Excerpt from Efficient Railway OperationAfter many years of experience in railway construction, operation and administration, the author has published a series of works on those subjects, principally in relation to the successive stages of regulation of the railway system of the United States by means of legislation, both State and national. These works are largely the outcome of the author's own personal knowledge, experience and research, and reference is herein made to them, in some cases, where the same matters have been discussed at greater length in the former volumes. It is the aim of the present work to describe the progressive development of efficiency in the operation of the railway system of the United States, as compared with similar progress in other countries. It has been prepared at the suggestion of many persons who have inquired for authoritative works on the subject, that would be of value especially to students in technical schools and to junior railroad employees, as well as of interest to the general reader. With this two-fold object in view, there have been added, in appendices, very complete tables of statistics and much strictly technical information, drawn from official sources. Reference to authorities and explanations of terms have been given in footnotes. The work is devoted to operation, as distinguished from administration. It deals with facts, and not with opinions ; therefore, it does not discuss matters of finance, or rates or labor questions. The author desires to acknowledge the valued assistance of railroad officials and friends in bringing the information down to the present year, and for much that is included in the chapter on the use of railroads in war-time. In the revision of technical matter, preparation of index and addenda, correction of proofs and general supervision of the work through the press, he has had the aid of Charles A. Hammond, C. Camargo If you are looking for a book that explains the basic of the rail engineering, this is a good choice, since some things didn't change since it's first publication. If you already know something about railways, go for a newer book, you'll be better settled. If you are an enthusiast of rails, this book can give you a good look of the "railroad world" a century ago.

An absorbing selection of Walter Benjamin’s personal manuscripts, images, and documents The work of the great literary and cultural critic Walter Benjamin is an audacious plotting of history, art, and thought; a reservoir of texts, commentaries, scraps, and fragments of everyday life, art, and dreams. Throughout his life, Benjamin gathered together all kinds of artifacts, assortments of images, texts, and signs, themselves representing experiences, ideas, and hopes, each of which was enthusiastically logged, systematized, and analyzed by their author. In this way, Benjamin laid the groundwork for the salvaging of his own legacy. Intricate and intimate, Walter Benjamin’s Archive leads readers to the heart of his intellectual world, yielding a rich and detailed portrait of its author.

Review “Esther Leslie’s translation reveals that no thought should go un-noted” —Peter Conrad, Guardian “This Archive is an object to treasure and has the aura of a reliquary, but Benjamin is no saint. Hidden within this small selection is a profaning giant whom we are only beginning to see.” —Independent“Enchanting.”—Times Literary Supplement “The most important German aesthetician and literary critic of the twentieth century.” —George Steiner “Elegantly brings together the materials of Benjamin’s bequest and reminds us of what his friend Theodor Adorno rightly said was its greatest significance for subsequent thinking.” —Frieze“Charming and beautifully produced.” —Ray Monk, New Statesman

Porges It's always wonderful to look into a book or magazine that consists largely of photographs of pages from other books, partly because nothing photographs better, and partly because you are seeing the page in something both like and unlike its native habitat, like an animal in the better kind of zoo.Because the texts are presented this way, as photographs of autographs (notebooks, postcards, trial drafts of essays, collected photographs with notations), the distance between reader and author is inescapable. Often, when we see a famous text (sometimes,e.g when it's newly translated into contemporary language), we will remark on how contemporary the story feels, how the writer, long dead, feels like someone you know or could know. But with pages like these, the patina of time is present, and so is all of the strangeness of the writer, as much as is left. There's nothing like a trip to the archives to get your bearings relative to a writer; to locate him/her in time, and to feel the presence of time, both as the writer felt it in gathering these scraps together, and as you feel it now.My favorite image from Benjamin's writing is the Angel of History, who is pinned in the air, blown back and upright by a wind from Paradise (from the Beginning), while all the garbage of every passing moment piles up at her feet. Something like a librarian. Being the angel of history makes movement difficult if not impossible, even when you have to leave Germany to save your life. You can read about that, but it's wonderful to have a chance to see pages from those books. If you're a Benjamin completionist, you will need to buy this book, but even if all you've read are the essays in Arendt's little collection, you will enjoy the added sense of the presence and loss of their author, just the same.

On the other hand, if you are like me---who has never read Mr. Benjamin's works ---then it won't be such a useful purchase.Without a flowing textual narrative, this book provides detailed examples of the scraps and notes kept by Mr. Benjamin, who was a compulsive hoarder of all mundane things tied to his highly intellectual pursuits during most of the first half of the last century

A gorgeously illustrated history of the literary, film, and arts counterculture--now in paperback!

