Over ten years, she handled, raised, cared for and nursed these amazing creatures, and within these pages you will come to know the characters; laugh at their sense of fun, mourn at their passing – and learn to love them as she does. "Those fascinated by the wolf will find Among the Wolves, Memoirs of a Wolf Handler irresistible." - Robyn Youl, Librarian, Geelong Obedience Dog Club

"fascinating ... interesting and unique reading" - Trevor Turner

"Those fascinated by the wolf will find [this book] irresistible ... a rich resource for dog lovers, researchers, writers and teachers." - Geelong Obedience Dog Club

"extremely thought provoking" - Psychology Today

"The importance of the book lies beneath the long guard hairs and fleecy lining. It is a deep and intelligent understanding that animals play such an important part in our ecology. It's a powerful plea that we reassess our own impact on nature. It begs us to revaluate the status of animals and respectfully suggests ways forward for improvement. 'Among the Wolves' is an only-one-of-its-kind type of book. Rich in anecdote and information, it has something for everyone who cares about human relationship with the natural world. By writing it Toni Shelbourne has performed a service to wolf-kind everywhere." - Wolf Watch UK

"Among the Wolves was something I just couldn't put down. A true account, reflection and reality if ever there was one about the life of a wolf carer, guide and healer. In every way, Toni manages to grasp, entice and emotionally connect you to the wolves that were fortunate enough to be in her care ..." - Dr Isla Fishburn Conservation Biology

"'Among the Wolves' is an only-one-of-its-kind type of book. Rich in anecdote and information, it has something for everyone who cares about human relationship with the natural world. By writing it Toni Shelbourne has performed a service to wolf-kind everywhere." - Tony Haighway

"Elizabeth Abbott's "Dogs and Underdogs: Finding Happiness at Both Ends of the Leash" and Toni Shelbourne's "Among the Wolves" are excellent reads. Both books are filled with personal stories about these amazing beings and show how we can rescue and help them and they can in turn rescue and help us. Both also raise numerous questions about human-animal relationships. - Marc Bekoff Ph.D. in Animal Emotions

"Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, "Among the Wolves: Memoirs of a Wolf Handler" is a unique and inherently fascinating read. Very highly recommended. - Midwest Book Review

"From the first page of this book the reader is drawn in to the secret world of the wolf and its relationship and interaction with Toni Shelbourne. A very special bond was built up over the years and successive wolves have benefitted from Toni's expert knowledge and calm and practical approach. All this is described in this impressive little book and anyone wanting in depth knowledge of her relationship with them all will not be disappointed. It is a diary of events that once you start you will be unable to put down as you enter the world of the captive wolf. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this as a retired director of the UKWCT and knowing all the characters involved." - Anne CarterAdministrator - The Labrador Lifeline Trust

"Having worked with both wild and domestic canines for several years, Toni Shelbourne's book Among the Wolves, was something I just couldn't put down. A true account, reflection and reality if ever there was one about the life of a wolf carer, guide and healer. In every way, Toni manages to grasp, entice and emotionally connect you to the wolves that were fortunate enough to be in her care. Clowns, aggressors, peace-makers, pups, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers: Toni gives a rare yet much needed insight into the emotions, bonds, rivalry, and ruses that wolves show, and how these sensitive, caring, compassionate and cooperative animals can break or heal the heart of a human in an instant. As Toni explains, wolves mourn, pine, call for and can have a deep sadness for the loss of a family member who they have a strong emotional attachment to. On the other side, they can intimidate, bully and exclude those who are simply not accepted, both human and wolf alike. If anything, I hope Among the Wolves promotes the need to understand and conserve our wild wolf brethren and that their emotional, social, caring and loving natures can be acknowledged and celebrated." - Dr. Isla Fishburn, Kachina Canine Communication

"The author's staggering intimacy and understanding of her subjects is the heart and soul of this evocative memoir, which is a must read for anyone interested in this species, a predecessor of that dog sitting alongside you." - Seattle Kennel Club

About the Author

Toni Shelbourne has worked with dogs and wild canids for over twenty five years. A Tellington TTouch Practitioner, and author of The Truth about Wolves and Dogs, also published by Hubble and Hattie, Toni is also an environmental educator, lecturer, and presenter. Toni's work as a Tellington TTouch Practitioner led her to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust, where she worked with a pack of socialised wolves. For ten years she observed wolves on a daily basis, progressing to become a Senior Wolf Handler and Education Officer for the organisation. Her observations helped her develop a unique insight into wolf behavior, and led her to question the ingrained ideas about the alpha theory with dogs: ideas that were often in conflict with her own observations and knowledge. The result was her first book, The Truth about Wolves & Dogs. This, her second book, takes the reader on the very personal journey of Toni's life with the wolves.

