into his work more deeply or desire to see how his work might be employed to think about other matters, for example, how might the work of Tolkien impact the so-called warfare between poetry and philosophy. I believe that the work of Tolkien is here to stay, that it will continue to stand the test of time, and that intelligent, curious readers will find Tolkien among the Moderns deeply rewarding." —Charles Taliaferro, St. Olaf College

Excerpt from A Working Manual of High Frequency CurrentsThe literature on High Frequency Currents is not extensive and much of it is too technical for the average physician, who is more interested in the application of these currents than he is in the precise manner in which they are generated. For this reason I have given comparatively little space to the consideration of the various forms of apparatus, other than to outline the types upon one or another of which all of the machines are based.Further information along this line is properly within the sphere of the various manufacturers. My intention has been to make this a practical hand-book for the busy physician who wishes to use high frequency currents and to learn how to do so with as little "red tape" as possible.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ronnie Reagan's bizarre legs are sufficient reason to watch John Loves Mary (1949), a picture so ordinaire it needs this bizarre touch. When the faces in this historic still from the Museum of Modern Art are cropped, Reagan could pass for a butch lez from the Women's Army Corps who is about to put the old make on a fluff (Patricia Neal). -- from Cruising the Movies

Cruising the Movies was Boyd McDonald's "sexual guide" to televised cinema, originally published by the Gay Presses of New York in 1985. The capstone of McDonald's prolific turn as a freelance film columnist for the magazine Christopher Street, Cruising the Movies collects the author's movie reviews of 1983--1985. This new, expanded edition also includes previously uncollected articles and a new introduction by William E. Jones.

Eschewing new theatrical releases for the "oldies" once common as cheap programing on independent television stations, and more interested in starlets and supporting players than leading actors, McDonald casts an acerbic, queer eye on the greats and not-so-greats of Hollywood's Golden Age. Writing against the bleak backdrop of Reagan-era America, McDonald never ceases to find subversive, arousing delights in the comically chaste aesthetics imposed by the censorious Motion Picture Production Code of 1930--1968.

Better known as the editor of the Straight to Hell paperback series -- a compendia of real-life sexual stories that is part pornography, part ethnography -- McDonald in his film writing reveals both his studious and sardonic sides. Many of the texts in Cruising the Movies were inspired by McDonald's attentive inspection of the now-shuttered MoMA Film Stills Archive, and his columns gloriously capture a bygone era in film fandom. Gay and subcultural, yet never reducible to a zany cult concern or mere camp, McDonald's "reviews" capture a lost art of queer cinephilia, recording a furtive obsession that once animated gay urban life. With lancing wit, Cruising celebrates gay subculture's profound embrace of mass culture, seeing film for what it is -- a screen that reflects our fantasies, desires, and dreams.

Cruising the Movies: A Sexual Guide to Oldies on TV (Semiotext(e) / Active Agents)By Boyd McDonald

Review

As my copious citations of McDonald prove, he honed a kind of cultural criticism -- personal but outward-looking, raunchy yet brainy, funny and furious -- rare in his era and barely in evidence today, when we are overrun with professional (and paraprofessional) opinionators whose writing rarely rises above plot synopses with some adjectives and adverbs thrown in.

(Bookforum)

Cruising the Movies is film writing that delivers that magic with verve, wit, and self-deprecation. It is, against all odds, a piece of film criticism that is as entertaining as the movies that it looks at, and contemporary film writers would do well to take a page from Boyd's book.

About the Author

Boyd McDonald (1925--1993) was a writer for Time and IBM, a journalist, and founder and editor of Straight to Hell, a celebrated fanzine that bore a variety of subtitles, including "The Manhattan Review of Unnatural Acts" or "The New York Review of Cocksucking."

The chapter on Nick Nolte is enough for me to buy a copy from Amazon whatever the price. And this description of Italian westerns says it all:"The main problem was probably that Italian westerns were made by cast-offs of all nations and dialogue was dubbed after filming, seemingly by any old cab driver or telephone operator who happened to be passing by the dubbing studio when a little speech was needed."The articles are mainly from Christopher Street pre 1985 by Boyd McDonald and are definitely politically incorrect and hilarious.