Simultaneously a literary movement, ultra-hip subculture, and burgeoning cottage industry, steampunk is the most influential new genre to emerge from the late twentieth century. Spinning tales populated with clockwork leviathans, cannon shots to the moon, and coal-fired robots, it charts alternative histories in which the British Empire never fell and the atom remained unsplit.

Spectacularly illustrated and international in scope, this comprehensive history explores steampunk's many intricate expressions in fiction, cinema, television, comics, and video games, and traces its evolution into a truly global aesthetic that has made its mark on art, architecture, fashion, and music.

From the classic science-fiction of Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, and Mary Shelley, through the dystopian futurescapes of Cyberpunk, to the otherworldly imaginings of Hayao Miyazaki, Alan Moore, and China Miéville, author Brian J. Robb sets the key works of steampunk squarely under the lens of his brass monocle and ventures into a world where airships still rule the skies.

Review “Together with Voyager Press, Robb has crafted a book that does credit to its subject matter: a punked up history, a hybrid of seriousness and playfulness in the format of an olde worlde postmodern book” - ScienceFictionWorld.com “Anyone wondering where that stuff came from – and, really, anyone with less than a Ph.D in Steampunk – will profit from reading this new coffee-table tome by Brian J. Robb, recently published by Voyageur Press” - AustinChronicle.com“Aesthetically, this book is absolutely gorgeous. It’s impressive - roughly 9-1/2″ x 11″ and heavy, with a beautiful cover, nice heavy coated pages that are full color and look tea-stained and otherwise “aged,” loaded with beautiful photos on every page….Whether you’re a goggles-and-gear-wearing devotee of steampunk or are simply curious, this beautiful book belongs in your library.” - SciFiMafia.com“There’s been a number of new steampunk-related fiction books released lately that I’m going to be reading over the holidays, but I do love a good non-fiction Steampunk book and one was recently delivered into my hands from the folks at Voyageur Press. And it is beautiful!” - Wired.com“This is the coffee table book for when you want an illustrated encyclopedia covering the history of steampunk, namechecking important inventors and artists, and pointing out books and movies that may be of interest to steampunk fans.” - Gamma Squad

Mcdonald This is certainly a rather well presented, sumptuous volume easily suited to the coffee table; I do, however have a few minor issues with it.Firstly; if you already own a copy of "The Steampunk Bible" several of the images in that book re-appear here; that's fairly unavoidable give the iconic status some book-jacket covers have taken on, though some of the costume photos and film-stills could have been more varied and better identified; I also think that publication still gives the more rounded account and overview of the genre to date. This volume does, however, make a very good companion to the "Bible" and is in an impressively larger format.Robb's book provides an excellent in-depth, authoritative exploration of the literary element of the genre, its origins and antecedents, key works, authors, themes, etc., he also goes into detail with subjects such as graphic novels, the Japanese scene, music - all the diverse elements that come under the Steampunk heading - the only unsatisfactory topic for me is in the definition of what constitutes Steampunk influence in film, TV and video games, which at times can be a little tenuous; this arises from the basic problem that there has yet to be a truly defining Steampunk drama, a successful, iconic movie or series aficionados can unanimously agree on.That's hardly the fault of the author though and other Steampunk books deal with this territory with much the same inconclusive outcomes. A useful quotation from Abney Park's lead singer is illuminating; "We've had Steampunk movies for as long as we've had movies...It`s just been recently given a name."In summation then, this is a well-illustrated book with a good informative text, the strongest points being those dealing with the literary and graphic novel side of the genre; if you don`t already own any book on the subject it's a good starting point, its nice to look through, though it lacks the compendium feel of the "Bible" which encouraged "dipping into" more readily. It`s a very good addition to the growing number of volumes on Steampunk.

Beautiful Book By Kay Hudson I bought this book in hopes that it would have more material on Steampunk literature than The Steampunk Bible (another beautifully illustrated book) does, and that proved to be the case. The author goes all the way back to Poe for influences, and includes what for me was a guided tour of many books I'd read long ago (from Burroughs to Moorcock to Blaylock), as well as several favorite movies (especially the Time Machine) and TV shows (The Wild Wild West). Most of the book is, in fact, about "Fantastical Fiction and Fanciful Film," exactly what I was looking for.My only complaint, and it just isn't enough to lose a star over, is the lack of an index, a flaw which may not concern many readers. All in all a gorgeous, and very informative, book, which has added a number of books to read and movies to watch to my lists.

