Excerpt from Railroad Accidents Their Cause and PreventionMuch has been said and written during recent years about the increasing number of rail road accidents in this country - their cause and what action should be taken by the government, the railroads and the employees to reduce them and the consequent loss of life and limb resulting therefrom. Believing that if the cause of our many accidents were properly understood more care would be taken by the corporations, employees and persons at fault to reduce the number, I shall try to point out in the following pages what investigation has shown me to be the cause of many accidents and how their reoccurrence could, I think, be prevented. In the transaction of the business of a railroad its first and highest duty is to the passengers, to carry them safely and speedily; next, to take care of the property entrusted to it for transportation, and for which it is practically an insurer against everything but the act of God or the public enemy, and deliver it with reasonable dispatch to the consignee in practically the same condition as that in which it is received.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Prescient but only because common sense rules By Kris This very old document is chock-full of short-form case studies of railroad accidents and their causes. It is written for the railroad worker of the early 20th century using examples from both 19th and 20th century accidents. Common sense prevails in the explanations, for the most part, but the frank presentation of the vast majority of the problems of that period's railway safety problems are still applicable today. From simple dreadful mistakes passengers make on the platform to exploding steam engine boilers to signal failures, this is a comprehensive commentary on railway safety of the early 20th century for just a buck.

I felt as though the author was in a sense spending most of his time finding fault with railroad companies most of the time. the appendix of the train rules were very good.

Easy reading without getting into too many details. As a person who is into railroading and work on railroad equipment, I really enjoyed this. Shows that people did stupid things even so long ago, but instead of doing it in your car, you trusted your life to someone else to get you there, in a train, just like flying today, and you have to hope they can make the right decision all the time.

My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together. What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

PDF Ebook Aerial Interdiction: Air Power and the Land Battle in Three American WarsBy Eduard Mark

This analytical work by Dr. Eduard Mark of the Center for Air Force History examines the practice of air interdiction in three wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the war in Southeast Asia. It considers eleven important interdiction campaigns, all of them American or Anglo-American, for only the United States and Great Britain had the resources to conduct interdiction campaigns on a large scale in World War II. Dr. Mark proposes what he considers to be a realistic objective for interdiction: preventing men, equipment, and supplies from reaching the combat area when the enemy needs them and in the quantity he requires. As Mark notes, there has been little intensive scholarship on the subject of interdiction especially when contrasted with the work done on strategic bombardment. In the wake of the Persian Gulf War, the reader will no doubt be impressed by the comparatively low performance of weapons in these pre-Gulf war campaigns. DESERT STORM showed that recent advances in technology had enabled interdiction to reach new levels of effectiveness, especially in night operations. Yet, as the reader soon discovers, interdiction in the pre-Gulf campaigns sometimes profoundly influenced military operations. As is often the case in military history, the effects were often serendipitous-not as planned or anticipated, but present nevertheless. By the middle of the Second World War, aircraft were already demonstrating that they could have a devastating impact upon a military force’s ability to wage war. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, for example, complained bitterly during the North African and Normandy campaigns about air power that, in his memorable words, “pinned my army to the ground” and otherwise denied his forces both supplies and the ability to freely maneuver. The aircraft and weapons that caused the German commander such problems were, by today’s standards, primitive. The accuracy of bombing was calculated in terms of circles with radii of hundreds or even thousands of feet. Bridges took dozens, sometimes hundreds, of sorties to destroy, meaning that a simultaneous taking-down of an enemy’s transportation network was impossible. A single target also required strike packages of hundreds of airplanes. Target “revisiting” because of poor bombing accuracy meant that aircraft loss rates were often alarmingly high. Yet, even with all of these limitations, air attack still had the ability to hinder, limit, and eventually help defeat a robust, well-trained and well-equipped opponent. It is important that this be recognized, just as it is important that we recognize that modern air war, as shown in the Gulf conflict, is very different and more effective, not only from that of 1941-1945, but from the more recent Vietnam era as well. The challenges posed by aerial interdiction from the dust of the Western Desert to the triple canopy of Southeast Asia gave but a hint of how devastating an attacker the airplane would prove in the Gulf War of 1991. There, advanced strike aircraft-some of them stealthy as well-dropped precision munitions with shattering effect against the Iraqi military machine. As shocking as it might seem, revolutionary advances in precision navigation and weapons technology had largely reduced the previous experiences of interdiction to historical anecdote, not historical prediction. Today, in the era of Global Reach-Global Power, the lessons of aerial interdiction through Vietnam are instructive, for no other reason than this: they reveal how far modern airpower has come. This book, by tracing air interdiction from the Western Front through Vietnam, and by examining both its failures and successes, fills an important gap in the history of air power and enables us to appreciate to an even greater degree the profound significance that air power possesses now and for the future.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Study of Interdiction in WW II, Korea, and Vietnam By David W. Bobb Author Eduard Mark has done a superb job of recounting the strengths and weaknesses of aerial interdiction efforts in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Starting with the Allied invasion of North Africa, Mark examines how the three-tiered system of Allied air operations was developed (primarily through British influence) and how that system remained in effect throughout the succeeding wars. As the author discusses the various operations in World War II, he is not afraid to state that things did not always go well regarding interdiction efforts and on more than one occasion, airmen could not deliver their promised results. At times, this was crucial, as in Sicily when controversial command decisions coupled with non-effective employment of air and naval assets allowed nearly 40,000 Germans to escape to Italy. At other times, as in preparation for D-Day, aerial interdiction played a key role in preventing or delaying German troops and supplies from reaching the Normandy beachhead. As World War II gave way to Korea and later, Vietnam, Mark does an excellent job of providing insight into how those wars differed from World War II, how political constraints hampered the effectiveness of interdiction efforts, and how the Air Force's own single-mindedness of pursuing the strategic mission overshadowed equipment and training needed to successfully prosecute interdiction missions. Also, the limited effectiveness of interdiction due to sophisticated antiaircraft defenses and topographical features is examined. In sum, Mark presents a very well-balanced account of aerial interdiction from its development in North Africa through Vietnam. His frankness in stating when things went well and when they didn't go well, along with his analysis, add to the credibility of his writing. Lastly, his use of maps at the beginning of each chapter, coupled with photos throughout the book make it easy for the reader to visualize where things are happening and how they are unfolding.