Excerpt from The Home Medical Library, Vol. 5The character and scope of this volume render it a most useful book for the home maker. The question of sanitation is one that closely affects the life of each individual, and many of its aspects are treated here in a lucid and comprehensive manner. Designed for wide distribution, these articles have been written to meet the needs of the dweller in the more densely populated communities, as well as those living in the less thickly settled portion of the country. In large cities the water supply is a problem that is cared for by regularly constituted sanitary authorities. Pure water is a vital necessity, but the inhabitant of a city has no need to personally concern himself with the source of supply. In the country, however, the home builder must often decide the matter for himself, and it is the aim of this book to give him the needed directions for avoiding many errors and pitfalls that abound in this direction.House construction, with its intricate problems, is also a more serious matter for the country dweller than for his city brother. In the matter of food supply, the inhabitant of a country district is more fortunate.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Block and Interlocking Signals: What They Are for What They Do, How They Do It"What are we stopping for, conductor, out here in the woods? This is a limited train. What! stopped by a signal, a block signal, you say? Why, what is that? Oh, I see! You have a red blade projecting from the top of a pole to indicate to the engineer when the blade is moved up or down whether he may enter the block or not, the block being the piece of track extending to the next signal. So, then, when we are stopped by such a signal it means that another train is in the block, and we will have to wait until it has passed out."And thus it is that to-day trains are being run through towns and cities, over mountains and prairie, through bridges and tunnels, in cuts and around curves with absolute safety, a fact not fully appreciated by the traveling public, but which becomes to the engineer, whose responsibility is lightened and from whom anxiety is removed, a guiding star, telling him that the track is his and that there will be no one to dispute it with him, for such little arguments, you know, arc sometimes disastrous.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A reprint of a 1898 book By Eric in Phoenix This is a poor quality reproduction of a book published in 1898 and will only be of interest if you wish to learn about railroad signaling before then. Obviously it has no information on developements in the past hundred years.

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things.

It may be responsible for a greater improvement in human diet and longevity than any other technology of the last two thousand years-but have you ever thought seriously about your refrigerator? That box humming in the background displays more than you might expect, even who you are and the society in which you live. Jonathan Rees examines the past, present, and future of the household refrigerator with the aim of preventing its users from ever taking it for granted again. No mere container for cold Cokes and celery stalks, the refrigerator acts as a mirror-and what it reflects is chilling indeed.

Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Review

"Does life exist without refrigerators? For most of us, the answer is no. How this common kitchen appliance achieved its indispensable status in less than a century is an amazing tale filled with surprising twists and unexpected connections. Refrigerator is a delight to read. Bravo!" ―Andrew F. Smith, Editor-in-Chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America

"Allow Jonathan Rees to re-introduce you to the most underappreciated appliance in your kitchen: the refrigerator. Despite its recent and as yet patchy arrival on the world stage, the humble fridge has transformed how and what we eat, for better and for worse. This concise overview should be required reading for the 99.5 percent of Americans who own a refrigerator." ―Nicola Twilley, author of Edible Geography and contributing writer at The New Yorker

"The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic: the books take ordinary―even banal―objects and animate them with a rich history of invention, political struggle, science, and popular mythology. Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. Be warned: once you've read a few of these, you'll start walking around your house, picking up random objects, and musing aloud: 'I wonder what the story is behind this thing?'"―Steven Johnson, best-selling author of How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World

"The Object Lessons project, edited by game theory legend Ian Bogost and cultural studies academic Christopher Schaberg, commissions short essays and small, beautiful books about everyday objects from shipping containers to toast. The Atlantic hosts a collection of "mini object-lessons", brief essays that take a deeper look at things we generally only glance upon ('Is bread toast only insofar as a human toaster perceives it to be "done?" Is bread toast when it reaches some specific level of nonenzymatic browning?'). More substantive is Bloomsbury's collection of small, gorgeously designed books that delve into their subjects in much more depth." ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

About the Author Jonathan Rees is Professor of History at Colorado State University – Pueblo, USA. He is the author of four books, including of Refrigeration Nation: A History of Ice, Appliances, and Enterprise in America (2013) and Industrialization and the Transformation of American Life: A Brief Introduction (2012).

Rees shows us how our refrigerators (starting with the ice box) shape how we approach eating and how different cultural approaches to eating (across time, across countries) influence the design of this ubiquitous household item. Filled with surprising anecdotes and facts, this book will be compelling to anyone interested in how we got to how we live now.

What was it like to be Charles Dickens? His letters are the nearest we can get to a Dickens autobiography: vivid close-up snapshots of a life lived at maximum intensity. This is the first selection to be made from the magisterial twelve-volume British Academy Pilgrim Edition of his letters. From over fourteen thousand, four hundred and fifty have been cherry-picked to give readers the best essence of 'the Sparkler of Albion'. Dickens was a man with ten times the energy of ordinary mortals. There seem to have been twice the number of hours in his day, and he threw himself into letter-writing as he did into everything else. This eagerly awaited selection takes us straight to the heart of his life, to show us Dickens at first hand. Here he is writing out of the heat of the moment: as a novelist, journalist, and magazine editor; as a social campaigner and traveller in Europe and America, and as friend, lover, husband, and father. Reading and writing letters punctuated the rhythms of Dickens's day. 'I walk about brimful of letters', he told a friend. He claimed to write 'at the least, a dozen a day'. Sometimes it was a chore but more often a pleasure: an outlet for high spirits, sparkling wit, and caustic commentary - always as seen through his highly individual and acutely observing eye. Whether you dip in or read straight through, this selection of his letters creates afresh the brilliance of being Dickens, and the sheer pleasure of being in his company.