It's a guide to the slightly off world of steampunk, where the reality we know is just a bit "different." This is a great guide to a world, a subculture, perhaps the last bastion of some of the most talented, imaginative, and creative people on the planet. A great read!

William A. Cook's Age of Fools is an attempt to relocate our society where it belongs. It is an injection of intense humanism, a celebration of creative thinking that encourages creative reading. - Gilad Atzmon, Israeli-born British Jazz Artist, Author & popular Critical Analyst of Mid-East and Global Affairs Bill Cook is the Barbara Tuchman of our time. This is a courageous book, not the brawny courage of the warrior, but the deeper courage of the peacemaker and the eloquent courage of the truth-teller, who speaks of things many would rather not hear, even though their very future may depend upon it. - Jeffrey St. Clair, Editor, CounterPunch Writes Cook: "From the opening volley of Neo-Con unelected, self-appointed manifestos to take control, to the lies they told the American people through their representatives, to the failure to seek the truth about what took place on 9/11, I have witnessed a cold-blooded group of arrogant men systematically emasculate the rights of the American citizen. What America was in its birthing, it is no longer." Labeling this era "Age of Fools" in the tradition of 15th century Sebastian Brant's "Ship of Fools" and embellishing his work with artwork by Edward Beardsley, Cook writes: "How ironic that the self-proclaimed righteous, the born again Christian Zionists and the Jewish Zionists wheedle their way into their respective governments, preaching the Devil's agenda, using superstition, deception and hypocrisy. In the process they destroy the true and permanent tenets of Christianity and the founding principles of Democracy. America, in short, mirrors the arrogance of the Israeli state under... right-wing Zionist groups that constitute its government... With Israel, driven by its god of war, we are the twin demons of destruction that live in constant fear of all peoples who would rather die than be subjugated, exploited, or oppressed."

Cook (author, activist, poet and professor of English at the University of La Verne, California) should be read by everyone as a brilliant and passionate condemnation of the continuing US Alliance atrocities in the Muslim world. “Age of Fools” employs poetry, polemical prose and European literary traditions to excoriate the horrendous Bush America and Israeli crimes of the first decade of the 21st century in Iraq and Palestine, respectively - atrocities that are continuing today. In the face of immense human suffering in Iraq and Palestine, a dispassionate, statistical and legalistic approach is insufficient to describe the gut-wrenching awfulness and we also need art, music, poetry, passionate prose, and indeed neologisms (new words) and this poetical and polemical approach is used with unrelenting, compelling force by William Cook in “Age of Fools”. Thus, for example, he coins the term “demonocracy” to describe Israel and its crimes against the Palestinians.William Cook draws upon the European literary tradition that notably in the English-speaking world includes the King James version of the Holy Bible. Indeed William Cook frequently alludes to or quotes from the Holy Bible, and his own poetry in the book has the same apocalyptic tone found with the prophets of the Old Testament and in the Book of Revelations of the New Testament. Indeed, the lengthy subtitle of the book sets the tone and summarizes the thrust of the book thus: “The Bush/Obama administrations, driven by the twin horses of the Apocalypse, the Evangelical Christian Zionists and the Neo-Con Zealots, pulls America ever closer to the brink of disaster by wielding whips of righteous prophecy and self-serving lies”. William Cook’s “Age of Fools” is illustrated by appropriately sinister, Kafka-esque images by Edward Beardsley and is a powerful book to rattle consciences in the rich, comfortable West that have been blunted by decades of Mainstream media, politician , academic and lobbyist censorship, lying by omission and lying by commission. William Cook makes the powerful suggestion of 30 December as a Day of Lamentation. Peace is the only way but silence kills and silence is complicity.