A definition of love: allowing others the ultimate freedom to be their own selves By Michael M This book is a heartfelt introduction to some captive wolves in England. It's certainly worth your reading, although the use of chained captives as ambassadors is an issue with which you may well disagree. Respect and tolerance is different than covetous desire of a strange primate to control autonomus other li ves, especially in a highly intelligent and emotional animal, designed by nature to balance the Northern systems of life on earth.

The characters & their stories are both charming and inspiring: written with compassion and humor. (Whose idea was it to get black wolves?). It was also fun to read the King's English again. ( worked with the UKMoD in70's & 80's). Suffice to say: I laughed; I cried; I learned.Andrew Dietrich

Well Written, Humorous, and Entertaining By Charlie Glover This proports to be a study of rat catching, and a manual of study for those interested in the profession. It is far more than that. Barkley writes with humor and his stories flow with grace. A British man who traveled the world with his work in youth and became an author later in life, Barkley is a very good, overlooked writer of his generation. His five books are very hard to find now but are worth the search. This one tells how to raise ferrets and train them to chase rats. You put the ferret in the rat hole, he chases the rats out, the dogs catch the rats, you charge 2 pence or whatever price for the rats. Barkley creates several fictitional scenarios and tells you creative yet mostly outdated ways to catch rats. As a youth, he did use the ferret/dog method, but for entertainment with his friends, as he details in his book "My Boyhood." The book unwinds toward the end and he drifts into a narrative about his favorite dogs and how he came to own them. He says a youth could select rat catching as a good profession, not like a lawyer or politician. Good stuff.Point of interest: Crispin Glover used this book at the basis for his artistic collage book "Rat Catching," which uses some of this text to form a similar yet different story. Check it out, it is the book that turned me on to Henry Barkley.

For exterminators, poets, philosophers, and lovers of durable ephemera By Teh Arbitrageur This is a fascinating and unique artifact from around 1900, and formed the basis of a book by Crispin Hellion Glover (actor, author, bon vivant). Though superficially a book on rat extermination for school children, it's extremely well-crafted prose frequently enters the realm of "low poetry", and its philosophical meanderings are often truly though-provoking.

