By close reader The subject is very interesting, but the author writes in that inflated, pretentious academic "style" that's so prevalent among critics of the arts these days. It's as if he goes out of his way to be obtuse, verbose and verbally ostentatious so that he will be the center of attention rather than his subject. Too bad.