Excerpt from American Rural HighwaysAmerican Rural Highways was written for use as a text or reference in courses dealing with rural highways and intended for agricultural engineers, students in agriculture and for short courses and extension courses. The reader is assumed to have familiarity with drawing and surveying, but the text is adapted primarily for students who do not receive training along the lines of the usual course in Highway or Civil Engineering. The text is intended to familiarize the student with the relation of highway improvement to national progress, to indicate the various problems of highway administration and to set forth the usual methods of design and construction for rural highways in sufficient detail to establish a clear understanding of the distinguishing characteristics and relative serviceability of each of the common types of roadway surface.Experience with classes made up of students in agriculture or agricultural engineering and with trade school students in road making served as a guide in the selection and arrangement of the material. Detailed discussion of tests of materials and of the theory of design has to a considerable extent been eliminated as being outside of the scope of the course for which the text is intended. In the preparation of American Rural Highways reference was had to many books on highway subjects and to current periodical literature. Wherever direct extracts were made from such source, appropriate acknowledgment appears in the text.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There are mentions of Indian trouble, transportation difficulties and long forgotten towns that have faded into history. And it was written by a man who was there. It was disappointing that some pages were smudged and mostly unreadable, but that was mentioned when I ordered it, but the reason for only four stars on my review. The book, however, was published in 1904 and is mostly quite readable and very interesting.

The instructions for making patterns are great, but not really beginner material. The projects tend to be repetitive, but I think the kids I work with will like some of them.

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things.

The phone booth exists as a fond but distant memory for some people, and as a strange and dysfunctional waste of space for many more. Ariana Kelly approaches the phone booth as an entity that embodies diverse attitudes about privacy, freedom, power, sanctuary, and communication in its various forms all around the world. Through portrayals of phone booths in literature, film, personal narrative, philosophy, and religion, Phone Booth offers a definitive account of an object on the cusp of obsolescence.

Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Phone Booth (Object Lessons)By Ariana Kelly

Review

"In this delightful set of mini-essays, Ariana Kelly has created a paen, rather than an elegy, in celebration of the many dimensions of the vanishing phone booth. Her text gleans images and sensations from our collective memory of the once (if briefly) ubiquitous structure. Site of superhero transformations, crimes, communications, quick changes, and other coins of the social realm, the phone booth and the kiosk served as small theaters of intimate activity in full view of the public eye, a curious combination of enclosed and exposed space. She shifts scale from the minutiae of physical observation-hanging wires and scratched glass-to the larger cultural issues of communication and longing, mixing personal experience with historical, literary, and film references throughout." ―Johanna Drucker, Professor of Information Studies, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

"Fascinated and attuned, I was cabled into Phone Booth. Ariana Kelly replenishes the work on speculative telephony in an altogether compelling way." ―Avital Ronell, University Professor in the Humanities, New York University, USA, and author of The Telephone Book

"The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic: the books take ordinary―even banal―objects and animate them with a rich history of invention, political struggle, science, and popular mythology. Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. Be warned: once you've read a few of these, you'll start walking around your house, picking up random objects, and musing aloud: 'I wonder what the story is behind this thing?'"―Steven Johnson, best-selling author of How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World

"The Object Lessons project, edited by game theory legend Ian Bogost and cultural studies academic Christopher Schaberg, commissions short essays and small, beautiful books about everyday objects from shipping containers to toast. The Atlantic hosts a collection of "mini object-lessons", brief essays that take a deeper look at things we generally only glance upon ('Is bread toast only insofar as a human toaster perceives it to be "done?" Is bread toast when it reaches some specific level of nonenzymatic browning?'). More substantive is Bloomsbury's collection of small, gorgeously designed books that delve into their subjects in much more depth." ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

About the Author Ariana Kelly is a freelance writer and educator. She teaches English literature and comparative religion at the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California, USA, and has written for, among other publications, The L.A. Review of Books and Salon.

On the one hand, it's both a history of the phone booth -- how it evolved as a technology and became ubiquitous, only to begin to disappear (or will it?). On the other hand, the book is a cultural analysis -- examining how the phone booth has played a captivating role in our imaginations in films like The Matrix and in the origin of Superman. The book moves at a quick pace. It's filled with scenes and descriptions that will show you a whole new story about the phone booth.Highly recommended!

By turns informative, elegiac, playful and provocative, Kelly's book makes plain just how integral this simple object has been to our domestic and public spaces since the early 20th century. At the same time, she makes it clear just how far we've changed that such a thing is no longer. Filled with questions of privacy and longing, and thoroughly enjoyable throughout, this is easily one of the best books of nonfiction I've read this year.