It does, however, give some insight into professional rat-catchers from the Victorian Era. It would be most interesting to readers looking for historical methods and writings from a rat-catcher.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. By far the best in the field By Andrew Rankine This is the second edition of a very successful book which first appeared in 2006. I said then that it was a most welcome addition to the library of any manager active in this field and ought to be the standard work in HSEQ auditing; this second edition only confirms me in this opinion.A thriving and constantly improving HSEQ culture depends on those in control questioning its condition, measuring its successes and failures and defining routes towards development. Much in the way that a financial audit determines the monetary health of a management system, HSEQ audits test these elements of performance. Some audit systems are one-size-fits-all prescriptions, which, although successful in many applications, cannot be said to succeed in all, simply because management structures vary so much. Indeed, earlier audit systems tended to give a false sense of security precisely because there was a fundamental mismatch between the management system under scrutiny and the audit system chosen. Hence Stephen Asbury’s approach to letting the management structure determine the what and how of auditing, and that is its major strength.‘Risk’ is defined herein as the scale of any type of impact on an organisation’s objectives, i.e. very widely. The purpose of this book is therefore to instruct the reader in how to focus on especial classes of risk, how best to interrogate the management system responsible for that aspect, and what to make of the outcome(s).The book comprises 10 main chapters plus 5 appendices. The novice auditor and senior general manager or director would be well advised to simply start at the beginning and wade in, for there is much to be gained from Asbury’s understanding of the current business environment and how the structure and control functions of an organisation operate. If you’re familiar with modern management studies, then you might skip the first two chapters, but there are plenty of inset boxes with nuggets of good sense and advice that you won’t want to miss. The crux of the matter starts in the next section, where it is explained why, how and by whom and auditing culture comes about in an organisation. This leads into a discussion of the interactions between auditor and those individuals who control the aspects of management under scrutiny. This is important if the audit process is to elicit the best and most accurate data on which future strategy can be confidently based. The “Audit Adventure” is the author’s term for the thought processes around the dynamics used by auditors. This steers auditors through the major steps of the audit. Since an audit is a project like any other, it comprises a series of inter-related activities with a timescale, budget and resource allocation, plus clearly understood objectives. The remainder of the main sections of the book detail the principles and practices of this audit adventure. If you have been appointed as lead auditor, chapters 6 – 10 will lead you by the hand, telling you how to approach the tasks involved, how to get the best from your team, and to prepare and execute the best programme you can. All the important aspects of this vital process are dealt with expertly, and with good humour. Good preparation is, naturally, vital for a potentially complex project such as an audit. The audit team and especially the lead auditor must understand what is expected of them, the audit processes they will use and how the deliverables agreed will be uncovered. As Asbury says, “the key to a successful audit is a thoroughly prepared audit team”. Once the groundwork has been laid, the audit team will, hopefully, have unearthed a representative sample of significant risks for inclusion in the audit work plan. The actual conduct of the audit is, quite properly, the major section of this book and the author explains in some detail the variables inherent in these processes, how difficulties can be minimised and focus retained. It’s all most helpful, with case studies, tips and pithy asides to guide the reader towards a deeper understanding. Of greatest use to the auditee will be the formal report and perhaps a presentation giving the conclusions of the audit. Where immediate risks or major non-conformancies have been uncovered, the lead auditor needs to be prepared to help in arriving at workable solutions. This is all part and parcel of the audit process. All these aspects are covered in enough detail to let the prospective lead auditor understand what is required, and conversely what a director of an auditee company can and should expect. The graphic design is superb with inset case studies to illustrate important points and tips garnered from the author’s personal experience, Special mention must be made of Paul Richardson’s cartoons. Auditing may not be the ‘sexiest’ topic for humour, but these really do work well and don’t detract from the seriousness of the subject. There is so much to enjoy and admire in this book. The introductory chapters are as good a summary of the nature of business risk as one can have without straying into magnum opus territory for management studies undergraduates. That this is achieved without recourse to ‘management speak’ is quite remarkable. The writing style throughout is accessible and the layout leads the eye to the salient matters of each topic. There are, in addition to the main text, five main appendices plus lots of extras, not the least of which is the useful website supported by the publisher at: [...] There is also a good index, which makes life a lot easier.Auditing ‘how-to’ guides tend not to be the most thrilling reads. One reads them because one wants to understand the process or to pass an exam. This one, however, actively draws the reader into an understanding of how important these activities are to the health of an organisation so that one appreciates that without such processes, success or failure would be pretty much left to chance. In today’s business environment, no senior manager should be content with that. This book will tell you how to find out what could go wrong and how to address such challenges. This second edition remains the ‘go to’ handbook for those who aspire to drive a prosperous and thriving business and I highly recommend it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended By Bookworm In 2007, I wrote a review on the first edition of this book. That was an excellent read, and now I’m able to tell you about this new edition. The ideas of the first book have been extended, and there are many more tips and ideas, and much better illustrations. I have worked in risk management for many years, but this book brought a whole new perspective to the role, importance and benefits of management system auditing. Asbury's approach is very well expressed, and is supported throughout by dozens and dozens of case studies and examples from his years’ of auditing experience. At the back of the book is a selection of feedback from Asbury’s auditor training courses – it seems he is as good live as he is in his writing. The main themes from the book emerge as 90 'A' factors in an Appendix – these alone are worth the price of the book. This book will be immeasurably useful to aspiring, novice and experienced auditors alike. And to managers perhaps about to be audited. As I said of the first edition, I cannot praise this new edition too highly - it deserves to remain the standard work in this area.

By close reader The subject is very interesting, but the author writes in that inflated, pretentious academic "style" that's so prevalent among critics of the arts these days. It's as if he goes out of his way to be obtuse, verbose and verbally ostentatious so that he will be the center of attention rather than his subject. Too bad.

As editor of the quarterly Salmagundi for the past fifty years, Robert Boyers has been on the cutting edge of developments in politics, culture, and the arts. Reflecting on his collaborations and quarrels with some of the twentieth century's most transformative writers, artists, and thinkers, Boyers writes a wholly original intellectual memoir that rigorously confronts selected aspects of contemporary society.

Organizing his chapters around specific ideas, Boyers anatomizes the process by which they fall in and out of fashion and often confuse those who most ardently embrace them. In provocative encounters with authority, fidelity, "the other," pleasure, and a wide range of other topics, Boyers tells colorful stories about his own life and, in the process, studies the fate of ideas in a society committed to change and ill equipped to assess the losses entailed in modernity. Among the writers who appear in these pages are Susan Sontag and V. S. Naipaul, Jamaica Kincaid and J. M. Coetzee, as well as figures drawn from all walks of life, including unfaithful husbands, psychoanalysts, terrorists, and besotted beauty lovers.