In my view, this book describes the main constructive characteristics and functional principles of very high voltage substations. It also offers in a detailed and comprehensive manner a myriad of useful technical aspects, and managerial strategies for the design of secondary electrical systems according to the latest technologies.I strongly recommend it for everyone involved in the design and construction of very high voltage power systems. But since this book is a whole treatise on substations of any voltage level, it will also be useful for young engineers entering the electrical power system business.I particularly like the chapter related to technological trends, but what I love most are the pictures inside this book.

Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Glass-BlowingThe purpose of this little book is to provide a clear and detailed discussion of the elements of glass-blowing. Many laboratories in this country, especially in the west, are located a long way from any professional glass-blower, and the time and money spent in shipping broken apparatus several hundred miles to be mended could often be saved if some of the laboratory force could seal on a new stop-cock, replace a broken tube, or make some temporary repairs. Many men in physical or chemical laboratories have occasion to modify some piece of apparatus designed perhaps for other uses, or to design new apparatus. To such also, the ability to perform some of the operations herein described may be very valuable. No originality is claimed for the methods here described. They are those which the author has found most suitable and convenient in his own work, and most easily learned by students. The aim has been to describe each operation in such detail that a beginner can follow the process without help and, with practice, attain satisfactory results. It is, however, much easier to perform any of the operations described, after seeing some one else perform it correctly; since the temperature, the exact time to begin blowing the glass, and many other little details are very difficult to obtain from a description. It has not been thought worth while to describe the process of making stop-cocks, thermometers, vacuum tubes, etc., as such things can be purchased more cheaply and of much better quality than any amateur can make unless he is willing to spend a very large amount of time in practice. For similar reasons the manipulation of quartz glass has been omitted.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Useless even as a historical curiosity By R. Myers It's pretty obvious that a book from 1915 will not be an up to date text on aerodynamics, but this book fails even in being a useful view of the art and science of the time. This was written by a mechanical engineer who had several other guides for boys published. He apparently knew absolutely nothing about aerodynamics and didn't seem to care to learn. It seem that his main thesis is that all others working in the field missed the fact that orbital mechanics are a major factor in holding an airplane up. He states that at a speed of 100 mph 'motion which is nearly sufficient to maintain it in horizontal flight, independently of any plane surface'. Well in reality, the speed required would be more like 18,000 mph.He dismisses the fact that concave bottom surfaces of the wing produce lift with 'Certain kinds of beetles, and particularly the common housefly, disprove that theory, as their wings are perfectly flat'.It would seem that someone tasked with providing an introduction to aerodynamics and aviation for children would have done better to try to summarize the current thinking on the matter, rather than advance his own crackpot hypotheses. To realize that a publisher, even then, would sell this to technically minded children, is a frightening thought.