Excerpt from Rules and Practice for Adjusting WatchesIn the early days of horology the apprentice was taught the art of making a complete watch.Production was slow, very few duplicate watches were constructed, and it was necessary that extra material be made individually by hand in the same way that the original part was produced. As time passed the value of the repairer was indicated by his ability to make new parts and to replace them so that the watch would again be in running condition. This was the prevailing situation for many years and the repairer was judged according to his skill in making and finishing the various parts.A similar method of judging ability is still in force among some employers, although the development of the industry into machine and specialized work has made many changes in regard to the most important duties of the repairer. It is no longer necessary for him to know how to make a complete watch and only on occasional instances is it necessary for him to make a part. Genuine material for modern watches is supplied by the manufacturer at less expense than it can be produced by the individual and in this particular branch of the work the repairers requirements have been very considerably curtailed.A more exacting and a higher standard of timekeeping has developed, however, and in this field the requirements of the watchmaker have increased to the extent that it is no longer sufficient to merely restore a good watch to running condition. It must keep time. This development has grown gradually and surely and the past twenty-five years may be assumed as the period of greatest advance. It has been made possible by scientific and practical refinements which permit the adjustment of watches so that they will keep time within closely defined allowances under varying conditions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, in "Cramming more components onto Integrated Circuits" in Electronics Magazine (April 19, 1965), made the observation that, in the history of computing hardware, the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles approximately every two years. Since its inception in 1965 until recent times, this law has been used in the semiconductor industry to guide investments for long-term planning as well as to set targets for research and development. These investments have helped in a productive utilization of wealth, which created more employment opportunities for semiconductor industry professionals. In this way, the development of Moore's Law has helped sustain the progress of today's knowledge-based economy. While Moore's Law has, on one hand, helped drive investments toward technological and economic growth, thereby benefiting the consumers with more powerful electronic gadgets, Moore's Law has indirectly also helped to fuel other innovations in the global economy. However, the Law of diminishing returns is now questioning the sustainability of further evolution of Moore's Law and its ability to sustain the progress of today's knowledge based economy. The lack of liquidity in the global economy is truly bringing the entire industry to a standstill and the dark clouds of an economic depression are hovering over the global economy. What factors have been ignored by the global semiconductor industry leading to a demise of Moore's Law? Do the existing business models prevalent in the semiconductor industry pose any problems? Have supply chains made that progress unsustainable? In today's globalized world, have businesses been able to sustain national interests while driving the progress of Moore's Law? Could the semiconductor industry help the entire global economy move toward a radiance of the new crimson dawn, beyond the veil of the darkest night by sustaining the progress of Moore's Law? The entire semiconductor industry is now clamoring for a fresh approach to overcome existing barriers to the progress of Moore's Law, and this book delivers just that. Moore's Law can easily continue for the foreseeable future if the chip manufacturing industry becomes sustainable by having a balanced economy. The sustainable progress of Moore's Law advocates the "heresy" of transforming the current economic orthodoxy of monopoly capitalism into free-market capitalism. The next big thing that everybody is looking forward to after mobile revolution is the "Internet of Things" (IoT) revolution. While some analysts forecast that the IoT market would achieve 5.4 billion connections worldwide by 2020, the poor consumer purchasing power in global economy makes this forecast truly questionable. Sustaining Moore's Law presents a blueprint for sustaining the progress of Moore's Law to bring about IoT Revolution in the global economy.

Great book on IoT and Semiconductor ecosystem By Satinder Paul Singh As a foreword :- Based on many years of experience in the trenches of Semiconductors, Apek created a readable book covering the ins and outs and made a strong connection between Moore’s law and macroeconomic policy. Author is able to point out very clearly that without proper economic policies the future validity of this law is at best ambiguous. This book gave me the map I was looking for so I could look ahead and navigate the ergonomics of IoT market to find the new jobs and IoT initiatives before they are announced - there are so many great points and combined research that it led me to look in places I would never have thought of without a guide! So much of our business is learned from hit-or-miss experience--it's nice to see a comprehensive look at all the factors to be considered when drafting an economics of Semiconductor market. Particularly when the standard sales process is so counterproductive. You can't use manipulative techniques that are effective for selling dog food or soft drinks to the general public.Apek touches on the huge number of factors and the social networking aspects of our trade. As he puts it:'Sustaining Moore's Law: Uncertainty Leading to a Certainty of IoT Revolution' provides an excellent overview of the rapidly changing strategic environment in the semiconductor industry, and some sense of where things are headed. This book has a perspective on IoT that I hadn't seen before. Very creative use of combining technology and economics. It uses a lot of analogies that made it easy to understand then build on them in a practical manner then further applying to a complex system. I bought it on a whim but it opened my eyes to some real business potential. I recommend it to anyone who is keen on semiconductor and IoT convergance. Now we will see how the IoT will be evolving in the next ten years. Let see what the reaction will be from the consumer after the first cyber security attack.Having realized and recognized the strategic significance of the brewing IoT idea across the industry verticals, a host of investors, innovators, institutions and even individuals across the globe are embarking on the IoT journey with all clarity and confidence. This book brings together timely, mind provoking, and comprehensive materials to give you a better understanding of the IoT/M2M technological and business landscape on top of current semiconductor ecosystem… . I also believe this book, which I highly recommend, is the first on the market that covers almost all of the related subjects. As the title of this review says...this is an admirable effort. Well done, Apek

