34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. A must for pig ownership. By k. powers Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.

We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

The size is important because, when you can’t put it down, it’ll fit snugly right into your hand.It’s the marriage of modernity and magic- inherent in glass itself- that I found so compelling in this well-written piece by John Garrison. The beginning of the book focuses on the ubiquitous and almost secretive nature of modern glass; not just on surfaces and screens, but also snaking behind the scenes in the very fiberglass and fiber optics surrounding us in walls, wires, and machines.The older, more magical sense of glass is revealed to us also. With the chapter dissecting the Freaky Friday type-magic of Google Glass giving us a selective view of “lives of not-so-quiet inspiration” and “the promise of stepping out of our bodies” and seeing literally through others eyes…The unnerving possibilities and probabilities are exposed and I loved the comparison to the movie Strange Days. The future is now, and I find myself more than a little concerned.Glass as a product, a description, a noun, a metaphor, and a symbol. So much in a tiny package.

For example, he compares Roland Barthes’ photograph of his mother as a young girl with Shakespeare’s Sonnet 3, which states, “You are thy mother’s glass and she is thee.”This book includes such contemporary subjects as Corning’s “A Day Made of Glass,” which imagines the future of interactive glass; Google Glass, which was tested by celebrities and everyday people alike; and Microsoft’s HoloLens, which applied holograms to the real world. By David Lilligren This reprint of the 1909 classic should be on the shelf of every serious homesteader. Farming is hard work, and this book will teach you how to save both time and money to get the job done. In this little gem you'll learn how to make your own tools for your workshop, how to build things for around the house, for the barns, and for your livestock, in addition to other devices for your garden and orchard, including a section that discusses fence-making and gate-making. Several pages are devoted to building a farmhouse (including the floor plan for my wife's "dream house"), barns, and other outbuildings. This book also makes for very entertaining reading. Peppered throughout are worthwhile quotes from famous (and not-so-famous) farmers from the past. I'm glad I found this book. I hope you will be, too!

I read through it last night and am 110% convinced that the ideas in this book will cut my workload in half and make my life better when I move to the farm. Starr A number of important lessons call out from the pages of this engrossing and rather sad story - not the least of which is that Francis Gary Powers got shafted, folks. Plain and simple.During his captivity, the press severely tarnished his reputation by publishing sometimes gross misinformation about him and his mission. Some of these misconceptions thrive to this day.How many people still believe he was under CIA orders to use his infamous suicide pin? (he wasn't even required to carry it) How many people still think he told the Soviets too much? (his handling of the interrogations was very shrewd; he cleverly protected the most important secrets - even after our reckless press published information that threatened to undermine his strategy) How many people really think he was considering defecting to the USSR after release from Soviet prison? (never crossed his mind) Or that he didn't activate the U-2's destruct mechanism because it was allegedly set to destroy both plane and pilot? (completely false rumor started by the Soviets)Perhaps the saddest part is that after his release, the CIA could have done more to clear his name. But they apparently back-peddled from this effort because clearing his name meant tarnishing theirs (For starters, Powers states that the CIA did not train their U-2 pilots on what to do if captured. These days, practically all military pilots receive such training).Several years ago I paid for a pristine first edition of this 1970 book, signed by Powers and co-author Curt Gentry (Powers died in 1977). At first I thought I'd paid too much. After reading it, I think I got a bargain.

In 1970, I purchased the Operation Overflight book and still have my copy. However, in recent years, the government has released more information on this period of American history. We now know such things as how many flights there were, the objectives of those flights, and other pertinent information about the U-2 program. But the personal information is only found in the book by Powers and in detailing his role in the CIA. He describes how he behaved and how he was treated while in captivity and upon his return to the US. All of this gives us a picture of a private American citizen (and former military man) who was thrust into the Cold War and the controversy about the U-2. I visited the grave site in Arlington Cemetary and just stood there remembering how this brave young man did what he did and suffered what he did for our nation. When the new reprint comes out, be sure to read it as it will, no doubt, reveal much more abour the man, the plane, and the mission.

