I found it a thoroughly interesting description of how a railroad was run at that time. Unfortunately, it did not include the illustrations of the original although it did have all the captions. It was interesting nevertheless.

Railroads as early industrial organizations (circa 1910) By Joseph Somsel The technology and the romance are not the foci here - it is the organization of the early 20th century corporations that ran the railroads. As I work in a very safety-conscious infrastructure, it was a illuminating to see the roots of how modern corporations are organized and run, at least on a operational and marketing level.It does sometimes read as an Horatio Alger booster book - a way to encourage and guide the aspirant railroad businessman. It is remarkably free of modern cynicism but gets the message across that business is to make money by serving and that safety is in everyone's interest.It is an enjoyable read - I've read it twice!

Foley An English railroad expert surveys the history and practice of railroading in America just before the roof collapses. The book is published in 1910, two years after sales of the Model T begin. The book sketches the history and goes into considerable detail about operations at the turn of the twentieth century. The author loves the railroads but he doesn't turn a blind eye to everything. It is a great source if you find you need (or just want) details about old railroads. Myself, I think it improves my understanding of American history.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great summary of Kacheloefen, if only all the text were there By dirk tempelman In all fairness, I have not tried to work this issue out with Amazon yet, but I ordered the kindle version of this book and for some reason, the last word and a half of each line is cut off. I tried to adjust view settings, margins, font sizes on my reader, but nothing worked. From the information that is legible, however, the book is a valuable summary of the history, function and materiality of kacheloefen, a subject on which information is otherwise difficult to find. Accompanying diagrams are a bit underwhelming, but they convey the information successfully nonetheless.I recommend buying an actual copy as opposed to the kindle version, which I would have done, but I have a presentation due on the material next week, and the lead time is several weeks for a paper version.

But, that hasn’t caused too much bias in my feelings towards what the editors have accomplished. This is a very thorough collection of articles, blog posts and analysis from the era when LOST aired and changed the television landscape forever. It has been organized in a way that is compelling to read from cover to cover. But, this is a book that is only enhanced by its e-book features. There are handy interactive links in each chapter to read summaries of each post allowing you to choose which one you want to read. There are links back to those summary pages within each post. And in the recap section you can easily jump to the next episode without scrolling through miles of awesome content. Each article has a link back to the original internet source material (if it still exists) and an indicator to the wealth of comments attributed to each post.There were many opinions on if LOST stuck the landing in the end. Whichever side of the fence you landed on, you will no doubt come out of this book with a more informed opinion of the show and what questions were or weren’t technically answered. There is an entire chapter featured on that polarizing series finale and tons of information for lovers and haters to chew on!I’ve certainly found new binge watchers of LOST coming to my blog and thankful that there is a wealth of content so that they can at least feel somewhat like they were part of the 6 year world captivating LOST discussion. This book is, however, written primarily for the architect. Most builders, we fancy, are already pretty well posted on the subject of the hardware which they are called upon to use in the construction and finish of a house; but our experience has led us to believe that architects, as a rule, seldom go any deeper into the subject than is necessary to decide whether knobs shall be of one material or another, or whether some particular pattern of sash-fast will be satisfactory to the owner. It is needless to say that a more extended acquaintance with the subject would do no one any harm, and might even be conducive to much good, if only in the way of providing more fittingly for the needs of the client. So I read the book, Short Stories by Jesus--the enigmatic parables of a controversial rabbi, as an early morning and late night meditation during the seasons of light this year: Christmas and Hanukkah, 2014. I have been a practicing and observant Christian for 67 years. The stories of Jesus' parables are so intimately familiar to me because they were the tales that fueled my learning to read in the 1940's before I ever went to school. To say I have read and heard each of Amy-Jill Levin's selections of Jesus' short stories 67 times would be an understatement. I thought I had them down cold. As I ploddingly chewed on each morsel this winter I tasted the truths in each mouthful through a whole new culinary window. Some I resisted because of the unfamiliar flavorings. Some were reminiscent of my favorite meals from childhood. Some were bitter in my mouth with what seemed like foreign spices or odd proportions. I suspended judgment and bit-by-bit began digesting Dr. Levine's theological feast. Every bite, those redolent of great meals throughout my life and those bitter in my mouth because of the changed viewpoints they evoked, became sweet as honey and thoroughly, spiritually nourishing in my belly. I am slow in posting this review for 3 reasons: 1. I am still caught up in a glorious reevaluation and deepened appreciation of the foundations of Christianity and its life in my life. 2. Levine's wonderful bibliography and references have led to other books to read which supplement her themes, and for now I just can't stop! 3. The book, literarily very well written, is not a quick-and-easy read. It is challenging before it becomes deeply satisfying. This is not a book just for Christians and/or Jews. This is a book for anyone who wrestles with the common human search for the meaning of life and the role that religion or lack of religion plays in that wrestling match.It has been a long time since a book took me on a journey through time and space and belief like this one has taken me: so absorbing, so challenging, so provocative. If a reader's mind has not become hardened by time and habit, but has remained curious, confident, and open to new insights to inform old and familiar thoughts, there are not enough stars to rate a book presented with the style and skill of this contemporary author and this contemporary subject.