After a fifteen-year hiatus from the world of guns, journalist, sports shooter, and former soldier A.J. Somerset no longer fit in with other firearm enthusiasts. Theirs was a culture much different than the one he remembered: a culture more radical, less tolerant, and more immovable in its beliefs, “as if [each] gun had come with a free, bonus ideological Family Pack [of political tenets], a ready-made identity.” To find the origins of this surprising shift, Somerset began mapping the cultural history of guns and gun ownership in North America. Arms: The Culture and Credo of Gun is the brilliant result.

How were firearms transformed from tools used by pioneers into symbols of modern manhood? Why did the NRA’s focus shift from encouraging responsible gun use to lobbying against gun-safety laws? What is the relationship between gun ownership and racism in America? How have the film, television, and video game industries molded our perception of gun violence? When did the fear of gun seizures arise, and how has it been used to benefit arms manufacturers, lobbyists, and the far-right?

Few ideas divide communities as much as those involving firearms, and fewer authors are able to tackle the subject with the same authority, humor, and intelligence. Written from the unique perspective of a gun lover who’s disgusted with what gun culture has become, Arms is destined to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

Review

A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2015

Listed among the top five books of 2015 by The Hill Times

Praise for Arms and A.J. Somerset

"What makes his book entertaining, often funny and ultimately an important addition to the limited canon on guns is that Somerset is a gun guy. He owns them, shoots them and loves them. And yet he is exasperated because gun owners, along with their culture and rhetoric, have increasingly 'grown more radical,' leaving 'anyone who breaks ranks' as a 'traitor to the cause.'"—Michael S. Rosenwald, The Washington Post

“By digging deep into history, brushing off dusty lawsuits, and pounding some pavement, Somerset manages to avoid all of the clichés about North American gun politics and overturn everything that is held to be gospel. This is a brilliant piece of investigative journalism and surprisingly entertaining.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Every political question evokes emotion, but a few [like gun control] are so bound up with visceral feelings that even close friends find it hard to disagree over them without rancor and exasperation ... [Somerset] has a fine talent for narrative writing ... Valid and thoughtful."—Wall Street Journal

"What we talk about when we talk about guns: How did they become as American as baseball and as sacred as Jesus? And is there any going back? These are among the questions explored by a onetime soldier in an unflinching journey across our cultural battlefields."—O, The Oprah Magazine

"A one-time soldier, [Somerset] paints a convincing picture ... Yet he maintains a consistent sense of humor—self-deprecating, gruff, curmudgeonly."—Globe & Mail

"[Arms is] a pleasingly acerbic popular history—an equal-opportunity lambasting of everyone from American gun weenies to Canadian cultural nationalists."—Maclean’s

"Somerset's writing is an odd but effective mix of classic argument/thesis prose and zippy school-of-New-Journalism narrative a-la Hunter S. Thompson or Tom Wolfe... Once you tune into his blending of third-person research with first-person anecdotes, the book pulls you along. Arms entertains — even as it educates."—The Winnipeg Free Press

"There are big parts of the book I disagree with, but [A.J. Somerset is] a very good writer. There are passages that are great … really, really interesting."—Cam Edwards, NRA News’ Cam & Co.

"Rambling, tragic, and surprisingly funny."—Quill & Quire

"A timely book that informs our ongoing conversation about gun violence."—Gill Deacon, CBC’s q

"A great book."—Emily Keeler, National Post

"A very interesting read ... and not what you might expect ... if gun culture fascinates you ... I'd encourage you to check it out."—Ryan Jespersen, CHED Radio

"Absolutely fabulous."—Terry Moore, The Drive (CFAX Victoria)

"Thought-provoking ... A well-researched perspective on ... gun culture that can appeal to gun rights novices and those who are already well-versed in this debate."—McGill Tribune

In Arms, novelist, sports shooter, and former army reservist A.J. Somerset instills new life in the gun book's third wave: neither reportage nor redneck tourism, Arms brings ballistics, legal history, and criminology to bear on the gun in fiction and film. A sharp-eyed, snarky, sure-handed, and sportive take on America's favorite weapon.