The Third Point By Gabriel Toscana Videgaray With respect to the "Cold War" we usually know the official versions from both the government of the USA and of the USSR. Powers book is extremely interesting because it gives you a private account of somebody that was deeply involved in the U-2 Cold War incident: a third point of view. A point of view that has no "agenda" to push through.Powers description of his life in prison had for me an almost spiritual meaning. After reading what he went through, I felt grateful for what I have. He mentions, for example, that in prison work is cherished: he and his cell mate fought to have the privilege of cleaning their cell.On the other hand, his actual experience in jail was very different from what you see in the movies. There was no violence, no torture, no conspiracy to escape. In almost two years he had a chance to speak with only one other prisoner: his cell mate. It was the most boring experience imaginable, so much so that some prisoners lost their minds.It is difficult not to feel contempt for Dwight Eisenhower who after ordering the flight completely abandoned Powers to his fate. Eisenhower cared much more for his "prestige" than for any person but in the end his prestige went down the drain anyway when his involvement in the U-2 affair was finally known.Another player that has dramatically dropped in stature for me is Robert Kennedy. His callousness is hard to believe. After all the suffering Powers went through in the USSR for doing his duty for the CIA, R. Kennedy was willing to try him for treason with the only purpose of advancing his political career! The politics surrounding this event are sickening: JFK had invited Powers to meet him at the White House but at the last moment the offer was withdrawn.In the end, no president or high level politician did anything to obtain Powers'release from the USSR. It was his father whom he had to thank for his release.Obviously, the CIA did not want this book to be published and 8 years had to pass before it finally saw the light.I fully recommend the book as it gives you an insight as to how history is really made by real people, in real places, performing real duties.

Great for Shakespeare newbies and veterans alike By Mya Gosling Having spent a great part of my life engaged with Shakespeare's works, I didn't really think I would find anything new here, but Edmondson's thoughtful analysis and clear presentation raised points that have enhanced my appreciation of Shakespeare. His penultimate chapter on "Encountering Shakespeare" was particularly fascinating, as it discussed the importance of performance and theatre-going.The portion of Edmondson's book that I got the most out of was his section on speaking Shakespeare, in which he gives advice on how to speak Shakespeare's language, specifically his sonnets. I have always been enamored of Shakespeare's language, but, being an inherently frivolous person, I have never really slowed down enough to properly consider and appreciate its poetry. I have also rarely read any of the sonnets, and never out loud. However, Edmondson's six-point guide to reading a sonnet out loud was so clear that I am tempted to make sonnet recitation a regular part of my day.The bottom line is that Edmondson has managed to compose a introduction to Shakespeare that genuinely enhances appreciation of Shakespeare not only in newcomers to his work, but in rather more world-weary Shakespearean veterans as well. I shall definitely be returning to this book as my own journey in Shakespeare continues.

Nor will it tell you the stories of the plays (except a few, incidentally, in passing).But it will, I hope, explain what kind of writer Shakespeare is, where his work came from, why it matters, what he means to me, and why I think he is worth spending time with (though there is never any moral obligation to like his work).”The above comes from this book by Rev Paul Edmondson. He is Head of Research and Knowledge as well as Director of the Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival for The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. He is also a trustee of The British Shakespeare Association.(Stratford-upon-Avon is a town in Warwickshire, England, on the River Avon. It is the birthplace of playwright and poet William Shakespeare, 1564 to 1616.)This book is touted as an “introduction” to Shakespeare (but curiously not by the author himself) but it seems to me to be so much more. As this book tells us about Shakespeare, I found it to be informed, witty, up-to-date, and well-written. It seems to whet the reader’s appetite for Shakespeare, not satiate it. This is good as Shakespeare should never be a duty.The first chapter presents something of what Shakespeare’s life and career were like, the places he spent time in, some of the people he knew, and the world in which he lived. It gives an historical overview of the FACTS about his life avoiding assumptions. The next chapter looks at his writing process in the theatre (which was the shaping force of his imagination). Chapter three considers what he wrote. Shakespeare was a poet and thinker who wrote enduring plays as well as a dramatist who wrote equally-enduring poetry.The fourth chapter details Shakespeare’s power as a dramatic poet through his depiction of thought and emotion by considering six topics: love, war, history, mortality, transgression, and forgiveness. The penultimate chapter considers performance as a way of encountering Shakespeare, the importance of theatre reviewing, and suggests how we might place ourselves as close as possible to his language by reading a Shakespeare sonnet aloud to ourselves. The final chapter answers to question “Why Shakespeare?”This book is illustrated with drawings throughout that enhance the narrative.Though not stated explicitly, this book may have been written to commemorate the death of Shakespeare 400 years ago. (He died April 23, 1616.)Finally, the very beginning of this book presents a forty-six entry chronological listing of Shakespeare’s works with dates. While this is okay, I think it would have been more informative to divide this list into categories such as tragedies, comedies, histories, sonnets, lost plays, etc. Beside each entry in a particular category, important information could have been given.For example, under the category “Comedies,” you might have this entry: “The Tempest (1610-11, Tragicomic Romance),” under “Tragedies,” you might have the entry “Troilus and Cressida (1602, Problem Play, Minor Play),” and under “The Sonnets,” you would have “1582-1609, 154 written.” (A sonnet is a type of poem of 14 lines.)In conclusion, read this book to find out for yourself what all the fuss is about and if Shakespeare REALLY deserves his reputation.
