It can also serve as a guide to the movers and shakers on the Philadelphia theater scene. Although I have thoroughly researched Philadelphia theaters, I was unfamiliar with these playwrights. I have not read or seen any plays written by a single one of them. How can I explain this oversight? Unfortunately very few of their plays have been published. And their plays certainly aren't being produced elsewhere in Pennsylvania. I think regional playwrights exist in a bubble. Their fame does not reach beyond their region. It is discouraging to encounter the work of great writers, mildly successful playwrights, which will somehow escape the attention of even the most avid theater enthusiast. Without an anthology of the plays mentioned in the course of the interviews, this book alone cannot promote the work of Philadelphia's playwrights.