A.J. Somerset's nonfiction has appeared in numerous outdoor magazines, and his first novel, Combat Camera, won the Metcalf-Rooke Award.

From the Back Cover

After a fifteen-year hiatus from the world of guns, journalist, sports shooter, and former soldier A.J. Somerset no longer fit in with other firearm enthusiasts. Theirs was a culture much different than the one he remembered: a culture more radical, less tolerant, and more immovable in its beliefs, "as if [each] gun had come with a free, bonus ideological Family Pack [of political tenets], a ready-made identity." To find the origins of this surprising shift, Somerset began mapping the cultural history of guns and gun ownership in North America. Arms: The Culture and Credo of Gun is the brilliant result.

How were firearms transformed from tools used by pioneers into symbols of modern manhood? Why did the NRA's focus shift from encouraging responsible gun use to lobbying against gun-safety laws? What is the relationship between gun ownership and racism in America? How have the film, television, and video game industries molded our perception of gun violence? When did the fear of gun seizures arise, and how has it been used to benefit arms manufacturers, lobbyists, and the far-right?

Few ideas divide communities as much as those involving firearms, and fewer authors are able to tackle the subject with the same authority, humor, and intelligence. Written from the unique perspective of a gun lover who's disgusted with what gun culture has become, Arms is destined to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

About the Author A. J. Somerset has been a soldier, a technical writer, a programmer, and a freelance photographer. His non-fiction has appeared in numerous outdoor magazines in Canada and the United States, and his articles have been translated into French and Japanese. His first novel, Combat Camera, won the Metcalf-Rooke Award.

Written with humor and a keen insight into the mythology of gun nuttery in it's many forms this easy to read book lays out the history and pathology of gun worship and abuse. As a gun owner myself I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of why the gun debate is, as Somerset says, like two tribes of monkeys flinging poo at each other.

By Anna in PDX (was Cairo) Disclosure: Although I've never met the author in person, we interact on LibraryThing so he is a friend of sorts. I bought this book because I had heard about it from him and he talked about his research during the writing process.Gun politics in the U.S. is a very polarized topic and I think A. J., who is Canadian, was remarkably even-handed in his examination of why that is. Even-handed, but also direct and cutting through the many propagandistic talking points on gun rights and gun control, clearly calling them out for the nonsense they are.I grew up in rural Oregon and I have many acquaintances who own guns and have bought into the gun nut culture in one way or another which frustrates me. Once in a while I can get one of them to admit that the issue is complicated, and it feels really gratifying. If only we could talk with and not past each other! This book was like a quest, a search for a holy grail, the decoder ring that explained gun nuttery. The author, a former gun instructor with the Canadian armed forces, was getting back into shooting after a hiatus of many years, and found that his hobby had become radicalized, and he set out to figure out why. A lot of the why tended to be ideas from their neighbor to the south. Much of the book is about specifically U.S. political history, court decisions, state initiatives, etc and their impact on the loosely affiliated group of guys who like guns.I learned a lot from this book. Much of what I learned is that the facile arguments I have somewhat identified with on the anti-gun side are simplistic and flawed. But I also got a really entertaining tour through the pro-gun Fever swamps.I highly recommend this book to anyone who lives in North America and is at all interested in our gun problems. Or, is interested in guns at all. I feel that the last greatest hope we have to move forward on finding sane public policies on gun control is the gun owners and enthusiasts who do not buy into paranoid hype. If they can unite with those of us who don't want to own guns, against the poisonous far right gun nut culture, we can make our country safer for everyone while people can still go hunting, target shooting, civil war reenacting, etc.

This is an individual who served with distinction in his country's armed forces, who hunts regularly and enthusiastically--hardly a bleeding heart liberal. Somerset openly confesses to liking guns, but he doesn't fetishize weapons or insist he has the God-given right to carry a gun in any situation or setting he chooses. Somerset, in other words, is a reasonable man, but many pro gun supporters are NOT; since the 1970s, the National Rifle Association has had its agenda hijacked by a small, vocal minority who work strenuously to sabotage gun laws, resisting any legislation that restricts or regulates firearms. They like to cite the Second Amendment as their validation, even though former Chief Justice Burger--aware the clause only relates to the formation of militias in times of tyranny and civil unrest--called their stance a legal and constitutional "fraud". The author expertly summarizes the history of arms and the American experience, how the two dovetail...and how, somewhere along the way, everything went very, very wrong.