Young Lions: How Jewish Authors Reinvented the American War Novel was a FINALIST for the 2015 National Jewish Book Award.Young Lions: How Jewish Authors Reinvented the American War Novel shows how Jews, traditionally castigated as weak and cowardly, for the first time became the popular literary representatives of what it meant to be a soldier and what it meant to be an American. Revisiting best-selling works ranging from Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead to Joseph Heller's Catch-22, and uncovering a range of unknown archival material, Leah Garrett shows how Jewish writers used the theme of World War II to reshape the American public's ideas about war, the Holocaust, and the role of Jews in postwar life. In contrast to most previous war fiction these new "Jewish" war novels were often ironic, funny, and irreverent and sought to teach the reading public broader lessons about liberalism, masculinity, and pluralism.

Young Lions: How Jewish Authors Reinvented the American War Novel (Cultural Expressions)By Leah Garrett

Review A "scholarly and provocative book."  - The Wall Street Journal. "A probingly intelligent book" that shows a "rare understanding not just of American Jewish life and culture during World War II and its aftermath, but of U.S. society in all its glorious complexity for all seasons. . In today's academic environment [Garrett] is a refreshing exception to the prevailing tendentiousness and fashionable prejudices, a model of accurate and fair characterization." The Washington Times."For anyone who still believes the myth that American Jews didn't talk about the Holocaust until 1961 or 1967, pile these best-sellers onto the mountain of evidence that Jews were fascinated and shaken by the genocide and began to respond vociferously as soon as they learned about it. An important new book... Garrett makes her case very well." The Forward Newspaper.". . .Young Lions: How Jewish Authors Reinvented the American War Novel is an exciting, wide-ranging, and necessary book. Its powerful and welcome perspective and sturdy research make it an important platform for future studies." The Jewish Book Council Magazine.

"Theoretically sophisticated and probing, Young Lions is full of insights that are of interest to the literary scholar, the historian, and the student of Jewishness and of American ethnic relations." —Werner Sollers, Henry B. and Anne M. Cabot Professor of English and of African American Studies at Harvard University and author of The Temptation of Despair: Tales of the 1940s

“Young Lions is an important contribution to the fields of Jewish American literature and World War II literature.” —Victoria Aarons, author of A Measure of Memory: Storytelling and Identity in American Jewish Fiction“A fascinating study of war novels both familiar and forgotten and a fresh interpretation that illuminates previously hidden aspects of these once popular books, Leah Garrett’s lucid study will change how we think about World War II, the Holocaust, and American Jews.”—Deborah Dash Moore, Director of the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies and Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor of History and author of GI Jews: How World War II Changed a Generation “For anyone who still believes the myth that American Jews didn’t talk about the Holocaust until 1961 or 1967, pile these best-sellers onto the mountain of evidence that Jews were fascinated and shaken by the genocide and began to respond vociferously as soon as they learned about it." —The Forward"A masterful exercise in excavation by a superb literary and cultural historian.  Here is an extraordinary tour of literary terrain so familiar and accessible to the common reader and so marginalized in literary criticism.  Leah Garrett opens up for us a crucial chapter in American Jewish cultural expression with consistent intelligence and an infectious enthusiasm." —Steven J. Zipperstein, Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History at Stanford University and author of Rosenfeld's Lives: Fame, Oblivion, and the Furies of Writing

About the Author LEAH GARRETT is Loti Smorgon Professor of Contemporary Jewish Life and Culture at Monash University in Australia. She has published four books and numerous articles on Jewish literature. Garrett's scholarship has been devoted to understanding how Jewish authors in an array of languages used their literary discourse to enact, reimagine, and subvert conventional ideas about the relationship between Jews and the modern world.