By k.b. wilson Amy-Jill Levine puts nine stories of Jesus back into their original context. She challenges many modern interpretations of those stories and includes more than 400 notes, many with multiple references (never, incidentally, of Wikipedia) to explain her views. She deplores anti-Jewish interpretations, she does not disparage Jesus, nor Christianity. Anyone with more than a cursory interest in what the Bible says should carefully read this book.

Open-minded Approach to Thought-Provoking Parables By Jeremy Freeman This author provides many insights if you're open to different interpretations based on contextual knowledge of the period. My favorite is the parable of "The Pearl." I had my own favorite interpretation, but I enjoyed seeing how many different folks have seen this entirely differently. This is the point of good parables, more than one meaning can be pulled forth. If you approach the Bible as having fixed singular meanings, this book is not for you.I admit I was challenged by a very scholarly approach, dissecting the parable carefully. I often just wanted to get to the summary--tell me what it really means! But this misses the power of a good story. Sometimes to appreciate the full meaning, you need to turn it over, look at it from different angles, feel it slowly and try on these different meanings. This may not be the approach many take to the Bible, as we often want to believe there's one firm meaning there that all can see. What this author does successfully is show us that Jesus was like many thoughtful leaders--they didn't provide answers as much as they provoked us to search ourselves for how their story fits our circumstances.May you all find your "pearl."

In Waves, Fredric Raichlen traces the evolution of waves, from their generation in the deep ocean to their effects on the coast. He explains, in a way that is readily understandable to nonscientists, both the science of waves themselves and the technology that can be used to protect us against their more extreme forms, including hurricanes and tsunamis. After offering a basic definition of waves and explaining the mechanics of wind-wave generation, Raichlen describes how waves travel, how they shoal (rise), how they break, and how they transform in other ways. He goes on to describe, among other things, the complicated sun-Earth-moon combinations that create astronomical tides (the high and low tides that occur daily and predictably); the effects of waves on the beach, including rip currents and beach erosion, and on harbors and shipping; and the building of breakwaters to protect harbors and bays. He discusses hurricanes, storm surges, and hurricane-generated waves. He offers a brief history of tsunamis, including Sumatra's in 2004 and Japan's in 2011 and explains the mechanisms that generate them (including earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes).

Waves can be little ripples that lap peacefully at the shore or monstrous tsunamis that destroy everything in their paths. Describing the science underlying this astonishing variety, Waves offers a different kind of beach listening.

It has sections about waves, the wind, tides, waves and the shore, extreme waves, and a appendix and glossary of word definitions. The book contains equations, diagrams, and pictures. The book describes earthquake generated waves including the 2011 Japanese tsunami which generated "tidal waves".One oddity of layout is that a number of pages are black with large white text to emphasize points made in the text. I would have preferred pictures rather than repetition of the text.All in all, I enjoyed the book.PS: a great textbook reference is "Wind Waves, their generation and propagation on the ocean surface" by Blair Kinsman, Department of Oceanography, John Hopkins University.

Timely given the recent events around the world including Sandy and the Tsunami in Japan. I must say, I don't understand how the other reviewer found this book lacking. I also bought this book after reading the Wall Street Journal Review and I thought the writing was clear and engaging and the information was presented in a way that non technical readers could easily understand. This is a book that should be on the shelves of anyone living along the coasts, or anyone interested in how and why waves form the way they do.