Excerpt from The Gas EngineThis book is not intended as a complete treatise on the subject. The object of the author is to present the principles governing the salient features of gas-engine construction and operation in as simple a manner as possible, and to that end the comprehensive discussions of the thermodynamic properties of gases and of hypothetical heat-energy cycles, of the character commonly found in text-books, have been avoided. Since the pressures, temperatures, and energy transformations which occur in a gas engine cylinder cannot be adequately explained without the use of algebraic equations which appear complex to a beginner, such equations have been employed in that connection, but their use has been restricted to a single chapter. This chapter may be omitted without sacrifice by readers who wish merely general, rudimentary information, but not by real students of the subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book concerns itself mostly with the design of the larger engines of the period, and, therefore, may not be of great interest to the antique gas engine community.

Constantine Cavafy is considered the greatest of modern Greek poets. His poems treat historical, philosophical, and erotic themes, sometimes altogether, and share a unique “voice.” This volume includes a fresh translation by noted classical scholar Alan Boegehold, a translation that captures the style as well as the meaning of the Greek, and a foreword discussing Cavafy’s distinctive values.

Cavafy: 166 Poems: Translated with an Introduction by Alan L. BoegeholdBy Consantine P. Cavafy

Review There are many English translations of the work of the Alexandrian Greek poet C.P. Cavafy (1863−1933), and the coincidence of two recent translations, one much discussed and one more obscure, illustrates why.

Famous for his poems of erotic longing and regret, Cavafy writes about the Greek past as if it were a personal memory, as indeed it was for he made it so. We see this in his poems about Julian (Roman emperor, born in 361 BC in Constantinople, the half-brother of Constantine the Great). Called The Apostate, Julian, raised a Christian, converted and cracked down on the paganism of contemporary Christians in Antioch. As historian Glenn Bowersock has written in his indispensable From Gibbon to Auden: Essays on the Classical Tradition (Oxford, 240 pages, $45), Antioch "with its traditional style of life was the kind of city in which he longed to live"--for in his own day, homosexuality remained a scandal and a crime.

Even with Bowersock's help, reading Cavafy is a personal thing. Take the new translations by Daniel Mendelsohn in two volumes: C. P. Cavafy: Collected Poems (Knopf, 547 pages, $35) and C. P. Cavafy: The Unfinished Poems (Knopf 119 pages $30). Mendelsohn attempts to render the complex stylistic mix of the original, and, within the parameters set by English, may be felt to do so. "Julian and the Antiochenes" opens:

"Was it ever possible for them to give up / their beautiful way of life; the rich array / of their daily entertainments; their glorious / theatre where was born a union of Art / and the erotic predilections of the flesh!"

Compare this to the translation by Alan L. Boegehold in Cavafy: 166 Poems (Axios Press, 240 pages, $18):

"Was it possible ever for them to disown / their beautiful life, their mix / of daily entertainments / their luminous / theatre where Art joined / the erotic tendencies of flesh?" Boegehold's versions startle one with a tough lyric fierceness as well as wisdom; his Cavafy is indeed "something precious and real."

Through a mixture of Latinate and Germanic−root words, both translators attempt the rich diction of the original Greek. Mendelsohn's longer line allows the stanza to breath a little easier in keeping with the luxurious topic. Behind the difference, however, is interpretation. Reading Cavafy in these translations is profoundly personal and ultimately rewarding. In his poems, the presense of Cavafy's past--and it goes back centuries--is positively Proustian. --Providence (RI) Journal Bulletin, August 28, 2009

A new translation of the historical Greek poet Cavafy's important work in the field of poetry By Midwest Book Review A good translation can mean the difference between art and Engrish. "Cavafy: 166 Poems" is a new translation of the historical Greek poet Cavafy's important work in the field of poetry. Alan Boegehold serves as the translator and through deft research and ideas, he adapts Cavafy's work to modern English while doing his best to retain his original Greek language style. A strong choice for those who seek well-translated classical poetry, "Cavafy" is a top pick. "In the Same Place": What's around: house, bars, and neighborhood/I look at and walk in year on year,/in joy and in grief I brought you into being/with so much incident, with so many troubles,/for me you have turned wholly into physical/sensation.