By Reader Ms. Garrett, using the lens of literature, deftly examines a sensitive and not often discussed dimension of Jewish culture- the almost Manichean theme of "Talmudic" versus "Muscular" Jews. I only wish she had done a deeper dive into this subject. I found it interesting how she dissected the various post-World War II authors portrayals of Jewish soldiers, based both on their own experiences in that war and, perhaps, also on their perceptions of reader audience expectations. Also of interest was her analysis of how (but not so much on the "why') Hollywood deviated from the depiction of the Jewish soldiers in the novels to those in movie-land. As a career Army officer who grew up with the novels and movies Ms. Garrett analyzes,, and went on to serve in Vietnam, in combat, at the "tip of the spear," in an Infantry Company (Purple Heart, inter-alia), I could not help comparing my experience and motivations with those of the authors in 'Young Lions," and found myself hoping that Ms. Garrett continues to explore, and open for discussion the topics she exposes in her well written and thoughtful work.

When Jessa Crispin was thirty, she burned her settled Chicago life to the ground and took off for Berlin with a pair of suitcases and no plan beyond leaving. Half a decade later, she’s still on the road, in search not so much of a home as of understanding, a way of being in the world that demands neither constant struggle nor complete surrender.           The Dead Ladies Project is an account of that journey—but it’s also much, much more. Fascinated by exile, Crispin travels an itinerary of key locations in its literary map, of places that have drawn writers who needed to break free from their origins and start afresh. As she reflects on William James struggling through despair in Berlin, Nora Barnacle dependant on and dependable for James Joyce in Trieste, Maud Gonne fomenting revolution and fostering myth in Dublin, or Igor Stravinsky starting over from nothing in Switzerland, Crispin interweaves biography, incisive literary analysis, and personal experience into a rich meditation on the complicated interactions of place, personality, and society that can make escape and reinvention such an attractive, even intoxicating proposition.           Personal and profane, funny and fervent, The Dead Ladies Project ranges from the nineteenth century to the present, from historical figures to brand-new hangovers, in search, ultimately, of an answer to a bedrock question: How does a person decide how to live their life?

The Dead Ladies Project: Exiles, Expats, and Ex-CountriesBy Jessa Crispin

Review "Unusual and absorbing. . . . Swift intelligence, fierce empathy, and dark humor." (Publishers Weekly)"A book of vigorous struggle and lucid confusion. It's also very, very funny. . . . The whole book is packed with delightfully offbeat prose. . . . And it's all over the place in terms of subject matter: sex, politics, history, philosophy, existential dread, gender dictates, difficult travel logistics, etc. . . . But that's exactly what it needs to be: a rambling polymorphous beast, as raw as it is sophisticated, as quirky as it is intense.” (Chicago Tribune)"Is it possible for a memoir to be at once introspective and yet fully embedded in the context of the world around it? The Dead Ladies Project seems to suggest that it is--or at least, that Bookslut founder Jessa Crispin is capable of making us believe it is. . . . Imbued with a deadpan sense of humor, The Dead Ladies Project tackles some of the weightiest subjects possible--suicide, death, infidelity, fulfillment--in a way that is always heartfelt but never heavy. The result is somewhat astounding: a philosophical musing on what it is to live one's best life, even if--or perhaps especially when—that best life fits no mold of conventionality or tradition." (Shelf Awareness)"Mordant wit and a dash of bravado. . . . An eloquently thought-provoking memoir." (Kirkus Reviews)"Suppose you could have for a traveling companion a changeling, someone who 'came to this planet as an already fully formed creature,' someone who’s looking for reasons to keep herself alive and is devoting every last particle of herself, body and soul, to this endeavor, who is willing to tell you every last thing that passes through her extraordinary mind as she takes you (for instance) to visit Berlin, Trieste, Sarajevo, Nora Barnacle, Rebecca West, Claude Cahun, who wants more than anything to make you 'take in the whole canvas without choosing, without discriminating'--wouldn’t you be beside yourself to have this fascinating creature beside you? I’d follow Jessa Crispin to the ends of the earth." (Kathryn Davis, author of Duplex: A Novel) "Crispin is both smart enough to know there are no answers, and human enough to admit she needs them; her resulting travelogue is a phenomenal record of the mind in service (maybe) of the heart." (Shalom Auslander, author of Hope: A Tragedy)"Read with caution: midway through The Dead Ladies Project you’ll be wanting to pack a suitcase and give away your possessions. Crispin is funny, sexy, self-lacerating, and politically attuned, with unique slants on literary criticism, travel writing, and female journeys. No one crosses genres, borders, and proprieties with more panache." (Laura Kipnis, author of Men: Notes from an Ongoing Investigation)"Jessa Crispin is trying to heal the rift between us regular people and the heroic age of art. The Dead Ladies Project, a dazzling literary travelogue, a series of un-bookish, wildly refined meditations on books and artists, is also the intimate record of a personal crisis. Art matters here in a way likely to scare Americans almost as much as they deserve. Crispin travels the Europe of the canon, of dead white men, studying its entrails. Both Viking and monk, she can write with a barbarian's romantic peremptoriness or with the withering self-containment of a philosopher. She rolls her eyes at the monotony of history's public face and throws everything in the story--including the put-upon mistresses forced to pinch pennies, the tampons, unwieldy suitcases, tedious dates and crying jags. But if these linked essays are written with a literary arsonist’s urgency, they are also full of a very rare reverence for art that matters. Interested in what the life of an artist really has to involve? Quit your MFA program and read this wonderful book!" (David McConnell, author of American Honor Killings)"Tracing a pilgrimage of sorts across Europe to places where artistic couples mostly came to grief, Jessa Crispin confronts in searing personal terms the problem not just of being but of being with someone else. It is an unsettling and unforgettable journey."--John Biguenet (John Biguenet, author of The Torturer's Apprentice)