The Fate of Ideas: Seductions, Betrayals, AppraisalsBy Robert Boyers

Review

The Fate of Ideas is a brilliant, highly original, and delightful book that achieves a unique balance between criticism and personal essay, revealing the author himself as both a decisive thinker and an appealingly flawed, divided human being. Looking at a wide range of ideas by peeling away attendant presuppositions and contradictions, Robert Boyers argues with friends, intellectual heroes, and respected elders while examining his own prejudices. Throughout we find ourselves in the company of a first-rate mind alert to changes in intellectual fashion and the quickness with which politically or aesthetically 'correct' assumptions harden into received ideas.

(Phillip Lopate, director (nonfiction) of the Writing Program, Columbia University School of the Arts, and author of Getting Personal: Selected Essays)

In a dance that is both demanding and exhilarating, Robert Boyers engages thinkers and ideas, insisting there are things worth arguing about that are larger and grander than the standard scholarly or academic discourse can get at. An elegant and courageous book.

(Mary Gordon, Mcintosh Professor, Barnard College, author of The Company of Women)

This book is a combination of memoir and cultural criticism, though all of the chapters shed light on the protean character of the author, a prominent cultural critic and―perhaps above all―the founder and longtime editor of the quarterly Salmagundi. Whatever form they take―some chapters are deeply personal, others are largely polemical―all are thought experiments, essays often ironic and self-deprecating, Emersonian in the sense that Robert Boyers is unabashed in his 'appetite for masters and masterpieces' that can become 'a constitutive aspect of my very being.' A superb and singular work.

(James Miller, director of liberal studies, graduate faculty, New School for Social Research, author of The Passion of Michel Foucault)

An attractive, original, subtle, and heartening book that combines the methods of the moral and personal essay with informal literary and cultural criticism.

(Richard Locke, Columbia University, author of Critical Children: The Use of Childhood in Ten Great Novels)

The 12 literary essays collected in this volume are bottomless wells of provocation and insight.... Readers who crave rich food for thought will find much to savor in this volume.

(Publisher's Weekly (starred review))

Boyers's intellectual rigor and literary acuity showcase the life's work of an individual deeply committed to the liberal arts. A timely collection.... Essential.

A pleasant and thoughtful book By Amazon Customer Robert Boyers' comes across as so pleasant and engaging throughout that it would be hard not to enjoy these twelve essays. Each essay is a small meditation on a large topic, examples including Beauty, Fidelity or Modernism. Boyers illustrates each of these with anecdotes from his own life and, more prominently, with excerpts from literature and musings from other great thinkers. The most immediate impression of Boyers is of someone extremely well-read. At times the book gives the impression of an autumn stroll through campus with a thoughtful and kind professor. He is ruminating on some of life's big questions and inviting you to consider these questions yourself. Boyers clearly has thought deeply about the relationships between people and what we may owe one another. Reading this book was a reminder that there are great intellects in the world that are not necessarily sharp or condescending. Highly recommended.

A radio road trip across America features some of the nuttiest callers ever to phone the show.

Each week millions of radio listeners tune in to National Public Radio's Car Talk. A high point of every show is the call-in segment, when listeners phone in for advice and regale hosts Click and Clack with tales of their own automotive misadventures.

Like Dave from Bemidji, Minnesota, who drives his Chevy Cavalier home from Alaska when it already has 350,000 miles on the odometer. And Dinesh, who strolls across Death Valley. Rather than worry about buzzards, he's concerned about how his car will hold up in the heat.

Christy wants to know if she fried her dad's Citation. Adrienne frets that a load of rocks might crush her Saab. Single guy John wonders if he should tidy up his car for a first date or reveal its trashy self. And when Ann's husband travels from Georgia to Florida to get his vasectomy reversed, Ann drives like a banshee to bring him back home. Ever since, their Caravan makes strange grinding noises.

It seems that lunatics aren't confined to Car Talk Plaza. They're everywhere, and they're dialing the phone. Four hilarious radio shows celebrate the land of the free, home of the wacko.