An easy read since (1) the heavy math is in an appendix and (2) Mr. Raichlen provides us with a wonderful glossary. I wish more authors understood the importance of glossaries and complete indexes. One can only hope.

It's like an intimate conversation with an admired professional whose passion is reading and whose vocation is studying how people understand their own lives and choose to reveal them. It is a feast for anyone who loves books (and definitely not just for writers and writing students).Fans of Mary Karr's three memoirs will find fascinating information about what she left out and why. They will recognize her unique and compelling voice on every page and proceed through the book eager to read what comes next.She analyzes in helpful detail the authors and works she most admires, often adding fascinating anecdotes about them. She examines some of the high-profile failures as well. Karr shares background stories about her own writing, including the physical toll it has taken.What I most want to tell you is this. I read this book in one sitting, and when I finish this review I'm going to reread it. Then I'm going to reread Nabokov's "Speak, Memory." I will read anything Mary Karr wants to write.

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. A must read for anyone writing a memoir By Chris Edwards I bought Mary Karr's "Liars Club" three years ago when I first began writing my memoir. I loved her writing style and was both inspired and intimidated. I just finished this book and it does such a great job breaking down key components to the craft using examples from Karr's own work as well as works by other authors from classic to contemporary. If you are writing a memoir or thinking about writing one I strongly suggest picking this up. You will learn about the importance of voice and how to find yours and stay true to it. The art of showing, not telling (which is where I need the most help). How to use/select specific details to make scenes feel more carnal and truer to the reader. And get advice on things like how to handle writing about family and topics that may be sensitive to them. You can really tell that the author is a teacher–some chapters feel like they could actually have been taken from a lesson plan–but that's what makes this book so much better than some of the others I've read about writing memoirs that were penned by agents or other industry professional types. This book isn't just a list of general tips/advice. Mary Karr is a true master of the craft and digs deeper, providing examples to give the reader a better understanding. It's almost like sitting in on one of her classes. Which after reading this book, I'd really like to do. I wish this book had come out three years ago before I started writing but now I am using what I learned to revise and edit the manuscript I have. The only negative for me was one or two of the chapters focused too much on a particular author who's style and voice didn't resonate with my taste (Nabokov for example) so I glossed over those pages. But everybody's taste in books are different. That said, in my humble opinion, this is the best book written on the craft of memoir that I have read to date.

By Lori I have been an avid reader of Mary Karr's work for almost twenty years so I was very excited when this book was published. I have to say she has spoiled me for beautiful memoirs. She is a master of the craft and this book is a present she has wrapped up and given to her readers – and to all readers who love memoir.The Art of Memoir is also a treasure trove of invaluable information for any writer, but as a reader, I felt like I'd just crashed the private party of every memoirist's secret place. AOM made me feel privy to insider secrets and my appreciation of the genre went even deeper. She delves into her favorite memorists' efforts and explains what she thought worked and what didn’t work and why. She speaks to writers and tells them to keep their focus on their readers and to try to craft beautiful, carnal pictures/events so that readers might want to re-read their memoir (to Karr, therein lies the beauty of great memoir: re-reading). I appreciate any author who takes care to deliver to his/her readers a beautiful reading experience and clearly, Karr does.Karr even puts her own writing under the microscope and examines her life/life’s work full throttle and you get a front row seat to see how her writer-mind ferrets out her own truth and how she arrives at said truth with such beauty on the page (revise, revise, revise!). She speaks about her own fear of failure when she is writing, which gives readers a glimpse into the writing process we readers think just magically appears on the page.If you are already a reader of Karr’s works, know that AOM is like getting a "Behind the Scenes" at the end of your favorite movie. For me, she answered twenty plus years’ worth of questions I had about her three memoirs and it was, truly, magical. If you’ve ever wished you could attend one of her classes at Syracuse, you now have it in your hands! If this is your first Karr read, you have some catching up to do. Lucky you! (She also writes spectacular poetry!)