About the Author Jessa Crispin is the editor and founder of the magazines Bookslut and Spolia. She has written for the New York Times, Guardian, Washington Post, Los Angeles Review of Books, NPR.org, Chicago Sun-Times, Architect Magazine, and other publications. 15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. many of my favorite things By bookmagic I really enjoyed this book because it has a lot of stuff in there that I like to read. I love reading about other people's traveling escapades while sitting comfortably in my house, on my couch, with my dogs. I like when I can feel a kinship with anyone who has also not chosen the predictable and expected life and feels like an outcast among married friends with children living in suburbia. Crispin seems very interesting, neurotic, and I like how much she swears. I love books, I love reading and have been a fan of Bookslut and Spolia for a longtime. Crispin has introduced me to books that aren't on every other bookish website and artists I didn't know or knew little about and she does the same with The Dead Ladies Project. It is the very opposite of Eat, Pray, Love. This is part memoir, part travel with history, and gossip about the lives and loves of dead artists. I am familiar with William James and Somerset Maugham (not all the dead ladies are ladies) but I didn't know anything about their private lives and how that played into their work. I had never heard of Claude Cahun, a lesbian artist living on Jersey Island during the Nazi occupation of WWII with her lover/step-sister and how they bravely peppered the German soldiers with propaganda pamphlets. She sounds fascinating and now I am sad that there is no biography written of her.I liked that Crispin went to Berlin, St. Petersburg, Galway, and Sarajevo and not Rome, Paris, and the Tuscan countryside. She didn't talk about Picasso or Sylvia Plath but Rebecca West and Margaret Anderson and Maude Gonne. She didn't talk of James Joyce but of his wife, Nora Barnacle.I read this slowly, not wanting it to end but since Crispin also leaves a nice reading list at the end, I now have several books I want to read just from reading this book. That is another thing to like about The Dead Ladies Project, it left me wanting to know more.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Odd and Intoxicating Mash-Up By Kathleen A. Flynn I really enjoyed The Dead Ladies Project! It combines elements of memoir, biography and travelogue, but is not really any of these things: it manages to be completely sui generis. Imagine your craziest, most darkly brilliant and unpretentiously erudite friend sitting with you down over a bottle of something strong and telling you about her time traveling around Europe in search of the ghosts of famous writers and other notables. Except she keeps digressing to tell you about her unhappy love affair with a married man... except she doesn't give you quite enough information to know just how you ought to think about this...That's what The Dead Ladies Project is like. It's unique; it's genius. One caveat: the more you know about the people she writes about, the more you will get out of it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. lots of good things including By Brian Cowling lots of good things including: a joke about cancers (the astrological sign) and how they approach situations (please read the book to find out the punchline), a scary story about a fairy, atheists are the new materialists and why they are boring, an interesting island, the word "lover," and a lot more. I'm buying one for my sister too, peace