My husband and I use this to lift the stress and get a much needed laugh. If the stories don't get to you, these two guys laughing will make you want to laugh along. If you have someone that you know could use a laugh - get this for them. This is highly recommended!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. More delicious fun from the Car Talk guys! By D. Lowenthal This is a 4-CD collection of hilarious segments from the NPR Car Talk show. The stories are always entertaining as well as laugh-inducing. The calls are varied ... from the guy wondering if he should clean up his very messy car before taking a girl out on a date, to the young lady who feels guilty for destroying her father's car engine 15 years ago (when she was 16 years old), to the gal whose car engine dies everytime she drives to a high altitude, they are all thought-provoking automotive tales. The Click and Clack laugh and joke and inform their way through the CDs. A great, family-friendly collection. I listened to them all, and then shared some of the best stories with my teenaged son, and my husband. We all thoroughly enjoyed the set.

Defence Expenditure constitutes an important part of the Government expenditure and needs detailed economic analysis. There are not many detailed studies analysing defence expenditure in India from the economic point of view. The economic issues have gained relative supremacy over all the other issues in the recent past, especially after the end of the allocation of expenditure and determinants of defence budget assume greater importance. This is especially true in the case of developing countries, which have to manage development along with stability. In the present study the attempt is made to analyse some of the important issues related to defence expenditure through an empirical economic analysis.

Comprehensive coverage on defence budgeting By Rakesh The book caters to research scholars as well as general public with keen interest in the countries defence. It gives the entire process of planning of defence expenditure the bottle necks and suggestions for for a comprehensive security policy. Many of her suggestions for long term sustenance of expenditure through right sizing though hotly debated in the present hierarchy will eventually find acceptance. An excellent research on financing our security imperatives.

The Thing. Daredevil. Captain Marvel. The Human Fly. Drawing on DC and Marvel comics from the 1950s to the 1990s and marshaling insights from three burgeoning fields of inquiry in the humanities―disability studies, death and dying studies, and comics studies―José Alaniz seeks to redefine the contemporary understanding of the superhero. Beginning in the Silver Age, the genre increasingly challenged and complicated its hypermasculine, quasi-eugenicist biases through such disabled figures as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and the Doom Patrol.

Alaniz traces how the superhero became increasingly vulnerable, ill, and mortal in this era. He then proceeds to a reinterpretation of characters and series―some familiar (Superman), some obscure (She-Thing). These genre changes reflected a wider awareness of related body issues in the postwar United States as represented by hospice, death with dignity, and disability rights movements. The persistent highlighting of the body’s “imperfection” comes to forge a predominant aspect of the superheroic self. Such moves, originally part of the Silver Age strategy to stimulate sympathy, enhance psychological depth, and raise the dramatic stakes, developed further in such later series as The Human Fly, Strikeforce: Morituri, and the landmark graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel, all examined in this volume. Death and disability, presumed routinely absent or denied in the superhero genre, emerge to form a core theme and defining function of the Silver Age and beyond.

Death, Disability, and the Superhero: The Silver Age and BeyondBy José Alaniz

Review

“From the sensitive, close reading of the opening pages to the urgent arguments of the conclusion, Death, Disability and the Superhero compels attention. Intellectually alert, politically engaged, and often emotionally moving, this is a major work of cultural criticism.”

―Ben Saunders, author of Do The Gods Wear Capes? Spirituality, Fantasy, and Superheroes

“Alaniz does things with the superhero that no other critic has done―and yet does them so well, so piercingly, that superhero studies will have to reckon with him before it can go forward. Death, Disability, and the Superhero proves that a work can be breathtakingly original and yet persuade us that it is absolutely necessary―that it fills a gap that until now we had not recognized, and redefines the subject for us in ways that reverberate backwards through history. Not just superhero studies but also the very ways we think about ability, difference, and mortality―that’s what’s up for grabs here. In fact Alaniz has gifted us with a field-redefining work.”

―Charles Hatfield, author of Alternative Comics: An Emerging Literature and Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Broad death and disability study of superheroes By Earl Jose Alaniz has written an extremely ambitious work in Death, Disability, and the Superhero. The first part of the book focuses primarily on disability and the superhero while, from chapter seven on death and the superhero takes center stage. As with any work that encompasses such a broad range of thought, there is a need for some basic assumptions to be made explicit from the beginning so that readers will understand how the writer will use and interpret some concepts. Unfortunately it is precisely in this introductory area where it seemed the scope of the study prevented Alaniz from clearly linking his premises and thus set up the rest of the book. This is unfortunate because the following chapters are very well researched and presented. While I was initially more interested in the disability studies sections rather than those addressing death and mortality, I felt the latter chapters were better organized and presented. Often in the early chapters there were analyses which were quite effective as far as they went but tended to overlook intersections where additional factors also come into play. For instance the contrast between disabled and super-abled bodies could benefit from also addressing racial and gender issues. Let me say, however, that I don't consider this a particularly significant negative since the book touches on so many aspects of death and disability studies. One of the most valuable aspects of this work will be the future scholarship it will help to launch, furthering analyses begun here as well as filling gaps between what is and is not addressed here.I anticipate revisiting most if not all of this book again in the future and expect to find it referenced widely in future research. This may not appeal to every casual comic fan, which is understandable, but I think many will also find new avenues into their favorite comics through the act of wrestling with some of this material. Scholars in the death and disability fields as well as popular culture and comics/graphic novels studies will find many useful points to ponder and address in future work.Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