The Selected Letters of Charles DickensFrom Oxford University Press

From Booklist These 450 letters, drawn from a total of 14,000, are well chosen and annotated, but the print is very small. Dickens is not one of the great confessional correspondents. In his energetic, often hasty responses to ideas and people, projects and places, debts and death, his tone varies from chummy to fawning. He describes the genesis of his novels, creation of characters, choice of titles; his editing of periodicals and performing in amateur theatricals. He attends a public hanging: “I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits.” He writes that “invention seems the easiest thing in the world. But the difficulty of going at what I call a rapid pace is prodigious.” He exclaims that he’s breaking his heart over the death of Little Nell “and cannot bear to finish it.” A near-fatal railway accident throws him into shock: “I was in the carriage that did not go over the bridge, but which caught on one side and hung suspended over the ruined parapet.” Essential for those interested in Dickens but not riveting for the casual reader. --Jeffrey Meyers

Review Review from previous edition: "Glorious. This is a book for which readers have been waiting for a very long time. It takes you directly, in Dickens's own words, and with incomparable vividness, into his extraordinary life and mind. The notes and editorial matter deftly paint in the background to provide a detailed and constantly astonishing portrait of one of the most interesting men who ever lived." --Simon Callow"Among the dozens of Dickens publications connected with the bicentenary of the author's birth ... it is hard to imagine one more necessary than this" --Times Literary Supplement 10/02/2012"glorious letters reflecting every facet of Dickens's life; should not be missed" --The Sunday Times 12/02/2012"This is Dickens by Dickens. Whatever comes out in this bicentenary year, do not miss it." --The Sunday Times 05/02/2012"(Hartley's) selection is a miracle of compression and editorial tact" --New Statesman 06/02/2012"Dickens lovers will all be grateful to Hartley for her skill and judgement." --Literary Review 01/02/2012"Edited with unobtrusive intelligence and insight by Jenny Hartley" --The Independent 03/02/2012"a marvellous volume" --The Scotsman 18/02/2012"It's a thrilling, surprisingly fresh book." --The Evening Standard 02/02/2012"An absolute gem ... reads better than any actual novel Dickens ever wrote ... Hartley would please a great many readers by producing a second volume from the same dragon-hoard ... A typically classy Oxford affair" --Open Letters 05/2012

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Beaten with a Sledge-Hammer By Christian Schlect The sparkling letters of a great author are always well worth reading. This is especially true of Charles Dickens who was an incessant traveler, kind friend to many, and a close observer of the social issues of his age. Not to mention often funny. Here one can glean insights on writing for publication, on forms of thank you and bereavement notes, on career advice, on travel, and on direct but polite ways to say no.In these letters one often comes across the unexpected line that makes reading a joy. For example, from a letter dated November 5, 1841, "In this kind of work the object is,--not to tell everything, but to select the striking points and beat them into the page with a sledge-hammer."Those interested in obtaining a biography of Charles Dickens have many excellent options. One from last year, on his early years, that I would recommend is "Becoming Dickens" by Robert Douglas-Fairhurst.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Poorly bound book of great letters By Nancy Kopald First, no complaints about the contents. It is a joy and a privilege to read these letters. The letters are nicely laid out on the page, though the footnotes are at the end of each letter, and thus one often has to turn a page or two to refer to them. Now for the quality of the physical book. The paper is acid-free, bright white, and the print is of a nice, uniform blackness. But the quality of the paper seems to be one step above construction paper. The binding is a disgrace. It is disheartening for the future of physical books that OUP would issue a hardcover so poorly bound that it will not lie open flat on a desk. The physical quality of this book is an insult to the great writing of Charles Dickens. Finally, Ms. Hartley seems to have done an admirable job of selecting and editing the letters, but she should still have had the modesty to title the book Selected Letters, not The Selected Letters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. revealing By Russell E Shipp In Dickens novels, his favorite protagonists distinguish themselves by remaining cheerful through adversity. I thought Dickens letters would reveal if his own character mirrored that of his protagonists. Seems it does.