Fans and newcomers of CAR TALK won't be disappointed By Midwest Book Review The Magliozzi brothers (a.k.a. the Tappet Brothers) here answer calls about and from mothers, giving funny advice on cars in their latest issue Car Talk: Maternal Combustion. In case you don't know them or their show, the brothers narrate the award-winning 'Car Talk' radio broadcast weekly on National Public Radio stations across the nation, accepting call-in questions addressed with a heavy dose of humor. Fans and newcomers of CAR TALK won't be disappointed in the one hour program of hilarity offered on Maternal Combustion: Calls About Moms And Cars.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. If You Love Car Talk By Randy O'Brien How could this show be so funny? Maybe it's because they laugh at their own jokes, or that while they're highly trained and educated engineers, they know just about as much about cars at the next guy. Short on actual information, you'll howl at some of the reactions to people's calls.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Three laughing Magliozzis!! By Chad Oberholtzer Having loved the Car Talk broadcast for years and having listened to several other compilation albums, I was excited to enjoy this collection called "Maternal Combustion," a random smattering of segments from the show that were calls from various mothers and even a few that included Click and Clack's own mother. And, as always, there was much laughter, much laughter about the laughter, much self-deprecation, many brotherly insults, a few motherly insults, and even a bit of actual car advice. As with the other compilation albums, the regular flow of a normal radio broadcast is lost, which actually makes these compilations less interesting to me than a typical hour of "Car Talk" whimsy. This particular collection includes a few ridiculous calls from mothers in which the actual talk about cars was completely lost in the midst of absurd parenting advice. But, of course, that's part of the fun.So, even more than normal, you really won't learn anything about addressing car problems with this album. And you certainly won't learn anything about how to raise children. But you'll hear the boys laughing at each other and at their mom, and even you'll hear her laughing at them (demonstrating where they learned their distinct laughter cadence). It's a chuckling hour well spent, one that I can happily recommend to others, with appropriate expectations...

Young Henry Ford is a visual and textual presentation of the first forty years of Henry Ford—an American farm boy who became one of the greatest manufacturers of modern times and profoundly impacted the habits of American life. In Young Henry Ford, Sidney Olson dispels some of the myths attached to this automobile legend, going beyond the Henry Ford of mass production and the five-dollar day, and offers a more intimate understanding of Henry Ford and the time he lived in. Through hundreds of restored photographs, including some of Ford's own taken with his first camera, Young Henry Ford revisits an America now gone—of long days on the farm, travel by horse and buggy, and one-room schoolhouses. Some of the rare illustrations include the first picture of Henry Ford, photos from Edsel's childhood, snapshots of the interior and exterior of the Ford homestead, Clara and Henry's wedding invitation, and photos of the early stages of the first automobile.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Book By Janice Teneyck This book is an excellent source on Henry Ford's family and the world he was born into in Dearborn at the time. I bought this originally because it is one of the few books out there with information about my forebear, Conrad Ten Eyck, and the relationship between the Ten Eycks and the Fords. That said, it was a very interesting read and had lots of delightful historical tidbits on Detroit, Dearborn and the man who made the 20th century the century of the Automobile.

Fathers, Preachers, Rebels, Men: Black Masculinity in U.S. History and Literature, 1820–1945,edited by Timothy R. Buckner and Peter Caster, brings together scholars of history and literature focused on the lives and writing of black men during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the United States. The interdisciplinary study demonstrates the masculine character of cultural practices developed from slavery through segregation. Black masculinity embodies a set of contradictions, including an often mistaken threat of violence, the belief in its legitimacy, and the rhetorical union of truth and fiction surrounding slavery, segregation, resistance, and self-determination. The attention to history and literature is necessary because so many historical depictions of black men are rooted in fiction. The essays of this collection balance historical and literary accounts, and they join new descriptions of familiar figures such as Charles W. Chesnutt and W. E. B. Du Bois with the less familiar but critically important William Johnson and Nat Love.

The 2008 election of Barack Obama is a tremendously significant event in the vexed matter of race in the United States. However, the racial subtext of recent radical political movements and the 2009 arrest of scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., demonstrate that the perceived threat posed by black masculinity to the nation’s unity and vitality remains an alarming one in the cultural imagination.

Review “Fathers, Preachers, Rebels, Men provides readers with a greater understanding of how blacks have attempted to construct agency in the face of historical stereotypes that perpetuated societal fear and anxiety toward black masculinity. It is an intellectually stimulating work that is an exemplar of thorough research and profound analysis.” —Timothy J. Brown, chair of the Department of Communication Studies, West Chester University of Pennsylvania “This collection successfully complicates the standard paradigm of the Nat Turner versus Uncle Tom images of nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century black masculinity. As the essays move forward into the twentieth century, the editors present a very fresh perspective on the crisis of ‘New Negro masculinity’ and the crisis of the black family. I particularly value the skillful framing of the work as an overview of visual images, literary texts, legal cases, memoirs, and historical accounts.” —Margo Natalie Crawford, associate professor of English, Cornell University

Whiskey making has been an integral part of American history since frontier times. In Kentucky, early settlers brought stills to preserve grain, and they soon found that the limestone-filtered water and the unique climate of the scenic Bluegrass region made it an ideal place for the production of barrel-aged liquor. And so, bourbon whiskey was born.