By Michele Lee Death, Disability and the Superhero by Jose AlanizUniversity Press of Missouri, 2014ISBN: 1628461179Available: Print and ebook This book is a beast. A heavy brick of text with a massive amount of research behind it, it's not for casual comic book fans. But if you're passionate about comic books and superheroes as a serious art form, a reflection of culture as much as any other fiction genre, this is a book for you. Alaniz starts out compiling themes and commentary on Golden Age superheroes and the ideals of culture they represented at the time. But the real meat is in his own research and take on the Silver Age of comics, the rise of Marvel and the expansion of superheroes from Ubermench to complicated characters. Highly recommended because of the rarity of such studies on superheroes and disability culture. Contains: discussion of violence, rape, and war

" ... try to sound like you know what you're doing even when you don't" By Ginny "When the world goes to hell, make stuff up that sounds reasonable, talk faster, and try to sound like you know what you're doing even when you don't."Part fun read, part expose, all dead on honest look at what it's like to be an air traffic controller. The book does tell all - the good, the bad, and the stuff that is both all rolled up together. Dave has a twisted sense of humor and an easy going writing style that makes this book an engaging read.

An enlightening look at what goes into air traffic control, sometimes humorous, often times frightening. Not sure if knowing what goes on behind the scenes makes a person want to climb into an airplane. Mr. Larson's first hand account of what it takes to do the job is riveting, even to someone who knows nothing about planes or flying. A well written, entertaining read with a message.

But if you love to learn about language and languages, The Art of Language Invention might put a different spin on the way you look at the subject.David Peterson explains in scholarly detail just what goes into inventing a language. He describes the people who invent languages for fun, and they are an enthusiastically geeky bunch. They strictly apply the rules of language, as we know them, to constructed languages (conlangs). They don't necessarily expect or want people to speak these new languages, the way Zamenhof wanted Esperanto to bring people together. For most of the conlangers, it's a cerebral exercise, like a game of chess or a SimCity community. There is even a small market for invented languages for TV and movie stories.Peterson's introduction and first chapter takes you into this world, but after that, it's a college level linguistics course, explaining how grammar and orthography, etc. work and how to apply it all to invented languages. This was a little deeper than I wanted to go, but the case studies that he sprinkles throughout describing how he solved various linguistic problems in creating languages, were quite interesting. He finishes up with a quick chapter on how to get involved in the conlang community and the job prospects for such skills (dim).(Thanks to Penguin First Reads for a digital review copy.)