Excerpt from Modern Ships of WarAfter many years of neglect, the people of this country have awakened to the necessity of creating a modern fleet. Proud as they were of the Navy's achievements in the past, they failed for a long time to exhibit any interest in its present or future, and met all claims for its re-establishment by a denial of its usefulness, or by a lazy optimism of indifference which smilingly put the question by. Indeed, at one time, the popular solicitude disappeared completely, and outside of the service there was manifested neither an alarm at its degeneracy nor an appreciation of the dangers this made possible. With an apathy inexplicable upon any rational grounds, the notes of warning sounded by experts were unheeded, and the law-makers contented themselves by pinning their faith to what they called "the creative possibilities of American genius." They accepted this fallacy as a fact, they made this phrase a fetich, and with a fatuous hope believed it could, by some occult inspiration, in the event of sudden, sharp, and short war, save them from the fighting-machines which twenty years of tireless experiment had perfected abroad. In the end, by a neatly balanced policy of pride and folly, the Navy was exhausted almost to dissolution. Then Congress lazily bestirred itself to action, and prescribed as a remedy three unarmored cruisers and a despatch-boat.Heroic treatment, not homœopathy, was needed; but, thanks to a naturally vigorous constitution, the bolus sufficed to lift the patient out of the throes, and to encourage him into a languid convalescence. Luckily, the vessels became a party question, and their historic tribulations did so much towards educating the nation that a public sentiment was aroused which made a modern navy possible. WOOLF’S FAMOUS ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF FEMALE AUTHORS By Steven H Propp Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English author, essayist, publisher, and writer of short stories, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 118-page Harper paperback edition.]She begins this 1929 book with the statement, “But, you say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction---what has that got to do with a room of one’s own? I will try to explain… I should never be able to fulfill what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer---to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece forever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point---a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved.” (Pg. 3-4)She reveals that when she attempted to enter a library to read a manuscript of Thackeray, she was told “that ladies are only admitted to the library if accompanied by a Fellow of the College, or furnished with a letter of introduction. That a famous library has been cursed by a woman is a matter of complete indifference to a famous library. Venerable and calm, with all its treasures safe locked within its breast, it sleeps complacently and will, so far as I am concerned, so sleep for ever. Never again will I wake those echoes, never will I ask for that hospitality again, I vowed as I descended the steps in anger.” (Pg. 7-8)She recalls a professor: “Possibly when the professor insisted a little too emphatically upon the inferiority of women, he was concerned not with their inferiority, but with his own superiority. That was what he was protecting rather hot-headedly and with too much emphasis, because it was a jewel to him of the rarest price… Without self-confidence we are as babes in the cradle. And how can we generate this imponderable quality…? By thinking that other people are inferior to oneself. By feeling that one has some innate superiority---it may be wealth, or rank, a straight nose, or the portrait of a grandfather by Romney---for there is no end to the pathetic devices of the human imagination---over other people.” (Pg. 34-35) She adds, “Under the spell of that illusion… They start the day confident… they say to themselves as they go into the room, I am the superior of half the people here, and it is thus that they speak with that self-confidence, that self-assurance, which have had such profound consequences in public life and lead to such curious mores in the margin of the private mind.” (Pg. 36-37)She rhetorically asks, “it is a perennial puzzle why no woman wrote a word of that extraordinary literature when every other man, it seemed, was capable of song or sonnet. What were the conditions in which women lived, I asked myself.” (Pg. 43) She powerfully points out, “I could not help thinking, as I looked at the works of Shakespeare… that… it would have been impossible … for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine… what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith… She was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar and logic… She picked up a book now and then… But then her parents came in and told her to mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about books and papers… She had the quickest fancy, a gift like her brother’s, for the tune of words. Like him, she had a taste for the theater. She stood at the stage door; she wanted to act, she said. Men laughed in her face… She could get no training in her craft… That, more or less, is how the story would run … if a woman in Shakespeare’s day had had Shakespeare’s genius…” (Pg. 48-50)She suggests, “[In fiction] All these relationships between women… are too simple. So much has been left out, unattempted… almost without exception they are shown in their relation to men. It is strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen’s day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex. And how small a part of a woman’s life is that; and how little can a man know even of that when he observes it through the black or rosy spectacles which sex puts upon his nose.” (Pg. 86)She concludes, “it is far more important at the moment to know how much money women had and how many rooms than to theorize about their capacities… you may object that in all this I have made too much of the importance of material things. Even allowing a generous margin for symbolism, that five hundred a year stands for the power to contemplate, that a lock on the door means the power to think for oneself…” (Pg. 109-110) She adds, “Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor… from the beginning of time. Women have had less intellectual freedom than the sons of Athenian slaves. Women, then, have not had a dog’s chance of writing poetry.