More than two hundred commercial distilleries were operating in Kentucky before Prohibition, but only sixty-one reopened after its repeal in 1933. As the popularity of America's native spirit increases worldwide, many historic distilleries are being renovated, refurbished, and brought back into operation. Unfortunately, these spaces, with their antique tools and aging architecture, are being dismantled to make way for modern structures and machinery. In The Birth of Bourbon, award-winning photographer Carol Peachee takes readers on an unforgettable tour of lost distilleries as well as facilities undergoing renewal, such as the famous Old Taylor and James E. Pepper distilleries in Lexington, Kentucky. This beautiful book also includes spaces that well-known brands, including Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, Four Roses, and Buffalo Trace, have preserved as a homage to their rich histories.

Using a technique known as high-dynamic-range imaging -- a process that produces rich saturation, intensely clarified details, and a full spectrum of light -- Peachee reveals the vibrant life lingering in artifacts from worn cypress fermenting tubs to extravagant copper stills. This lavish celebration of bourbon's heritage will delight whiskey aficionados, history buffs, and art lovers alike.

The Birth of Bourbon: A Photographic Tour of Early DistilleriesFrom The University Press of Kentucky

Review "Carol Peachee has done an excellent job of preserving glimpses of America's distilling heritage. Many of the old distilleries depicted in these images are long gone, while others are being repurposed, but changed. These images preserve the past as the future changes the distilling industry."―Michael Veach, author of Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey: An American Heritage

"The story of distilling, like the story of America, starts with the human need to secure a place that can produce enough to feed and shelter a family, the willingness to do hard work, the cleverness to do it efficiently, and the desire to do it well. It is America's story from its beginning to this moment."―Sarah Tate, founding partner of Tate Hill Jacobs Architects, Lexington, Kentucky

"Bourbon is a worldwide phenomenon, with drinkers as far away as Japan and Australia. But there's also a homegrown market for people interested in bourbon, and The Birth of Bourbon taps into that. Peachee's obvious talent and eye for lighting, contrast, detail, and framing make each picture captivating."―Andrew McMichael, professor of history at Western Kentucky University

"The pictures in this book speak more than a thousand words each. The author takes the idea of a private tour of a distillery to a whole new level. The Birth of Bourbon approaches the subject of bourbon from a very different perspective and reminds the reader that the fashion of bourbon is not a new idea but is fragile. A must for bourbon history enthusiasts."―Albert Schmid, author of The Kentucky Bourbon Cookbook

"[. . .] Peachee captures the vibrant and haunting beauty of the distilleries.

The Birth of Bourbon is a tour of Kentucky bourbon heritage that might have otherwise been lost if not for Peachee's determination to save it. The results not only document what remains, but they also showcase the beauty of these sites through a meditation on impermanence, labor, time, presence, and loss."―Broadway World

"Like an archaeologist with a camera, Kentucky-based photographer Carol Peachee has been on a mission to document a spirited slice of Bluegrass history.

[Her] photos do more than capture industrial artifacts―they also stand as a testament to generations of life and livelihood."―Gardner & Gun

"The Birth of Bourbon: A Photographic Tour of Early Distilleries [. . .] is an evocative exploration of bourbon's past. Peachee, a fine art photographer and cofounder of the Kentucky Women's Photography Network, has documented what's left of lost distilleries like Buffalo Springs and Atherton to the current renewal of the Old Taylor and James E. Pepper facilities. It's a very handsome book with more than 220 photographs."―Courier Journal

"With plentiful limestone-filtered springwater and an ideal climate, your old Kentucky home was God's gift to whiskey makers, and early settlers put grain to copper still and bourbon soon ran from it. But Prohibition cut the number of distilleries from more than two hundred to sixty-one, stranding scores of warehouses, grain hoppers, barrel rooms, boiler houses, and other grand relics that dot the Bluegrass State even today. The 238 mesmerizing, richly saturated color photos in this abandoned-distillery tour offer Americana at is best."―Foreword Reviews