I have been world building for sometime now with the intent of creating several languages that will develop within it. While I had what I thought were the fundamentals to get me started this book is the lighthouse indicating I was soon going to crash, but also is showing me the direction I should be headed (imagine a large neon arrow posted next to the lighthouse). This is spectacular and I cannot wait to finish my first reading and begin my second (this time with notetaking)!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I got more then I bargained for with this book By Cheryl Koch I got more then I bargained for with this book. While I have learned how Mr. Peterson wrote the Dothraki language for Game of Thrones; I have also learned a lot more about how everyone can read and use the same word in many different contexts. In addition, that there are so many ways to use your vocal range to produce a variety of different pronunciations and sounds. Which if you are a singer or an actor, I am sure you already know how to do the vocal exercises.Yes, I agree that this book does read like a text book but a very intriguing and informative book. I did not think I would like reading this book as much as I did. Also, the Case Studies that were featured in this book I found to be interesting and like added bonuses. Geared with this additional knowledge, I will now be watching movies, television shows, and books with more of a critical eye on the language used.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book is fascinating and easy to read By Bruce E. Mccall This is a detailed study of the United States industrial mobilization effort in World War I. The author, Benedict Crowell, was the US Assistant Secretary of War from 1917 to 1920. This book was originally published as “America’s Munitions 1917-1918” (c. 1919, 592 pages). However, this book (which repeats most of the previous chapters) adds another 170 pages and was originally printed in two volumes. The United States faced an enormous challenge in 1917. America remained neutral throughout the first two and a half years of war because they believed that the British, French and Russians could defeat the Germans without outside help. After officially joining the war, they were shocked to learn that the Allies were really on the edge of defeat. Within less than two years, the US Army, with less than two hundred thousand men, had grown to a fully modern and well equipped army of four million. Not only did America have to mobilize an army from almost nothing, but they also had to mobilize America’s industry. It took about a year before the new factories could start delivering the equipment to the Army. A majority of the contracts would not be finished until early 1919.This book examines the production of the many different types of supplies, weapons and other equipment needed to make a modern army. It covers the design and production of all kinds of weapons and ammunition, toxic gas and gas mask, air planes and airplane engines, balloons, wagons, motor vehicles a tanks, clothing and shoes, radios and field telephones, medical supplies and a host of other types of equipment. There are also chapters (not found in the previous book) on designing and building naval ordnance and escort ships. Each chapter is a self-contained story of one type of weapon or equipment. These chapters cover the history of the many details involved in the design and production of the topic. The book names the factories involved and list the numbers of items contracted for, produced by the end of the war and final production numbers. Most of these items never made it to the front lines before the war ended in November 1918. There are over two hundred photographs and charts. There is also an index. This book is fascinating and easy to read.Benedict Crowell wrote another equally interesting book “The Road to France, the Transportation of Troops and military Supplies 1917-1918” (c. 1921). This book is about the many problems of moving troops and supplies to the training centers, ports of embarkation and then on to France”.

The Androgyne in Early Modern France: Contextualizing the Power of GenderBy Marian Rothstein

Review

"Rothstein has written a masterful pre-history of the woman sovereign who could also act as a man by tracing the enabling figure of the classical and biblical androgyne through multiple strands of Renaissance culture. A magnificent feat of sleuthing that uncovers unsuspected wealth behind a recurring motif, this work tackles a real problem and makes a much-needed intervention in the topic of early modern gender. Written in confident and elegant prose, and laced with touches of wry humor, her book beautifully demonstrates how the Greek and Christian traditions continued to pollinate each other to create a surprising potential for action in the early modern world." - George Hoffman, Professor of French, University of Michigan, USA

"The Androgyne in Early Modern France is a fascinating, erudite, and engagingly written study of the hermaphrodite's more fortunate twin. Rothstein elucidates with acumen the figure's origins in Classical and Jewish sources and offers a compelling demonstration of the range and importance of the artistic, literary, and political ends to which it was deployed in the French Renaissance." - Gary Ferguson, Douglas Huntly Gordon Distinguished Professor of French, University of Virginia, USA

About the Author Marian Rothstein is Professor Emerita of French at Carthage College, USA. In addition to numerous articles, she is the author of Reading in the Renaissance: Amadis de Gaule and the Lessons of Memory and editor of Charting Change in Renaissance French Thought and Culture.

Reading was so important to Marcel Proust that it sometimes seems he was unable to create a personage without a book in hand. Everybody in his work reads: servants and masters, children and parents, artists and physicians. The more sophisticated characters find it natural to speak in quotations. Proust made literary taste a means of defining personalities and gave literature an actual role to play in his novels.   In this wonderfully entertaining book, scholar and biographer Anka Muhlstein, the author of Balzac’s Omelette, draws out these themes in Proust's work and life, thus providing not only a friendly introduction to the momentous In Search of Lost Time, but also exciting highlights of some of the finest work in French literature.

