Excerpt from Rough and Tumble Engineering: A Book of Instructions for Operators of Farm and Traction EnginesIn placing this book before the public the author wishes it understood that it is not his intention to produce a scientific work on engineering. Such a book would be valuable only to engineers of large stationary engines. In a nice engine room nice theories and scientific calculations arc practical. This book is intended for engineers of farm and traction engines, "rough and tumble engineers," who have everything in their favor today, and tomorrow are in mud holes, who with the same engine do eight horse work one clay and sixteen horse work the next day. Reader, the author has had all these experiences and you will have them, but don't get discouraged. You can get through them to your entire satisfaction.Don't conclude that all you need to do is to read this book. It will not make an engineer of you. But read it carefully, use good judgment and common sense, do as it tells you. and my word for it. in one month, you, for all practical purposes, will be a better engineer than four-fifths of the so-called engineers today, who think what they don't know would not Dalce much of a book.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Rough and Tumble Engineering By D. Hull The author discusses how to OPERATE a steam engine. He does NOT discuss how to design one, nor how to build one. The book appears to have been written circa 1910.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A quick summary By Patti No one had left a review, so I thought I would quickly say a few words.I only read the preface and introduction. The book is about engineering in the sense of trains; it was wrote for the common-man, as a sort of introduction/summary of the topic.Hopefully, that will give a bit of color to what is to be expected, should you download it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great resource on operation of a steam traction engine By Frank Dewitt Great resourceIf you would like to know how to operate one of these magnificent machines or what it was like to operate them for a living this is a wonderful book.It is also a look into how people worked and thought 100 years ago. It is not a how to build one or buy one.