Review

"This gemlike exploration of the literary underpinnings of  A la recherche du temps perdu reveals a Marcel Proust who did not so much read books as "absorb" them." -The New Yorker"Anka Muhlstein, who most recently wrote about Balzac (Balzac's Omelette), here turns her attention to Proust's enthusiasms, antagonisms, and literary influences- a perfect subject during this centennial of Swann's Way.  That herself is French and was brought up in Paris and in a not dissimilar lycee system makes her a reader who is sensitive to nuances of style and echoes of older standard French authors." -Edmund White, New York Review of Books"With Monsieur Proust's Library, Anka Muhlstein has added another volume to the collection of splendid books about Proust. A woman of intellectual refinement, subtle understanding and deep literary culture…Ms. Muhlstein is an excellent provisioner of high-quality intellectual goods.” -Wall Street Journal"...Anka Muhlstein’s Monsieur Proust’s Library, which looks at In Search of Lost Time by way of the books that Proust himself read and the way they influenced both the book and its characters, has become a permanent addition to my Proust library, and is a must read both for Proustians and want-to-be Proustians alike...It’s a marvelous book." -Publishing Perspectives"Muhlstein shows admirable restraint, focusing on select topics to contextualize Proust’s work in an accessible way...It’s a quick read, and the tight focus and brisk, topical chapters offer an entrée to a work that is not always easy to penetrate." -The Coffin Factory"This engaging little volume looks at the writers and literary works that influenced Marcel Proust, a passionate reader whose characters often appear book-in-hand. A helpful introduction to A la recherche du temps perdu, this new work reveals the ways in which Proust’s favorite writers—Saint-Simon, Racine, Mme de Sévigné, Balzac, Baudelaire, Dostoyevsky—inform his magnum opus." -France Magazine"The author of Balzac’s Omelette offers another sensual appreciation of a classic author, this time submitting to the books that Proust loved...You don’t absolutely need to know In Search of Lost Time to read Muhlstein’s brisk little volume, a mini-biography that dissects the many literary influences of [Proust]." -The Daily Beast (Hot Reads)"[Muhlstein] is thoroughly versed not only in Proust’s life but also in his work; her knowledge of individual characters is especially striking...This biography is an easy and interesting read, even for the novice Proust scholar, and an excellent accompaniment to an In Search of Lost Time (re)read." -San Francisco Book Review"Muhlstein has ideas of her own about the way in which Proust not only dealt with the anxieties of influence but also brought to a head a long and rich tradition -- something one can scarcely imagine a writer doing today." -Gay and Lesbian Review

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. How did Proust read? As a child, like all of us: for the plot and characters. But even at a very young age he was outraged by the fact that grownups considered reading as something one did to amuse oneself. “My great-aunt,” he recalled in Days of Reading, “would say to me, ‘How can you go on amusing yourself with a book; it isn’t Sunday, you know!’ putting into the word ‘amusing’ an implication of childishness and waste of time.” For little Marcel, reading was not fun; it was traumatic. He cried at the end of every book and was unable to go to sleep, desolate at the idea of leaving the characters he had grown attached to: “These people for whom one has gasped or sobbed, one will know nothing more of them […] one would have so liked for the book to continue.”   Proust read as a moralist, in the sense that reading could lead to greater self-knowledge, a salutary discipline sometimes necessary to shock a lazy mind into action. And he read as a novelist, an artisan of the written word, endlessly analyzing the style and technique of other authors, whether he liked their work or not. Finally, Proust read as a homosexual, extremely sensitive to all transgressions and ambiguities of gender.   The scope of his reading was too vast to allow for a list of favorites. All the writers who are important to the characters in the novel are French, but Proust, although he did not read English with ease, had a special affinity for British and American literature and was greatly influenced by them. “It is curious that in all the different genres, from George Eliot to Hardy, from Stevenson to Emerson, there is no literature which has had as much hold on me as English or American literature. Germany, Italy, very often France leave me indifferent but two pages of The Mill on the Floss reduce me to tears,” he wrote.

There are chapters about what Proust read, both French and foreign books, what his characters read and how well they understood it and what characters in literature Proust's characters were based on. At the end there is a chapter on Proust's satire of the Goncourt Brothers.I suspect that not much will be new to specialists, but it is nice to have so much Proust scholarship packaged in one place. Much of it was new to me, who have spent 25 years reading this novel. I especially enjoyed the material on how Saint-Simon's memoirs and Balzac's novels influenced the character of the Baron de Charlus. I had not known how much the character of the narrator was influenced by Racine. Much of the book consists of footnotes with French texts. Because of these footnotes, I read bits of Racine for the first time, and liked them. These essays are well-written. The book is short--you can read it in an afternoon. I read it twice and enjoyed it both times. Highly recommended.

Like other reviewers, I didn't really know what to expect, but unlike other reviewers I was pleasantly surprised. Too often, books about Proust are really about the authors of those books (Proust Can Change Your Life), or are so insubstantial as to be not worth the price of the postage (Proust's Overcoat). But this is a valuable contribution to understanding and appreciating Proust's novel by showing how Proust's personal reading influenced the composition, the characters and the themes of his novel. In the process, it is also an entertaining essay on "good" and "bad" readers. The author obviously did much research and reading to put the book together, but it isn't written in scholarly jargon.
